I am looking for any information on the Samuel H. Powell/Powel who married Angenett/Jennetta (Nettie) Hancock/Handcock on 1 July 1874 in Green Co. KY. Samuel was b. abt. 1851 in KY and Nettie was b. abt. 1854 KY.
It is Nettie that is said to have been full Blackfoot Indian. I do not yet have her parents names.
This union produced several children;4 that I know of, one being my Great Grandmother Ethel Powell b.~1886, her brothers were Oliver, Edward and Everet! All born in Green Co. KY.
It was Ethel that later relocated to Georgia and started her family after marriage.
I have been uncertain that our family had ties to the Plains Blackfoot Indians as I can never place any of them west of KY during this time period.
My Grandmother Juanita stressed BlackFOOT, not Blackfeet whick also leads me to think not MT or Canada. We do have relatives that came down from Canada but that is a different family branch all together.
Can anyone be of assistance with leads? Thanks you, 2PI
August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22841On the 1900 Green Co., Ky Census, Gresham Twp, p.13A, an “Ethe” (Ethel?) Powell, 15, is listed as the Granddaughter of Oliver Hancock, b. 1818 Ky, 81 yrs old.
On the next page is Tuncil Hancock, 39, (a son of the Oliver above), and in Tuncil’s household is Oliver Powell, “Nephew”, 22.
Samuel Powell, 52, is living in the household of, and listed as the “Father” of Ed Powell, 26.
On the 1880 Green Co., Ky Census, Groves Twp, 16 June, p.20D, Household 2:
POWELL, Sam’l, Farmer, White, male, 29, b. Ky as were both parents.
………., Nettie, wife, White, female, 26, b. Ky, Ky, Ky.
………., Edward, son, 6, Ky.
………., Everet, son, 4, Ky.
………., Oliver, son, 2, Ky.
4 houses further:
HANCOCK, Oliver; farmer, W, m, 65, b. Ky, father b. Canada; mother b.Va.
…………, Richard; 28, son, Ky.
…………, John, 24, son, Ky.
…………, Simon, 22, son, Ky.
…………, Tuncil, 20, son, Ky.
So, Tuncil is the son of Oliver Hancock and Oliver Powell, son of Samuel and Nettie Powell, is Tuncil’s nephew, and Ethel Powell is Oliver Hancock’s granddaughter, then Oliver Hancock is Nettie’s father.
In 1870, Oliver Hancock and family lived in Adair Co., Ky, the next county southeast of Green Co., where Oliver’s wife is listed as Amanda M., b.abt. 1818, Ky, and next door to them is:
HANCOCK, William, 88, male, white, farmer, b. Va.
…………, Elizabeth, 58, female, white, Ky. (poss. his 2nd or 3rd wife)
…………, William J. W., 29, Ky.
A family tree for this William does not show a son “Oliver” but this is also a surname and may in fact have been his middle name but this is not proven – Oliver could be a nephew or cousin, but this is the line you need to research:
Tree:
William Hancock, b. 1 Jun 1782 Bedford Co., Va; d. 14 Apr 1878 Adair Co., Ky marr’d 1) on 10 Mar 1809 Adair Co., Ky, Ailsey (Elsy/Elsie) SETTLES, b. ? , d. 19 Sep 1855 Adair Co., Ky.
marr’d 2nd ?? ) Mary _?_ on 13 Apr 1859 Adair Co., Ky.
William’s parents:
William Hancock, b. 20 Oct 1749 Chesterfield Co., Va; d. 22 Feb 1837 Adair Co., Ky; m’d 11 Feb 1771 Chesterfield Co., Va, Ann HILL, b.abt. 1745 Chesterfield Co., Va, d. abt. 1812 Adair Co., Ky.
This goes back farther, but see if you can pin down Oliver Hancock’s father first.

August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22843Many thanks Bill, this is so much more information then I had! It certainly gives me a much better start as to where to look and who to look for. I will start looking for Oliver’s father. Wow…I still can’t believe how good you are at pulling this stuff up. I thank you and my cousins thank you! Warm regards, 2PI
August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22845Bill,
By any chance does the Tree for William Hancock a son by the name of Oliver Hazard Hancock b. bet. 1815-1818 this would could be the Oliver that is Nettie father. I located him on the LDS with a wife being Amanda Cundiff.
I hope this is it! More children were listed on the LSD site for Oliver Hazard Hancock..a son William and a few others.
However, the only place where Ethel is cited is on the census records. Her middle name started with an A…is all I know..
I will be look further at this. Many Olivers and William Hancocks listed. Plus the information on LDS is only as good as the persons research that put it on the site. Thank you, 2PI
August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22853William Hancock, b.1782 Va, is listed with the following children:
Burl, b. 1810 (all dates were specific)
Austin, 1811
George, 1813
Nancy, 1815 – twin
Mary, 1815 – twin
Lucy, 1817
Malinda, 1819
William, 1821
John, 1824.
I checked William’s brothers for sons name Oliver or Oliver Hazard with no success, altho a couple had not been traced. William’s brothers were:
Simon, b. 1774 Chesterfield Co., Va.
John, b. 1776,………”….. (not traced)
James, b. 1780 Bedford Co., Va (not traced)
Samuel, b. 1786…”…. (not traced but listed as died in 1850 Texas)
Hiram, b. 1791…..”….

August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22854Hi Bill,
What I found over at the LDS site from material that was listed by an Arvil Dale Hancock is that Oliver Hazard Hancock is the son of the William Hancock b. 20 Oct. 1749 Chesterfield, VA D. 22 Fed. 1837 Adair KY married first to Ann Hill on 11 Feb 1771 Chesterfield Co., VA she d. abt. 1812.
He, William married (2) a Mary (Fisher) Emerson abt. 1814 in Adair KY and produced three children: Nancy Hancock, John Perry Hancock, and Oliver Hazard Hancocck that was born 1818. It was this Oliver that married Amanda Cundiff.
So that would make him related to William Hancock b. 1782 Half brother(?)
I also found several wives for this William.
m. 1809 (1) Alsey (various spellings) Settles b. 1786
m. 1858 (2) Elizabeth Watson (no children listed)
m. 1859 (3) Mary (?)
Does this make more sense? As several of these William marriages produce many children.
Thank you for your help and time. 2PI
Bill, I think I have something figured out. I want to wrtie it up and then post it for you and everyone to see.
My Nettie Hancock is also listed as Angentt or Jennetta Hancock on two different sources plus Nettie on the census. I am wondering outload here if Angenett is really Ann Jennetta Hancock and a nick name for Ann is Nancy if I recall correctly from other works. Oliver and Amanda had three children…one being Nancy. This is a long shot I know. I will look into it. Thank you. Feedback and assistance appreciated and welcome! 2PI

August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22869THANK YOU! Bill, Gosh, this is much information to soak into right now.
I will post again later this evening! It is no wonder that Ethel’s mother name was not coming up right. 🙂 2PI
August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #22876Another reseacher has informed me that she has pulled up the marriage bond between Samuel Powell and Nettie Hancock. the information I pulled off the LDS site was one year off. I will share this information that Karen Jorgenson sent me from Green Co. KY: (the census we have! but with Nettie’s first name spelled differently.) school record/census and marriage bond included!
Here is Samuel Powell and wife Janette “Nettie” Hancock:

August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #23043This is outline of Cabell Family that I have so far. I do have a few details to fill in yet. The Powhatan Indian lineage comes in through Elizabeth Burkes Family. I will post that information too. As it goes back directly to Chief Powhatan. I think my Samuel Jordan Cabell is the son of Samuel Jordan Cabell/grandson of Col. John. Cabell. Who was the son William Cabell (1699-1774). As this William’s son Samuel died 1818 in VA, so he could not have gone to KY! I am still trying to put it all together. 2PI

Sarah Downing Ayres
b. abt. 1759
d. _?_ , Hardin Co., Ky
(dau of Thomas Downing, 1744-1799. and Sarah Ann Rogers, 1744-1785)
a John Cundiff is on the 8/30/1800 Nelson Co., Ky Tax List.
Nelson Co is next door to Hardin and Bullitt Co’s.
This John’s parents are said to be Richard Cundiff and Mary Brown but there is some ‘research confusion’ as to whether Mary was John’s mother or grandmother so it looks like more than just the normal amount of ‘caution’ is required about John’s parents.

August 30, 2006 at 3:22 pm #23056Thank you, Bill. I will proceed with caution. I like to get it right! I have tried contacting another research in Adair Co. that is conducting search on same family to compare. However the email addy is dead.
I see where this family also traces back to VA. & MD. Many thanks! I have been going over and over the research I have found for Opechanacanough of the Powhatan /Cayuga tribe and must assume along with Linda that the Cayuga is an error in other research skills.
I did find where the Powhatan tribal chiefdom was passed on through the maternal side and not the paternal side as one would expect. Very interesting, if true! I have also found where some listed Chief Powhatan’s second wife as Cherokee…has to be another mistake.

Bill, this looks like Sarah Downing Ayres was married before she married John Henry Cundiff, to John Ayres Sr maybe. I have his birth at 01 Jun 1725/ Prince Georges Co., MD married to a Hannah unknown (?) maybe Sarah. She carries the Downing name and the Ayres name before her marriage to John Henry Cundiff.
I think maybe this Thomas Downing is her brother and Sarah Rogers her sister in law, perhaps. Just because of ages listed and the naming pattren has me wondering. I will look deeper. Thanks, for this information.
