Can anyone help me? I’m trying to find information on the surnames Griffin, Brewer, Harris & Cone.
My GG Grandmother’s father was said to be full blood native american. This information has been passed down through many branches of our family. It was told that he was Cherokee, but i’m skeptical, because of the area in NC that he came from & from the info that i’ve read online. I’ve read that Griffin, Brewer & Harris were Saponi surnames. His name was King Griffin & he was born abt 1812/13 in Martin County NC. The area that he was from is/was called “The Islands”, & this area is on the Roanoke River just south of Bertie Co. NC not far from the Indian Woods area or where the Tucarora lived. Also, King at age 38 is listed in the 1850 census of Martin Co. NC house # 298 with wife Anna 40 & 3 children Elizabeth 8, Simon 4 & Mary 2. Mary is my line from him. There was a boy named Charles Cone 13 living with his family that was listed as Mulatto. Also in the same census next door to him House # 297 was an Edward 70 & Lydia Griffin 60 we feel that these were his parents because of their age & being close to his residence. There was a Polly Griffin 60 at the home too. and they had 2 people living with their family by the names of Dolly & Elvin Brewer. And at house # 299 lived a Reuben Griffin 39, William Griffin 28, Adline 4, & John 2. These may have been King’s brothers. They were all listed as Mulatto. King’s daughter Mary Griffin my GG Grandmother married George M. Harris of the same area. I’ve searched everywhere possible for more information on King Griffin, but i always seem to reach a dead end. I’ve recently met a distant cousin online through query boards that is doing the same research on King & the stories about him that was told to me, was told to her through different generations of our family. So there has to be something to it all. If my ancestor was Saponi or of any other tribe I would love to know more about who he was & where his people came from. Any input would be greatfully appreciated! Thanks, Sage

The King may be as far as anybody can get, and you’re left to just go with your own gut on it. It can be very illuminating to research as much as you can about the history of those places, that can help take the place of lost family lore as far as filling in your mind’s eye on who your folks were.
Good hunting.
