Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I have been trying to research my family history for almost 2 years now, seem to only hit block walls. I hope someone out there will be able to shine some light on my family.
Looking for Martha Guy, b. TN abt. 1849 (suppose to be Native American), d. 1910 or 1911. NOt sure, but I think Guy is her maiden name and may not have married but had a daughter by the name of Ellen Eveline Guy, b. NC abt. 1874. And in one of the census reports Martha was listed at Head and Ellen was Daughter and Elizabeth Guy was listed as Other. I think Elizabeth and Ellen were cousins. Betty as she was sometime called was b. NC5/29/1872, d. 1/15/1950.
I believe Betty Guy’s father was Jim Guy, and mother was Brenda (Webb) Guy. Brenda ran off and left family when Betty was quite young.
Also looking for John McCoy Guy, b. 1892, d. 1988, his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Guy (same Elizabeth Guy), father unknown
There was a George Buchanan Guy, b. 1879, that married Mary Lou Ketron (Catron) b. 1886.
Ellen Eveline Guy later married John Finley Pilkinton, name later changed to Pilkin.
I’m also trying to find proof of the Indian heritage of Martha, Ellen and Betty Guy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Trish
Welcome Trish. Guy is a frequent name to come up around here. I’d say run a search on it, but it will choke on a three letter word. (I wonder if there’s a way we can get around that.) It is, I believe, one of only half a dozen names that have been documented to tribal Saponi, so I would encourage you to keep at it. I’ll copy this thread to the “Share Genealogy” section so it will get more notice from the genealogists hanging about.
