I need help tracing down my heritage on my grandmothers side.
My Great Grandmother-Jessie E Jones (married Leeper) had a father who they say was pure blood Indian. Grandmother use to say it was Blackfoot. My anunt said it was a tribe around the Paineville Area at that time. We lived in Lake County (Painesville) Ohio. Northeast of Cleveland.
Jessie E Jones – born July 14 1891
She was a basket weaver in Lake County Ohio
Harrison Basket Factory
Jessie also ran a gas station in Newton Falls around 1950’s
I think Jessie had a sister named Mamie Jones (married Carson)
I think Jessie also had a brother Roy Jones
Jessie had a daughter Serena E Leeper
Mamie I don’t think had children
Roy I think had two children – Virgil Jones and a daughter
I remember some of these from childhood but can’t find any one left to get information from.
Does anyone know where I can get more information on my great great great grandfather – Looking for the Indian Heritage ?
Sure appreciate the help. Thank you for your time.
May 4, 2006 at 7:55 pm #21089From census records:
1930 Lake Co., Ohio census; ED20 Painesville (city), Ward 2; 25, 26 April; Sheet 23B; family # 633:
LEEPER, Carl; Head; m, W, 43; m’d @ 25; Oh, US, US.
……….., JESSIE; Wife; f, W, 38; m’d @ 18; Oh, Pa, WV.
PIKE, Clifford; son-in-law; m, W, 22; m’d @ 22; Oh, Oh, Oh.
……., SERENA; dau; f, W, 19; m’d @ 19; Oh, Oh, Oh.
To help explain some of the abbreviations used:
Relationship is to the “Head” of the household.
Carl is listed as “Head” of household but “None” for occupation, male, white, 1st married at 25 yrs old and born in Ohio. His father b. “US” and mother b. “US” would seem to indicate that whoever gave the census taker this info did not know where Carl’s parents were born, exactly.
Jessie’s occupation is Basketmaker in a Basket factory. She is Carl’s wife, female, white, 38, 1st married at 18 and born in Ohio. Her father was born Pa (Pennsylvania) and her mother was born in WV (West Virginia).

1920 Lake Co., Ohio census; ED85 Painesville, Jackson Road; 19 Feb; Sheet 24B; family # 527:
LEEPER, Carl; Farmer; m, W, 35; Oh, Oh, Oh.
……….., JESSIE; wife; f, W, 28; Oh, Pa, WV.
……….., SERENA; dau; f, W, 9; Oh, Oh, Oh.
……………………………
1910 Hancock Co., Ohio census; ED 80 Marion Twp; family # 255 (digital image cut off the top of this page)
LEEPER, Carl; Farmer; m, W, 26; marr’d 1x; Oh, Oh, Oh.
…………, JESSIE; wife; f, W, 18, marr’d 1x; Oh, Oh, Oh.
1910 Lake Co., Ohio census; ED82 Painesville (city), Ward 2; 24 April; Sheet 8(?) B; family 256:
JONES, James M; laborer; m, W, 49, m’d 1x; Pa, Oh, Oh.
………., Rena E; wife; f, W, 42; m’d 1x; Oh, Oh, Oh.
………., Leroy E; son; m, W, 16, Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., Jennie H; dau; f, W, 13, Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., Georganna; dau; f, W, 11; Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., Mary; dau; f, W, 5; Oh, Oh, Oh.
SEED (?), Sarah M; Mother; f, W, 63; Oh, Oh, Oh.
(SEED may be DEED – hard to make out – but I didn’t find her earlier under either name. Sarah is listed as having had 2 children and both are living)
Rena has had 9 children with 6 still living.
……………………………..
1900 Lake Co., Oh census; ED61 Madison Twp Pct 3; 23 June; Sheet 10B; family # 219:
JONES, James M; farmer; W, m, Dec 1863; 36; m’d 13; Pa, Pa, Pa.
………., Rena E; wife; W, f, Feb 1868; 32; m’d 13; Oh, WV, Oh
………., Daisy E; dau; W, f, Oct 1888; 11; Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., JESSIE E; dau; W, f, July 1891; 8; Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., Leroy; son; Apr 1894, 6; Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., Jennie; dau; Apr 1896, 4; Oh, Pa, Oh.
………., Georgia; dau; Jun 1898, 1; Oh, Pa, Oh.
James and Rena have been married 13 yrs ( “m’d 13” ) .
I did not locate Carl Leeper’s parents.
Sarah M. SEED (?) may be Rena’s mother and not James’s or she was remarried and widowed before the 1910 census date.
“Rena” sounds like a forshortening of “Serena”.
…..
