Hi Family,
I just received another name from a cousin of mine on my paternal Grandmother’s side. She said the name of her grandmother was Mary Moose or perhaps Muse and rumored to be Cherokee or of another nation. Nanni’s family came out of Lancaster Co., South Carolina.
I haven’t been able to find much information (you can also read this as my youngest is on his feet now and I’m keeping him out of trouble, so not a lot of free time to be online). Anyone familiar with this surname? Thanks! 🙂

The police chief of Montgomery County, MD when we had that DC area sniper, a couple of years ago, was named Moose.
There was a black family going by the name Muse in central Kentucky, about 35 years ago — a family member told me at the time that the name was originally Mieux (French, maybe Cajun, anyway from farther south than KY).
I don’t know that either of these had any SC connections, but I also don’t know that they didn’t.
My maternal grandfathers family is from Cane Creek, Lancaster, South Carolina. I can try to ask them if they know of the family there.
Sounds as if Shirley has some good info. You know that there are a lot of family members named Mouse. Is it possible that this may be the name?

Shirley, I’m sure you know exactly what I mean…and here I am thinking I can squeeze in one more–please smack some sense into me! 😮 Thank you so much for digging those up for me. I think the last Mary, born in 1794, would fit the timeline best. Any mention of a spouse or children with her?

Thank you for your input! It is a strange surname…I am not sure of any connection with Kentucky, but as you said, that doesn’t rule it out. I can ask Heloise and see if she might know.

What is your family’s name from Lancaster? My grandmother was from there. Had the last name of Robinson. Her mother had the last name of Hale maybe Hail, Hales, or even Haley.

Is “Mouse” pronounced like the small rodent or the dessert? I’m not sure of the spelling but my Mom did tell me that Heloise said Moose. I could have morphed from Mouse to Moose. I just say on a PBS show last night about a family that couldn’t find where an ancestor was buried because someone misspelled his name on the tombstone–it was Hail instead of Hall!
