🙂 I’m looking for info on the name “Best” for years I have heard stories about this family member named “Philip Best” who was suppose to be blackfoot. The only area I know of him living in is Blueridge VA. I told my grandmother that the name best from my research (which sucked) seems to be Irish. Well Grandma got really mad saying ” I know good and well what I am, thank you.” 😮 I feel like I’ve hit a dead end and the genealogy web sites haven’t matched up his name. Anyone out there heard of the name Best asosiated with blackfoot ancestery? Any info would help.
Thanks,

Bill
July 20, 2007 at 8:42 pm #27606Thanks for asking about the time frame. I guess me not putting down dates for Phillip (Philip?) Best shows my novice. Anyway my Grandma thinks he was in his 30’s in 1903 when one of his kids were born. In the late 1930’s a traggic accident happened that caused my great grandmother to be unable to care for her children and they were sent to foster homes. My grandmother begged to go live with her beloved Grandpa and Grandma in Virginia, but was told he’s unfit for two reasons one your grandparents are old and have little to live off of and two your grandpa is native (making him unfit I guess in their eyes) Soon after she was told they died. She never saw her grandparents again. Grandma swears he would’ve moved heaven and earth to take in his grandkids if he knew (she thinks he thought that there father was taking care of them)The best she can figure is that she was told they were dead around 1940. Since the family was spit up (some siblings never being found after that) it’s hard to get grandma to speak about anything but the good times.
Thanks, yvonne
July 20, 2007 at 8:42 pm #27625Do you know which state your Grandmother lived in when her parents died?
July 20, 2007 at 8:42 pm #28119Quite frankly I dont feel comfortabe sharing info on line. you never explaned why you need this info either. i have provided info on phillip best there is no need to know my grandmothers place of residency to connect phillip to being blackfoot. so if you have never heard the name phillip best in connection to being blackfoot then there is no need to further converse on the subject. I hope I have not misunderstood you.
thanks
July 20, 2007 at 8:42 pm #28121Bill was asking so he could do a look up for you. It’s the only way to find which Bests to look at.
There is no ‘roll’ of Virginia Blackfoot, scarcely any historical mention of them, only our family stories. By putting our information together we’ve seen many coincidences of names and places, confirming that this wasn’t something random, and that it started way, way back in colonial times.
If you’re not comfortable posting online, that’s perfectly understandable. Have you tried using the search feature at the top, right hand corner to search on your names? There’s also an article we have at http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm that might be helpful.
July 20, 2007 at 8:42 pm #28174😮 I will start by saying I’M SORRY. I guess I got freaked out. I hope you will still reply. My Grandmother grew up in West Virginia. They lived in Beckley, Mt. Hope, Prosperity, and Oak Hill. She was sent in foster care and orphanages around 1937 or 1938. Her father didn’t die the welfare said he was unable to take care of the children on his own (I believe it was due more to a drinking problem that developed after the accident with his wife) My great grandma lived untill 1980, but she was more like a child than an adult. She went and lived with her sister in virginia. I’m not certain were. It wasn’t till the 60’s that the family found their mother and aunt. My Grandmas Grandpa (Phillip Best) was suppose to live In a town called Blueridge in Virginia and at some point lived in Roanoke were he meet and married his wife (no one seems to remember her name which I can understand since all the kids were under 10) My grandmas mother was born in 1903. Where at? all I know is Virginia. My Grandma thinks her grandpa (phillip) was about 30 at the time. She was told that her grandparents were dead in the late 1930’s or early 1940’s, but in the 60’s my great aunt hired an investigator to find some of their siblings. The info Grandma says she remembers was collected from locals of blueridge who remember Phillip living till the early 1960’s and that he was in his 90’s when he died. Unfortunatly the money for the investigator ran out and we never located a grave to be certain of the year he died. But the info the investigator found on my grandmas youngest sister was shocking. She was with her mother when she was shot. they found her covered in her mothers blood. she was only 3 or 4. I guess the shock made her stop talking and the state of West Virginia labeled her as mentally retarded. no one wanted her and somehow she ended up in an insane hospital. Her medical records list her as hemmoraging to death (or something meaning that) She was undergoing some sort of operatation. We have wondered if they were sterilizing her or if she got pregnant and they perfromed and abortion on her, but to be fare P.C.O.S runs in the family. How does a teenager bleed to death and it wasn’t listed as far as we know as a suicide. I hope all this is enough, it’s about all I know.
Once again I’m sorry! Oh yeah before I forget I’ve looked up Best on the search and found nothing.
Thanks, Yvonne:D

Yvonne,
What a very tragic find; I am sorry. Bill is not on Saponitown anymore, but there are many here gifted in research, who may be able to help…myself not included, but I can check Ancestry and see what turns up. Welcome to the forum, hope you are able to find what you are looking for.
