Im from Gastonia, NC originally and my dad’s and mom’s families are from Upstate SC. There are reports of Blackhawk Cherokee and Blackfoot on both sides of the family. My dad’s maternal line is from Virginia and so is my moms. Some of the surnames Im interested in are Johnson, Sims, Clark, and Robinson. Many of my ancestors were listed as mulattoes as were their spouses and children but Ive always heard we have Indian blood and its more than apparent. I’d love the help in research and Im also a linguist with interest in Souian languages and have done some work with Catawba. I also weave baskets in the Southeastern style.

You can use the search function on the toolbar for your family names, as well as post what info you have on genealogy and someone may be able to help.

February 14, 2008 at 8:29 pm #35336Hi Justin,
My Native American g-g-g grandmother was named Sarah Ann Brown, and she was married to Hugh Robinson from Rowan Co. (Salisbury) NC until his death in 1844. She then married my g-g-g grandfather, John A. Whitman. Anyway, the Whitmans and Robinsons were related and we are supposedly descended from Blackhawk Cherokees, whatever that means (we are really most likely Saponi). My great grandfather was orphaned and even went to live with a Robinson, who was his father’s half-brother and very much Native American.
Do you have a Hugh Robinson or a James Franklin Robinson in your family tree? If so, we are kin. If not, there are some Robinsons from southern VA listed on the Cherokee tribal rolls. You could be related to them.
