This explains why we find our ancestors listed as mulattos on most census.
“The Virginia legislature passed a Race Law in 1823, which declared that any child of an Indian, and any descendant of a Negro, up to the great-grandchild, would be counted as a mulatto. This designation was used for all non-whites in Virginia until after the Civil War.”

I also remember coming across some information a long time ago, stating that slave children’s freedom depended on and followed the steps of the mother. So if the mother was a slave……no matter whether the child’s father was Caucasian or Indian, the mulatto child stayed in slavery. This way, the Master would always produce more slaves and farmhands (or house servants), without having to buy more off the market.:(
The only way out of this predicament, would be if the mother (or fpc relative) purchased her freedom, then her children would become free also.

Oh Barb! Isn’t she a doll-baby? How I wish she were mine!:) She’s my neice (Terranie Marie Bennett), child of my youngest sister, who lives in Dayton OH. Tay-Tay just turned a year old in January. I pray that some day I’ll be able to have a sweet little girl like her. But with my health issues and shortage of available single men 😎 time is getting short! But of course I always have the option to adopt….though there’s nothing like having your own child. At least I still have 3 nephews and 2 other neices to love on!
