Isham Collins
I am new to this site, and fairly new to genealogy research in general, so please forgive any failure to observe protocol or any idiocies.
I am trying to make sense of the Collins! No easy task! All those Ishams, Armintas, Edwards, etc. Mary, b. 1850, daughter of Isham and Sarah is my ggrandmother.
Some questions: Does anyone know ancestors of this Isham (the one who is in McDowell Co WV in 1860 and went to Meeker Co MN?) I believe he was born c1824. Does anyone know where?
I have seen that it is believed his wife Sarah’s name was Roberts. What is the basis for this theory?
Also, why is it thought that Isham had children with a Dicey Roberts?
For what it may be worth, Mary’s death certificate lists her mother’s name as Klein. (This info came from her eldest son at her death in 1940.) Since there are so many Clines in McDowell Co VA, I thought that maybe this info might be correct, just misspelled.
I would greatly appreciate any insights/corrections/info anyone may have.
Thanks, Margaret
November 15, 2005 at 1:12 pm #17536I didn’t find anything on Isham’s wife Sarah “Sally”.
On the 1860 McDowell Co., (W) Va census, Isham’s next door neighbor is John Collins, b.abt. 1820 Ky, who m’d Eliza Justice abt. 1839 in Pike Co., Ky.
On that 1860 census, both John and Isham are listed as b. Ky.
On the 1850 Tazewell Co., Va census, John is listed as b. Ky and Isham as b. Va, but on all subsequent census records, Isham is listed as born in Ky. Both were probably born in Floyd/Pike Co., Ky. Pike was created from Floyd County in 1822.
Both Isham’s and John’s ages are probably a ‘little off’ on this 1860 census.
Both Isham and John Collins as well as a Nancy, b.abt. 1833, are claimed to be the children of Edward J. Collins, b.1801 Russell Co., Va., d. 1879, maybe in Mingo Co., WVa., and his first wife Mary (Polly) Bryant (b. unkn), m’d 27 July 1820, in Floyd Co., Ky.
This is somewhat supported by the fact that a Nancy, b.abt.1833, lived in Edward J. Collins’s household in 1850 Tazewell Co., Va, per that census, and that both John and Isham lived in Tazewell Co, too; John and his family lived 8 houses away from Edward. Isham some distance away.
I’d caution you about accepting this without checking it out thoroughly because Edward and Anna also had a son named John, b.abt. 1842, but I think it’s close enough to use as a roadmap.
This Edward J. Collins m’d 2nd, Anna Justice on 26 Jun 1834 in Pike Co., Ky, so I assume that Mary “Polly” had died before that time. I neglected to check the 1830 census for Edward to determine where Isham may have been born but I’ll do that and post it.
(Nancy Collins, b.1833, m’d Jonathan Hall on 30 Oct 1854 in Tazewell Co., Va)
Altho there are several lines claiming Edward J. Collins, the most I could confirm is that he is ‘probably’ the son of Isaac Collins, b.abt. 1760 NC, d. 1831 Russell Co., Va., who m’d 1st, abt. 1800 (unconfirmed) Nancy Blackburn, b.abt. 1780; and m’d 2nd, abt. 1820 (also unconfirmed) Elizabeth Morgan, b.abt. 1790.
I think this line connects to most of the other Collins on this Forum.
Isham Collins and family are on the 1870 Meeker Co., Mn Census; New Virginia Tpw; pg. 6, Family 42, with an additional child, Isham, b.abt. 1861 Va.
The Litchfield Minn. Land Office records show that Isham Collins purchased 80 acres on March 2, 1873.
In 1880 Meeker Co, Mn, ED58 Collinwood Twp, Isham and Sarah lived with their son Edward W. (E.W. on that census), a School Teacher

November 15, 2005 at 1:12 pm #17545Dear Bill,
Many thanks for your efforts and the time spent laying the info out so clearly! You gave me several nuggets I didn’t have.
Sarah does seem to be an enigma!
Thanks again! Margaret
November 15, 2005 at 1:12 pm #17549On the 1850 Tazewell Co., Va census, Isham and Sarah’s son John is listed as “Jno. R.”, which could be for “Roberts”, or some other name:)
The also had had a 6 month old baby girl “Not Named”, which is undoubtedly Mary.
