Here is some data abstracted from Fed. Census records. Specific birthdates are from those families’s researchers but concide well with census data so they may be ‘good’.
1900 Macon Co., NC Census; ED68 Highlands Twp; 29 June; Sheet 9B; Household 159:
ROGERS, James M.; farmer, W, m, Sep 1860, 39, marr’d 18 yrs; NC, NC, NC.
………, Sarah E.; wife, W, f, Oct 1864, 35, 7 children, 7 living; Tn, Tn, Tn.
………, Gertrude; dau, Jun 1883, 16, NC.
………, Edward; son, July 1885, 14, NC.
………, Nora L.; dau, Nov 1886, 13, NC.
………, Harrison; son, Mar 1891, 9, NC.
………, Bertie B.; son, Feb 1893, 7, NC.
………, Edith O.; dau, Mar 1895, 5, NC.
………, Dewey; son, Apr 1898, 2, NC.
…………………………………………………
1880 Macon Co., NC Census; ED116 Sugar Fork Twp; 18 June; p.6; Household 46:
ROGERS, Thos. N.; W, m, 41, farmer; NC, NC, NC.
………., Elizabeth; W, f, 39, wife; NC, Tn, NC.
………., Sarah J.; 21, dau, NC.
………., JAMES M.; 19, son, NC (James Marion Rogers)
………., Cora M.; 10, dau, NC.
………., Mary J.; 8, dau, NC.
………., Lydia B.; 7, dau, NC.
………., William J.; 6, son, NC.
………., Isaac B.; 3, son, NC.
………., Annah; 1 month, dau, NC.
ROGERS, David; W, m, 89, Father, NC, NC, NC.
Thomas Newton Rogers m’d 1st) on 15 June 1858 in Macon County, Edith E. HOLLAND, b. 25 Sep 1836 Macon Co., NC, d. 21 Apr 1865, and she is the mother of James M. Rogers. Thomas m’d 2nd) on 12 Jul 1866 Macon Co., Margaret Elizabeth KEENER, b. 12 Dec 1839 Macon Co., d. 24 Sep 1931 Macon Co., NC, who is the Elizabeth, 39, in the above census data.
Thomas Newton Rogers’s parents:
David Rogers, b. 27 Aug 1790 (Pa or NC?), d. 28 Deb 1882 Macon Co., NC; m’d 26 Sep 1815 Washington Co., Tenn, Martha Young, b. 27 Jul 1792 Pendleton Dist., SC, d. 10 Nov 1873 Macon Co., NC.
David’s parents, Hugh Rogers, b.abt. 1761 Philadelphia, Pa, d. 29 Oct 1848 Haywood Co., NC; m’d 28 Oct 1789 Washington Co., Tenn, Nancy THORNTON, b. abt. 1767 Mecklenburg Co., NC, d. around 1848 Haywood Co., NC. Nancy appears to belong to the Thorntons of Westmoreland Co., Va, related to the Washington (as in the 1st President), Taliaferro, Willis & Lewis families. That Thornton line is possibly descended from Pocahontas so you might research that. Nancy Thornton’s parents are John Thornton and Jane Washington.
1880 Jackson Co., NC; ED111 Hamburg Twp; 8 June; p.8; Household 65:
JENNINGS, James J.; W, m, 55, Farmer, NC, NC, NC.
…………., Sarah; W, f, 38, Wife, NC, NC, NC.
…………., Charley; 18, son, NC.
…………., SARAH; 15, dau, NC. (Sarah Elizabeth “Betty” Jennings)
…………., Mary; 13, dau, NC.
…………., Lenada; 11, dau, NC.
…………., Marthy; 8, dau, NC.
…………., Grant; 5, son, NC.
…………., Theodocia; 3, dau, NC.
…………., Dink; 11 months, son, NC.
In 1870, this Jennings family was living in Sugar Fork Twp, Macon Co., NC, 6 houses away from the Thos. N. Rogers family.
James m’d 1st) 24 Jan 1842 Macon Co., NC, Mary “Polly” L. CAGLER (4 children with her), b. 30 Mar 1822 Haywood Co., NC, d. 31 Jul 1847 Macon Co., NC.
James m’d 2nd) 25 Aug 1849 Macon Co., NC, Lourenda/Lucinda P. EVIT (4 children with her, including James M. ?), b. 9 Oct 1841, d. before 14 Jun 1861 when James m’d 3rd) Sarah HENDERSON, b. 9 Oct 1841 Laurens District, SC, (12 children with her).
The Macon Co., NC Marriage record index also lists a James J. Jennings m’d 25 Sep 1847, Sarah BROOKS, so it’s a toss-up as to whether James M.’s mother was Lucinda Evit or Sarah Brooks, the records I found don’t clear it up.

May 30, 2007 at 1:39 pm #35320Hi
Bill Childs, I’m looking for info on my Thornton’s from Granville Co, North Carolina. My Grandmother Georgianna Thornton, was regarded as black Indian, and i understand she was probably mixed. Can you help me, and see if your able to find anything on her and her family. Their name’s are listed below. Please excuse me if i posted this message twice.
William, or Wilton Thornton b abt 1874 lived in Walnut Grove, Granville, North Carolina married Luella????? maybe Thorp,or Tharpe
Children were Mulatto:
Essie Thornton
Ethel Thornton
Georgianna Thornton
Robert L Thornton
Willie Thornton
Myteral Thornton
Cleaverland Thornton
Govenor thornton
Horace Thornton
St louis Thornton
Victora Thornton b abt 1853 might be William’s Mother because, She’s older, and for some reason listed as his daughter that might have been an error.
May 30, 2007 at 1:39 pm #35360John, I’m descended from the Rogers family….I’m descended from Hugh Rogers & Nancy Thornton Rogers through their son Nicholas Powers Rogers who married Matilda Noland.
I’m currently researching the family. I’m interested in hearing more about the Thornton line of descent from Pocahontas.
