I wanted to post my family’s surnames on my father’s side and see if anyone knows about them. I know my father’s family are First Nations people, but their records are either distorted or virtually non-existant. Old stories tell me that some of them are Sioux/Lakota, but since they come from VA/WV/TN I’m not sure if they really meant they were from Siouan language stock. I have another theory (maybe it’s a stretch): they were sent to either Carlisle or Hampton to the “Indian schools” and possibly stayed in the area. At any rate I’m stumped and looking for any info I can find. Here are some names:
grandfather: Frank Shepherd wife: Katie Barker
gr. grandfather: Henry Shepherd wife: Lavenia (unknown maiden name)
Frank had a brother named Harvey (older)
Frank and Katie had six sons: Merle, Harold, Worney, Ballard, Major, Ralph
Katie’s father was Miles Barker
I know that’s not much to go on, but it’s all I have. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. They were all from the Montgomery County, VA area. Unsure when they came or if they were all born there.
January 15, 2007 at 4:41 pm #24432Hi Tim, Welcome.
They lived in Montgomery Co and earlier Augusta Co since about the mid to late 1700s.
I found a great deal of info on them but I’m having some “computer issues” – output to the monitor is hit & miss with mostly ‘miss’ , so I’ll get it posted as soon as practical.
Bill

January 15, 2007 at 4:41 pm #24435A “monitor surprise”… it works this time 🙂
Judging what you posted, you’ve seen the 1930 Montgomery Co., Va Census showing Frank and Katie’s family next door to Harvy and Ida Shepherd’s family.
1920 Montgomery Co., Va Census: ED111 Blacksburg Magisterial District; 7, 8 June; Pepper’s Ferry Road; Sheet 3A;
Household 42:
SHEPPARD, Frank; Teamster/coal mine; m, W, 39; Va, Va, Va.

Not found yet in 1910, which leaves us with only the later association.

Not found yet in 1900, but having looked back a generation and then came forward, this will cement the relationship when all data is compared.

…………., Harvey E. ; W, m, 2, son, Va, Va, Va.
…………., Mary J. ; W, f, 8 months (b. Sept), dau, Va, Va, Va.
From the “My Hogan, dudding & Stultz” gen. site:
Henry Shepherd marr’d Lavenia Bradford (no date, no location)
This is probably correct altho I don’t usually use this kind of information except in this case it’s in a family tree whose particulars can be verified by census records and a Bradford researcher claims “Henry E. Shepherd” , b.abt. 1856 Montgomery Co., Va in their tree with Harvey E. (only child listed) .
This can be dubious, I think the records bear out this claim.

(no, I don’t know why Savannah’s last name is different but there could be a reason which the census taker thought was important since Christian is not recorded as owning any land OR personal property and Savannah is recorded with a person property value as is her daughter Mary. The question is usually answered by the assumption that the wife was widowed when they married. I don’t know. )

Not all Ministers of the Gospel in this time period and earlier, believed in turning in their records of marriages to the State, apparently believing it was a “Holy” state of matrimony not involving the ‘State’ . “Ministers’ Returns” were often “Lost” or not even recorded when turned into the County Clerk, depending on what ‘denomination’ the Minister happened to be.
A Montgomery Co., Va Marr. Rec. Index lists who I think this Christian and Sarah to be – it’s an opinion:
“Christian Shepherd m’d Cyrena Slusser, 6 November 1837” .
…………………………………………………….
I found ‘bits & pieces’ scattered thru several family trees, which you can probably use as a good roadmap for your research:
Phillip Christian Shepard
b.abt. 1819 Montgomery Co., Va
d. 1901 same.
Married
Savannah Snider
b.abt. 1826 Montgomery Co., Va.
d.abt. 1910 same.
Parents of P. Christian Shepard:
George S. Scheppert
(no dates – hasn’t been researched, so the rest may only be a clue… or not)
m’d 3 October 1797 Montgomery Co., Va (from the Index)
Elizabeth Harless,
dau of Edmund Emanuel Harless, b.abt. 1760 Augusta Co., Va; d. 1796 (but this stated location of Fluvanna Co., Va may indicate someone ‘grasped’ at info, so the date and location is suspect). Edmund’s wife may be Elizabeth Seiler/ Seilor, b.abt. 1765 Augusta Co., Va per that info. This info may or may not ‘hang together’ under closer scrutiny.
This Edmund’s father is purported to be:
Johan Philip Harless, b.abt. 1716 Palatinate, Germany, d. 1772 Christiansburg, Augusta Co., Va – no info on wife.
……………………………………………………….
Most of the unanswered questions can probably be resolved by digging up some more records.

January 15, 2007 at 4:41 pm #24441Bill, thanks for all the info. Wow! It’s a lot more than I had. I noticed on the later census info the race was always listed as white. This is not too surprising, given VA’s “Indian policy” at the time, but I was wondering if you knew of any Saponi/Tutelo/Ocaneechi connection with the Shepherd/Bradford names. Also, did you find anything on the Barker name? Thanks again.
Tim
