I have only been on the forum for a couple of months and been reading a lot of posts and have posted a couple of times before about this. My greatgrandmother was Rosa Nichols and the only information I have on her is that she was born Jan. 6, 1875 in Halifax Co. VA or NC???). She is the one I cannot find any further information on, no mother’s or father’s name.
She married Thomas Burchell about 1890 and moved to Leaksville NC, Rockingham Co. (now named Eden, NC)around 1894. I can find reference to Thomas and Rosa in some later census in Rockingham Co. Thomas died between 1910-1920…why such a big gap, I don’t know. Rosa remarried to Richard Mitchell but I can find no trace of her after Thomas’s death. Thomas and Rosa’s daughter Margie was my grandmother and she married Thomas B. Thompson, b.Sept. 1892, d.Sept.1959.
I was told a lot of this info from my grandmother when I was young and as many have stated here, she always said we were NA. I had assumed Cherokke. A cousin of my mother’s recently told me Blackfoot. I have read other post here that the Thompson name may also be NA. My grandparents, my mother and her brothers all looked NA very much.
I would appreciate it if anyone might be able to help me with my Rosa connection or at least give me some guidance in where to look. Geneaology is somewhat new to me but I want to know my hertitage.
Thanks so much!
March 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #30250Hi Robin, My GG-Grandmother~~Sarah Jane Nichols b 1841 Nicolas VA d 1914 In. Your Rosa could possibley be a neice? (just going on b dates and location (Virginia). If I find any ties, will post. There are other people with Nichols here too-~BlondeyeLaurie, for one. Good Luck in your search and Blessings~~Greydove~^~
March 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #30256Hi Greydove! I do not have any other information on Rosa and her family…I sure would like to find some! She died in 1936 and I got her born/died dates from her headstone. But no one in the family remembers any other member of her family. I know my grandmother Rosa’s dau.) would tell me stuff but then immediately tell me not to repeat it…I know it was because she was NA and said that was why I was not to tell certain things. Of course, now many years later, most of it I can’t remember! My mother’s cousin that led me to the Blackfoot connection said Rosa’s mother may have been named Fannie, Frannie, or some name like that. This is all the info I can get.
Thanks for your thoughts and I hope we can find some connections.
Hugs to you!

March 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #30284Good afternoon Greydove!
Yes, I have that census…my grandmother was Margie, who was 8 1/2 at that time. There were more kids to come!
It would be fantastic if the Fannie Nichols you mention is Rosa’s mother!!! I have been looking and looking but it looks like I wasn’t looking in the right place! The way county lines changed, not knowing exactly where they lived or moved, and being rather new at this has me totally confused a lot! Is there someplace I should be looking other than Genweb, Rootsweb, etc.? Thanks so very, very much for this information and I will be waitung to hear if there is more. I am very gratefuk to you for your help!
Big hugs to you!

Per Thomas and Rosa’s son, Thomas William Burchell’s WWI Draft Card, he was born on August 3, 1895 in Henry County, Virginia. It was dated June 5, 1917 and mentions he supports his mother and 3 sisters, so you can narrow down Thomas’ death date from 1910 – 1917. Also, from the 1920 census, Thomas and Rosa’s daughter Thelma was 6, so she would have been born 1913-14. So you can narrow Thomas’ death date even further to 1913 – 1917. And, in the 1920 census, Rosa was listed with Richard Mitchell. Their marriage date would have been around 1917 – 1920.
I did a quick search for Rosa in the 1880 census, but didn’t see anything that matched. To find Rosa’s family, you could get a copy of her obituary or a copy of her death record and see if parents names and her birth county are listed.
Good Luck,
Stacey
March 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #31112WOW Stacey!!! You don’t know how I feel to see all of this information!!! As I had said earlier, I am new at some of this and I now know from yours and Greydove’s post that I have lots of “looking” and searching to do!
I have been looking on the NC State site to see about getting a copy of Rosa’s death certificate but I haven’t quite figured that out either! (The one time I filled out the application online and it asked for what relationship, daughter, son, mother father, etc., it did not give the option of me as ggd. I’ll keep looking into that.) I’d like to know Rosa’s parents and if they were actually Blackfoot. I am hoping if i can get her death certificate that i can know their names.
This is the first time I had seen any information on the Mitchell that Rosa married.
Once, again, a great big Thank You! for all this info!
Take care!
March 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #31153Stacey, applause. Great job.
March 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #31174Hello again Beeleaf! I hope all is well with you and yours. YES!!! Great job with the information Stacey gave me. I am so thrilled and grateful!
Take care!
