Im looking for anything on Henry Shepard born in 1860 and died in 1935 in Hamtrack Michigan Wayne County. His wifes name was Jessie and his daughters names were Matilda and Marion. Im looking for his parents names and Jessies parents names. They would be my great, great grand parents.
March 6, 2007 at 5:53 pm #25227Hi, Jennifer,
None of the ages listed for him on census records are consistent, but the family members’ names match up. Let me know if this is them.
1930 Wayne Co., Mi Census; ED309 Detroit, Pct 28, 10th Ward; 9 April; Sheet 10B; 2688(?) Gladstone Ave; Household 128:
SHEPARD, Henry; Contractor, House; m, W, 45, marr’d@ 18; Mi, Mi, Mi.
……….., Jessie; Wife, f, W, 40, marr’d@ 20; Mi, Mi, Mi.
……….., Margaret; dau, f, W, 17; Mi, Mi, Mi.
……….., Marion; dau, f, W, 13; Mi, Mi, Mi.
……….., Tillie; dau, f, W, 10; Mi, Mi, Mi.
1920 Wayne Co., Mi Census; ED325 Detroit, Dist. 14, 10th Ward; 12 Jan; Sheet 5A; 854 Gladstone Ave; Household 120:
SHEPARD, Henery; Contractor, Buildings; m, Bl, 53, marr’d; Mi, Mi, Mi.
…………, Jessie; Wife, f, W, 40, marr’d; Mi, England, New York.
…………, Margaret; dau, f, W, 7; Mi, Ohio, Mi.
…………, Marion; dau, f, Mu, 4; Mi, Mi, Mi.
…………, Mathilda; dau, f, Mu, 1, Mi, Mi, Mi.
REYNOLDS, Emma; Mother-in-law; f, W, 60, Widow; NY, NY, NY.
(Margaret’s father b. Ohio)
Living next door to Henry & Jessie in 1920 is a William Webb, 32, b.Tenn, and wife Fanny, 22, b.Tenn, with his sister Sally SHEPARD, 40, b. Tenn, living with them. This could be a coincidence since their origins don’t match Henry’s b. Mich (or Canada), but it is something you might want to check out.
In 1910 Wayne Co., Mi Census, a Henry Shepard, House Carpenter, Mu, 44, b. Canada; immigrated to U.S. 1871 and Naturalized by this census year, is the only Henry Shepard (various spellings checked) there then, but may not be your Henry. There is a Henry Shepard who immigrated to U.S. (Detroit) from Canada in 1866 (but age not listed on Index) per U.S. Immigration Lists, this just doesn’t come together for me.
The mother-in-law Emma Reynolds, listed above (b.Apr 1863 NY or b.abt.1858 NY), was marr’d to George Reynolds, b. Jan 1852 (or b.abt. 1849), b. England; immigrated to U.S. from Canada in 1862. They had a daughter Jessie May, b.abt. 1876, Michigan. This info from the 1880 & 1900 Wayne Co., Mi Census.
On the 1880 Wayne Co. Census, George & Emma Reynolds lived next door to:
William Reynolds, 55, b.England
Anna, wife, 45, b. Eng.
Jane, dau, 20, b.Eng.
Arthur, son, 18, b. Eng.
Elizabeth, dau, 14, b. Canada
William H., son, 11, b. Canada
Sarah M., dau, 9, b. Michigan
Jessie May, dau, 7, b. Michigan
….. I think William & Anna are probably George Reynolds’ parents.

March 6, 2007 at 5:53 pm #25228yes this is the family I am talking about but I have all of these names just not Henrys parents and I didnt know where he was from either except for when the family lived in Wayne County .
thank you for the info
March 6, 2007 at 5:53 pm #25256He’s not the Canadian Henry Shepard – found that bunch.
And he’s not the 1880 Wayne Co Henry Shepard, 19, b. Mich, whose parents were from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. The Germany info for them could be incorrect in 1870 & 1880, but that wouldn’t even make sense based on the 1920 census.
If you live in the Greater Detroit area, the library there has a large genealogical records section that you might try or the hospital someone else suggested, to track their children back or find Henry. I haven’t found any onling marriage or birth records for Wayne Co.
March 6, 2007 at 5:53 pm #25258Thanks Bill. The family with Henry, Jessie, Matilda, and Marion are my family but I dont know where Henry was born. The Sally Shepard name we found is Henrys sister I found that out from the library in Lansing Michigan.
I live in Lansing area but my sister wrote a letter to the Detroit library and they couldnt find anything on Henry either except that he was a carpenter. They told her to try the Hamtramck library. But havent been able to yet. But thank you for the info.
