November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #17751Hi Michael,
I have the info on Walter & Roxie’s family.
Without knowing any dates or knowing how old you are in order to guess-at the time-line, it’s difficult to know where to start looking, time-wise, on the Lynchs. Within a broad time line, this is the only Horace Lynch in that area that I’ve been able to turn-up:
1920 Halifax Co., NC Census; District 38, Faucette Twp;
2 January; Sheet 1A; Warrenton and Halifax Roads; at 9, 9:
LYNCH, Ras; Farmer-Rents; male, INDIAN, 51, marr’d; NC, NC, NC.
………., Ida; Wife; female, IN, 47, marr’d; NC, NC, NC.
………., Willie; son, m, IN, 15, NC, NC, NC.
………., HORACE; son, m, IN, 18, NC, NC, NC.*******
………., Blanch; dau, f, IN, 13, NC, NC, NC.
………., LaVI?nia(?), dau, f, In, 8, NC, NC, NC.
………., Ryland; son, m, IN, 6, NC, NC, NC.
LYNCH, Christine; dau; f, IN, 20, NC, NC, NC.
………., Maggie; Grand-dau; f, IN, 1 yr + 2 months, NC, NC, NC.
The first “NC” is where that individual is reportedly born.
The second “NC” is where that individual’s father is reportedly born.
The third “NC” is where that individual’s mother is reportedly born.
This Horace Lynch was born 22 Aug 1901 in Halifax Co., NC according to NC Birth Indexes and Social Security Admin. records and died 30 Nov 1992, in Holister, Halifax Co., NC.
Does the information for this Horace Lynch correspond to what you know about your eldest Horace Lynch?

November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #17852Per the 1870 Halifax Co., NC Census for Formosa Twp, p. 71,
Dudley LYNCH’s parents Thomas and Nancy, and siblings James, Ellen & Sidney, were living with Charles LYNCH, age 83 (b.abt. 1787, and Charles’s 3rd (?) wife Mary “Polly”, 43.
Halifax Co., NC Marriage Bond Records show Charles Lynche and Mary Scott took out a marriage bond on 18 Dec 1844. Bondsman: Stephen Lynch.
On the 1850 Halifax census, Stephen Lynch is 65 yrs old, b.abt. 1785, so he may be Charles’s brother.

November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #17931A “One World Tree” on ancestry.com, by a descendant of Josephine Richardson, lists Al’s father as John Richardson, b. 1855; d. 9 April 1936 Halifax Co., NC. The John, b.1855, is a different John Richardson.
The John who is probably the father of Al Richardson, was born abt. 1862.
The “Tree” lists Al’s mother as Sallie Hawley, b. abt. 1871, but she would be too young to be Al’s mother, so she’s probably a second wife, and possibly the mother of the rest of the children.
Sallie’s listed as d. 24 Dec 1937 Halifax Co., NC.
That “Tree” lists the children of John Richardson and Sallie Hawley as:
Al, b. 1881.
Andrew, b. 1886.
Joel, b. 1888 (twin).
Josephine, b. 1888 (twin).
Wardell, b. 1892.
Drubell, b. 1896.
Earnest L., b. 1898.
Maggie, b. 1901.
John R., b. 1904.
Arthur, b. 1907.
(all years are “about”)
I can not confirm Sallie’s maiden name of Hawley nor find any family there by that name, but I haven’t tried spelling variations yet.
Illegible (smudged) lines on the 1900 Halifax Co., NC Census for Dist 24 Brinkleyville Twp, Knights Store Pct; 2 June; Sheet 1A, makes it impossible to prove with census records that Al Richardson, b.abt. 1881, is the son of John, b. abt. 1862. The strong inference that he is John’s son is the close proxmity he lived to John and his purported siblings.
There are at least 3, if not 4, illegible lines on that 1900 census page:
———————————– illegible line
———————————– illegible line
———————————– illegible line
……………….Andrew; son, Aug 1886, 13.
……………….Joel; son, Aug 1888, 11.
……………….Josephine; dau, Aug 1888, 11.
……………….Wardell; son, July 1892, 7.
……………….Drewbell; son, Jan 1896, 4.
……………….Earnest L.; son, Jan 1898, 2.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
That “One World Tree” listed the parents of John, b. 1862, as John Richardson and Louisa _?_.
The Halifax Co., NC Marriage Bonds lists:
John Richardson and Louisa Richardson; bond on 28 Dec 1846 in Halifax Co., NC; Bondsman: Daniel Cole.
1880 Halifax Co., NC Census; Dist 135 Brinkleyville Twp; 21 June; p.48A; family 411:
RICHARDSON, John; 47, laborer.
……………….., Louisa; 45, wife.
……………….., JOHN; 18, son ********
……………….., Humphrey; 17, son.
……………….., Bettie; 13, dau.
……………….., Beda (?), 9, dau.
=========================
Compare these children’s names with the 1880 and 1860 census:
1870 Halifax Co., NC; Formosa Twp; 8 Sept; p.62; P.O: Brinkleyville, Va; family 488:
RICHARDSON, John; 45, male, laborer, R.E.$0; Pers.Prop $0.
…………………, Lou; 38, female.
…………………, Sol; 15, m. (Soloman W. )
…………………, Polly; 14, f. (Polly is the nickname for Mary)
…………………, Sallie; 13, f. (Sallie)
…………………, Ann; 12, f. (same as Frances?)
…………………, JOHN; 8, m. ********
…………………, Charles; 7, m. (same as Humphrey?)
…………………, Cornelius; 3, m.
…………………, Eliza; 2, f. (Bettie is a common name for Eliza and Elizabeth)
1860 Halifax Co., NC Census; Western District; 26 July; p. 59; P.O: Ringwood, NC; family 583:
John RICHARDSON, 28, m, Farmer; $225, $330. (he’s prob. older)
Eliza…………………, 38, f. (prob. younger)
Arulla……………….., 13, f. (prob. m’d before 1870)
Jane…………………, 11, f, (ditto)
Soloman W……….., 10, m.
Mary…………………, 4, f.
Sallie…………………, 2, f.
Frances…………….., 1, f.
I suspect that “Eliza” is the same person as Louisa but have no straight forward proof except:
John m’d Louisa in 1846….
Louisa is the mother of John (1862) in 1870 ….
his older siblings are listed as if their mother is “Eliza”
Lou/Louisa is the wife in 1846 and in 1870 and 1880;
So, “Eliza must be Louisa”.
Hedgepeths later.

John & Sarah have been married for 7 years so only Plummer and Bettie are Sarah’s children, as well as the younger children listed in 1910.
I was unable to locate John in 1880 with any certainty nor discover Sarah’s maiden name.
There is a John Hedgepeth, 26 and his wife Laura, 19, on the 1880 census for Brinkleyville Twp which may be him and his 1st wife, but I have no way of determining that because there are more than one John Hedgepeths in 1870 and 1860, with enough variability in the information to make any sensible comparison impossible.

November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #23426The 1920 census listing Ras Lynch as Indian is rare find, isn’t it? How often do you see that around Halifax?
I have Harrises named Lucy, William, Thomas, Gordy and Charles, too. Interesting.
November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #23441hi linda I am curious, why is it rare for my great grandfather from halifax county to be indian.that5 is where my whole family is from and we r indians
November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #23443It IS rare for him to be listed as such. That’s what I’m saying, how many other Halifax people are noted this way?
It was legislated in colonial times that people were to be listed as either black or white, and it only got worse from there. Then in the 20th century Plecker went through and changed anybody still listed as Indian to black. (Hitler had a picture of Plecker in his office, he admired him so much.) All through the south it was like that. And that’s why it’s so unusual to find somebody noted as “Indian.” You’ve got something really special there. See where it leads.
November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #34487Linda,what was plecker’s first name,I’m trying to find out more information as to who he was exactly.By the way I did find my old thread’s.
November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #34488I googled “Plecker” and this came right up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Ashby_Plecker
I love Wiki.
Those Harrises are interesting. Lot of the same given names as in my family, which were being used frequently, too, William, Charles, Lucy, Gordon, Thomas. Lots of other folks from Granville County were in Vernon Co, WI, too. I’ll have to remember this thread.
November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #34490There are quite a few postings about Plecker, if you use the search feature here on the website.
November 26, 2005 at 4:14 am #34492Believe it or not some of the Eastern Tribes have the same mentality as Plecker. They have a way of telling people that they dont have native ancestry. That’s what I don’t understand if a person has the ancestry then let them in. I bet if my grandma knew how her decendants were being treated she would have a cow!
