Peace Everyone
This is my first post.
My father’s family is from Sugarfork, Macon County and I am having a hard time pinpointing the Stewart and Chavis lines before Macon. I think I have my Guys straight.
Well- Ruffin was born in 1812/3 in Orange County. His 1st wife was Elizabeth Bibby and his 2nd wife was Mary Jane Eppes/Evans, born 1825 in Halifax, NC. They went to Macon in 1846 and bought a farm next to Silas McDowell and a Guy family.
We have the repeating names of Ruffin, Louvinia, and Saphronia/ Sophronia. Anyone know of this family?
thanks, akhasa
March 20, 2006 at 9:33 pm #19874Hi, Akhasa. Welcome.
I have a marr. record for Ruffin to Elizabeth Bibby of 1838 Orange County and several census records that follow them thru Orange & Person to Macon Co. by which time (Macon) Ruffin is marr’d to Mary.
There are several people on the Forum related to Stewart/Stuart and Epps.
Are you looking for their parents?
Bill
p.s…. which Chavis are you looking for?

Yes, I am looking for their parents and siblings. There are so many Stewarts to unravel. Mary F (Francis) Stewart is listed in the Person County census with a 19 year old son named Ruffin. Her husband was Rufus, so I think this is a cousin. Also, she is in a Stewart to Stewart marriage? (her father was James. D. Stewart of Person and Caswell- 4 of his girls married other Stewarts!)
I think (repeat think) that Ruffin of 1812 was the son of Neverson Stewart who married _______ Jones. Also, does anyone know if Robt. Stewart who married _____ Jones is the same as Robt/Rept Stewart who was married to Anne Mason at an older age?
What do you have on Ruffin and Elizabeth Bibby in Orange? I was wondering if a group went west around 1846, and he decided to stop off and stay or if a group came directly from Person- I think I saw that in something by Forest Hazel. He bought a farm next to Clark Guy.
Chavis
I am trying to trace
1. Ruffin Chaves- don’t know if he’s related
2. Lydia, Hannah, and Sammual Chavis who were indentured to Puryears. Lydia, a weaver/ spinstress, went to Person with Rebecca Puryear, and her son Jefferson went to Macon.
Thanks for sharing,
akhasa
March 20, 2006 at 9:33 pm #19956From NC Marriage Bonds database:
Ruffin Stewart & Elizabeth Bibby.
Marriage Bond 30 Aug 1838 Orange Co., NC
Bondsman: Robert Mitchel.
Witness: J. Taylor (probably the court clerk).
……………………
The only BIBBY nearby in 1840 is Soloman Bibby in Franklin Co, with Ruffin and Caldwel Steward living in Person Co (p.299) .
In 1830 Orange Co., NC Census, p.324:
line 5: Sally Stewart
line 9: James Stewart
line 15? : Sam’l Stewart
line 18: Neverson Stewart
line 19: Francis Stewart

Elizabeth’s parents are Solomon Bibby and Charity Young. Robert Mitchel (bond) married Sopha Bibby- a sister of Eliz. The were in Franklin County NC as opposed to Franklin Township, in Macon, NC.
Caldwell Stewart married Viney Mitchel- she may be related to Robert?

Is anyone familiar with an Epps or Evans family that moved to Person County before 1840? I am looking for the parents and siblings of Mary Jane Epps/ Evans.
She was the 2nd wife of Ruffin Stewart, Mary was born about 1825. A census record (1850 Macon NC) says she was born in Halifax, NC. One of her sons later stated (for a death certificate for his sister) that she was from Person County.

March 20, 2006 at 9:33 pm #37515Akhasa, It was so good to reconnect with you at the powwow. It’s always good to share research with someone who understands the reality of the truth.
Here are the 2 links we talked about.

March 20, 2006 at 9:33 pm #37570So good to see you back at Saponitown. Your families are core of this group that dispersed out of old Granville. I suspect that the advancements in DNA testing/databases will help clarify some of these lines that the paper trail cannot solve.
