The signers of the 1677 Treaty between Virginia and the “Indians” included to Chiefs from the Maherians. I have been trying to locate information on the Maherians with no luck.
My ancestry goes back to a Domingo Maderias in the area around Dragon Swamp, Virginia. He first shows in 1658 and is connected with a James Johnson who owned a lot of land around the areas of King William, Middlesex, King & Queen County and New Kent. Much of the land was issued from James Johnson as part of the 1677 treaty for the “Indians”.
We have speculated that Domingo was of Portuguese descent, but some recent investigations hint at a possible Pamunkey link and the Maherians name really stands out. Name changes took place over time with phonetic rules and to go from Maherians to Maderias is a simple one.
Can anyone provide me with any information that may shed some light on the Maherians?

Linda thank you for your reply. I had not heard of the Meherrins until yesterday. I have not been able to find any info on them yet. Is there a good place to find information about them? Do they have a web site? I would appreciate any assist.
