Marriage roster for Monican Indians:
Has anyone seen this rooster? I saw on the VA List mention of it and have asked for a copy. It is 4 pages from what I understand. It does not include my family lines but I thought it might be of interest to others. I will share it if it comes through. 2PI
I received these Marriage Rolls from Bucky Harris via the VA list, if anyone is interestd I will post them/upload them. One at a time. The files together is very large. Perhaps it belongs over in Shared Research. The rolls include many surnames…Adcock, Dillard, Duff, Hamilton, Johns etc. just to name a few.

This Monican clan is from the Bear Mountain tribe only. There were two tribes of Monicans in this area. The ones at Bear Mountain (the roster attached) and another group at Irish Creek in Rockbridge county (on the West side of the Blue Ridge mountain).. The Monican museum in Amherst County (about 5 miles west of Amherst CH on Bear Mountain) has the history of the tribe at Irish Creek but not a marriage roster. I can recall the Bias, Tyree, Clark, Southers,Sorrels. Terry, Knuckles, Carr, Vest, etc. If you are in the area, you need to read and study this history of the Irish Creek tribe. Also, there is a Bolling/Bowling/Boleing family clan from Amherst County that tracks their heritage back to the Powhatan tribe. Regards, Bucky Harris, Staunton, Va”

I checked the file size and these are too large to upload to site and after double checking dates on some marriages. Some are after 1938. MOSt are before from 1700 on with a few in the 1930 and 1940. If anyone is intereted they can email me and I will forward them the files privately. Apparently this is why they were not posted publicly to Ancestry’s VA list. (it is a shame these can’t go on the list for everyone to see… Bill had me double check the dates!)

Hello everyone, I apparently can not upload these rolls (they are too large) and there is a privacy issue with some marriages after 1930. I have had trouble forwarding them because of the size too. My machine times out or blocks them and I am not sure why. I think I managed to get copies to techteach and Bill. Bill is going over them to sort things out.
I will forward to those indivdual who sent me their request already, but first I have to fiqure out why they are not going through and I get error and timeout.

Some time ago, Bright Star posted a document on one of the other forums. It was related to some controversy as to whether the names on the list were Monacan or Cherokee. It was referred to as a “roll”, but contained marriage info. Some had dates, others did not. For the life of me, I cannot remember the forum. I will try to find it.

Hello everyone, I am sorry for the delay in getting back to those that have asked me to send the pages of the rolls to them. I think I managed to get them sent this morning. I sent them again to Bill. There is a privacy issue as stated in regards to some of the marriages being after 1930 so they can not be posted on the forum from what I understand. The person who sent them to me was on the VA List over on Ancestry.com and said they were Monacan/Monican. I think that Bill located them by Googling them. As I was having trouble sending them because of their size and my dial up connection/and virus scan program. If these are true Marriage records they could be very helpful to many on surnames and dates.
In my own research I have just found where the Cundiff name intersects with Adcock on another list. I am not sure how it connects to my family Blackfoot lines/Powhatan Chiefdom descendant, since the Adcock name appears on the Monacan Marriage rolls. Interesting too as the Moncans and Powhatans were not friendly to one another from what I gather so far. Or am I wrong?! I know that intermarriages were made between tribes too. It was common /accepted practice for peace between some tribes.
If you received the rolls that I sent, please drop me a private email, so I can relax! Bill is going to go over the rolls and try to sort things out .Thanks, 2PI
