Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I have a lot of surnames that are loose ends that are here on Saponi and or the Chowanoke descendants forum. It is difficult to list all the surnames but will in time. It is exciting when I find names that have no last name and are classified as Native like Oh Ko We Ki, but many of my English names are consistent with tribal names. The white side of the family is easy to run down to a boat coming over from Europe.
My wife is Cheraw through Maky Nancy Hawkins Whitefeather who had survived a small pox epidemic and was taken in by the Cherokee. She married into the Harrelson and her granddaughter Lavina married Dr. Richard Massey. The elder Richard Massey was born 1747 in Brunswick, VA married a Dorothy LNU.
Whitefeather’s husband was William James Harrelson II and was a long hunter. His father William I was born in Pittsylvania, Va. and married Jane Anderson and grandparents were a Paul Harrelson and Patience Lewis, great grandparents Major John Lewis and Isabella Miller.
Is there any compiled source of information about long hunters?
I’d like to recommend two books from Ted Franklin Belue on the subject.
Also I would like to recommend trying to get your hands on the microfilm rolls through inter-library loan of the Draper Manuscripts. You should look at the index first and then begin your search. It was in this collection that I found proof that my Skaggs ancestors were in fact Long Hunters and actually did hunt with the Cherokee in the Cumberland Valley.
