Hi Everyone, I recently found out my GG Grandmother was “Blackfoot” Indian. Her name was Sarah Francis Mathis. She was born abt 1859 in TN. All I know of her ancestors is that her father’s name is Toby Mathis. She married my GG Grandfather Marion Palmer in TN in 1878. He (Marion) was born abt 1857 in TN. After they married they moved to Southern IL. a few years later. Their daughter Martha Hollie Palmer (My G Grandmother) was born in TN abt 1898 before they moved to S. IL.. Many family members have said Sarah Mathis Palmer was a “Blackfoot” Indian. I found some marriage records online that had her listed as Mathews instead of Mathis, which I gather is a common thing. I would appreciate any info. anyone may have. Thank-You Very Much!!!, Jeff Dean Bunyard, St. Louis, MO.

October 24, 2006 at 8:54 pm #23392Hi again Bill, I think we really are talking about the same people!!! From your post I assumed I must have mentioned Roane County TN. I just read my origonal post and I don’t believe I mentioned Roane County. I’m not certain that they were married in Roane County, but I do know they moved from Roane County a few years after marrying to Southern Il. They must be the same people!! Please let me know what you know about them if you don’t mind!! Thanks!!!, Jeff in St. Louis
October 24, 2006 at 8:54 pm #23402Hi Again Bill, I talked to my Mom today and she believes his full name was Benjamin Marion Palmer. Look forward to hearing what you have to say! Thanks!!! Jeff in St. Louis
October 24, 2006 at 8:54 pm #23404He was identified on the 1900 Jackson Co., Ill Census as “Ben M” and on 1910 census as “Marion B” .
From Tn Marr Index 1851-1900, by Jordan R. Rodd:
“B. M. Palmour + Sarah F. Mathis, 18 August 1878, Roane County, Tn”
From the 1880 Roane Co., Tn Census; ED226 Civil District 12; 12 June; p.22; HH 183
PALMARE, Marion; W, m, 21, Farmer, Ga, Ga, Ga.
…………, Sarah F; W, f, 23, Wife; Tn, Tn, Tn.
…………, Sarah F; W, f, 7/12 (Nov) Dau; Tn, Ga, Tn.
HH185
PALMARE, Simeon; W, m, 43, Farmer; Ga, SC, SC.
…………, Francis; W, f, 44, Wife; NC, NC, NC.
…………, Micus M; W, f, 15, Dau; Tn, Ga, NC
…………, John B; W, m, 12, Son; Tn, Ga, NC
…………, Susan A; W, f, 10, Dau; Tn, Ga, NC
…………, James M; W, m, 8, Son; Tn, Ga, NC
…………, Soloman; W, m, 5, Son; Tn, Ga, NC
…………, Nancy C; W, m, 5, Son; Tn, Ga, NC
(the last two are twins)
Palmer is often found as Palmar, Palmare, Palmour, Palmore on older records.
A One World Tree listing says Simeon and Francis are the parents of Benjamin Marion Palmer, b. 31 May 1859 Rison Farms, Ga; d. 1945 Pomona, Jackson Co., Ill. I don’t know where “Rison Farms” is but Simeon was in 1850 Lumpkin Co., Ga, Robinson’s District.
Several addition census records show other associations between Simeon’s children listed above and Benj. Marion, i.e., John B(oone) Palmer, d. 20 Feb 1958 in Jackson Co., Ill, having lived 1900 in Jackson Co., Ill and in Roane Co., Tn in 1910. Soloman L. is listed as Marion B’s brother on the 1900, 1910 & 1920 Jackson Co., Ill census, the later as “Lerinzo” .
Simeon Matthias Palmer, b. 18 Feb 1835 Ga; d. 23 Mar 1885 Roane Co., Tn
marr’d 9 Oct 1856 (Lumpkin ? Co) Ga
Sarah Francis Brewer, b. 23 Dec 1835 NC; d. 15 Apr 1882 Roane Co., Tn.
(dau of Wilson Brewer, b.abt. 1803 NC and Elizabeth _?_ b.abt. 1806 NC)
Soloman Palmer, b.abt. 1814 SC is probably Simeon’s father but I’m still firming up his mother’s name and more on Mathis later.
October 24, 2006 at 8:54 pm #23420Dear Bill, Thank-You Very Much for all the information!!! That is SO KIND of you to have looked that up and I want you to know I really appreciate it!! At first I thought you must be related to them too but I realize now that you just looked up that info. It is correct too after talking to my Mom in more depth. Thanks Again!!! Jeff in St. Louis
October 24, 2006 at 8:54 pm #23427I thought I’d posted earlier about the Matthews, but apparently I didn’t. Richard Haithcock has found the Matthews names in families he believes are Saponi descended. The Palmer name occurs among Indian descended people in Mecklenburg County, VA, old Saponi (Piedmont Siouan) lands. We believe the Blackfoot ID is a marker for the Piedmont Siouan, it occurs so often among people connected to this lineage, however far they may have migrated. We have an article at http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm. My great grandfather was born in Wabash county, IL.
