I was told by my grandfather, John Turner, that we are blackfeet. He showed me a black and white photo of his grandfather standing next to a huge turtle which I would guess to be taken in the early 1900’s. His grandfather definitely looked Native American, but blackfeet doesn’t make sense since everyone in our family’s genealogy can be traced back to McMinn County Tennessee. In trying to figure this out, I came across Saponitown. But now, I think my head is even more twisted in a knot! 🙂
These are my ancestors:
Turners: John Winston, Ezekiel Johns, Jefferson Davis, Unknown, and Haysher H.. All of these men can be traced back to McMinn County, TN. Haysher can be further traced to Virginia, then Delaware, and then Ireland.
Charmichael: Jane; Traced to Scotland
Johns: Susan Elizabeth, Ezekiel Jr., and Ezekiel Sr.. All are traced back to McMinn County. Ezekiel Sr. had a wife named Lydia whose origin is unknown.
Richards: Adaline & Leonora; origin unknown
Black: Julia Agnes, James Marshall Jr. & James Marshall Sr.. Although Julia’s death was in McMinn County, the origin of her parents, James Marshall Jr. and Elizabeth Wade are unknown.
Wade: Elizabeth; origin unknown
If anyone recognizes McMinn County or one of the names listed above, please contact me at cmdale70@msn.com I’d appreciate any information you can offer. My guess is that our Blackfeet ancestry is from the Blacks since they are the only ones whose genealogy dead ends.
June 15, 2007 at 3:31 am #26966Hi Christine,
May I first say that your avatar is lovely. I do so enjoy the pictures.
I hope others more knowledgable than I will answer you. Have you entered your names in the search feature?
I recognize Wade, Richards, and Turner as names I think I recall seeing here. And then you can enter your names, dates and info under Share Genealogy and someone may help you out. ~ Glad you have joined us.:)
June 15, 2007 at 3:31 am #26969Thanks! 🙂
I laid out everything in front of me this morning and tried to figure out who was in the photo by process of elimination.
The only two men who would have been the right age for the photo were Jefferson Davis Turner and James Marshall Black. I have a photo of Jefferson, so I know he is definitely not Native American.
I have very little information for James.
His daughter, my great-grandmother, was Julia Agnes Black:
Julia Agnes Black
Born 7 Nov 1892 in McMinn County, TN
Died 1 Sep 1951 in McMinn County, TN
Married Ezekiel Johns Turner in McMinn County, TN
Her parents were James Marshall Black & Elizabeth Wade:
James Marshall Black
Born 13 Nov 1866
Died 30 Sep 1956 in McMinn County TN
Nancy Elizabeth Wade
Born 4 Apr 1866
Died 19 May 1954
James’ parents were James Marshall Black and Vesta Emily Green:
James Marshall Black
Born 16 Jul 1832 possibly in TN
Married 1 Oct 1851 in Meigs County, TN
Died 21 Jan 1906 in TN
Vesta Emily Green
Born 4 Mar 1832 in Meigs County, TN
Died 01 Mar 1915 in McMinn County, TN
Vesta’s mother’s name was Hannah.
June 15, 2007 at 3:31 am #26972Welcome Christine,
You can use the search function and look for your surnames. I can assure you that you will find Green, as that is one of my surnames. There are at least two Green lines here on this forum, though. Mine doesn’t connect with the other one that I am aware of. However, the Blackfoot story is in my line too, as is the case with many of us.

James Marshall Black:
The only BLACK in 1850 Meigs Co, Tn is in the 22nd Subdivision, p.409, Household 809:
George M. Black, 54, m, W, Blacksmith, $0, Va.
Frances……….., 40, f, W, NC.
MARSHALL…….., 15, m, W, Tenn (George M?? or James??) age is close.
John……………., 14, m, W, Tenn
James………….., 13, m, W, Tenn
Harriet…………., 4, f, W, Tenn.
but I can’t fathom why they might have 2 James, if indeed both are their sons. I didn’t find any of this family in 1860 records. I have doubts this is the correct family but they may be related.

The Ezekiel Johns Sr in your notes, appears to be a “Jr”.
The Ezekiel Johns on the 1830 McMinn Co., Tenn Fed Census is 60 to 69 yrs old.
Ezekiel Johns on the 1840 McMinn Co., Tenn Fed Census is 30 to 39 yrs old and corresponds to the Ezekiel Johns, Susan’s father, on the 1870 McMinn Census with Lenora Richards, 62, in his household.
The probability is high that the older Ezekiel is the father of the younger one and a family tree was found purporting this to be fact:
Ezekiel Johns, b. abt. 1808 Buncombe Co., NC, d. 1880’s McMinn Co., Tn
parents purported to be:
Ezekiel Johns, b.abt. 1771 Mecklenburg Co., NC, d. 1830’s McMinn Co., Tn,

I haven’t been able to push your Richards or Turner people back further.

June 15, 2007 at 3:31 am #27023I can’t even find words to express my gratitude!!! I never expected to find out this much information, much less to have someone so generously spend their own time digging!!!
My mind is just swimming right now!!! THANK YOU! 🙂
The birthdate does seem to be a little off for James Marshall Black… and I found James’ parents written on the back of my Pedigree Chart… they are listed as G.W. Black and Elizabeth Jinnings.
G. W. Black
Born 12 Feb 1800 in White County, TN
Married 1825 in White County, TN
Died aft 1838 in Carroll County, Arkansas
Elizabeth Jinnings
Born 2 Jul 1804 in White County, TN
But, I have a hunch that Techteach is right and the blackfoot line would be through Vesta Emily Green. Vesta and James are listed as having lived in Meigs, White, and McMinn Counties… all in Tennessee, I believe.
I found a James M. Black and Vesta E. Black on the 1880 census for Meigs County. Their ages and children match, so I’m sure it’s them. James lists his parents as having been born in Virginia (father) and North Carolina (mother) while Vesta lists hers as being born in Tennessee. Both are listed as white, not native american… of course, my son’s birth certificate lists his father as caucasion and he’s full-blood Ojibwe… so, how do you know for sure!?
For the rest, my mind is just swimming and I’ll have to try to absorb everything… I’ll post more later.
Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! 🙂
June 15, 2007 at 3:31 am #27227What a lot of us have found is that, if you find one Indian line, you’ll find others, they all ran together. So I’d suggest looking at your Turners, also, I’ve seen that name come up, and Richards, and as Techteach said, the Greens.
I had Ulms in Berks Co, PA in the same time frame. Some of them ended up in WV, I suspect marrying native women. If your Wertemburgers were in the same community, you may be able to trace them back to Germany. The Lutheran church kept really good records way, way back.
June 15, 2007 at 3:31 am #27350Welcome Christine
JOHNS is one of the core names of the Monacan tribe of Amherst Co, Va.
