I hit a dead-end with Rush, but I’m just doing amateur internet research.
Some of the Meltons of this branch do seem to have some native american features.
January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #18555Welcome Karen!
Karen and I have e-mailed each other in the past few days. We suspect the Meltons connect us somehow. I haven’t been able to find anything on Rush either. Maybe someone else will be able to help get this line back further.
And Karen, if you have other lines you are working on you should post those too. You just never know who will connect to you!
Glad you found us! Sue J
January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #18781Bill,
Any way to get this line back any further?
The only Rush I found was born around 1850 Carrol co Va.
I hated to see this thread just get buried.

January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #18785Look for Rush Melton, 70, SC; and Sarah, 40? or 44?, SC; on the 1850 Lowndes Co., Ala Census, Rocky Mount District.
Their marriage in Montgomery Co., Ala on 31 Dec 1826, indexes him as “Rasha” Melton. (Lowndes Co was created in 1830 from a piece of Montgomery, Butler & Dallas Counties)
He’s James R. Melton.
This is a ‘quick look’ and I haven’t proofed this, so each step needs to be verified:
His parents are on the 1850 Randolph Co., Ala census:
Michael Melton, b.abt. 1780 Va (or Orange Co., NC? )
and Rachael (Rush? ), b.abt. 1780 SC, d. 1860 Randolph Co., Ala.
Michael’s parents:
Ancel Melton, 1738 Orange Co., NC; d. 1790 Moore Co., NC;
m’d abt. 1770 Orange Co NC, Sarah _?_.
Ancel’s parents:
Robert Melton, b. 1696 St.Peters/St.Paul Parish, New Kent Co., Va; d. 1759 Orange Co., NC; m’d 23 Oct 1726 Albemarle Co., Va, Mary FARRAR, b. 1700 Henrico Co Va; d. 1746 Orange Co., NC.
Robert’s parents:
Richard Melton, b. 1670 New Kent Va, d. 1742 Hanover Co, Va; m’d abt. 1695 New Kent Meeting House (Quaker), Mary ROSS, b.abt. 1675 New Kent Va; d. 1750 Hanover Co., Va.
Richard’s parents:
William Melton, b. 1647 New Kent (Chas.City? ) Va, d. 1720 New Kent Va; m’d abt. 1667 Charles City Co., Va, Mary HOPWOOD, b.abt. 1650 Va, d. 1700, probably in New Kent.
William’s parents:
William Melton, b. 1620 Lancaster Co., England, d. 1670 Charles City Co., Va; m’d abt. 1640 Chas.City Co, Hannah _?_ , b.abt. 1624 England, d. 1647 Va.

January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #18804Bill, that is amazing… I can’t even begin to thank you. My family is thrilled to have this information. And I am thrilled to have a clear pathway to follow for “proof”. I suspected that “Rush” really might be his mother’s maiden name. I had found German/Swiss immigrants named “Rast” in the Carolinas with Rush Melton and had suspected that was the origin of “Rush” since the pronunciation in Swiss/Southern German would be “Rahsht”.
(I studied German).
And thanks to you Sue as well, it is so amazing to meet a distant cousin.
January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #18811Bill,
Thanks so much!
Karen,
Here is a Melton website with lots of info.
But does not really elaborate on Ancel.
The will of Robert Melton shows Nathan and Ancel as brothers though. Nathan married an Allen (other Melton/Allen marriages as well) so the Meltons connect for us way back!
Bill, this is a very well documented site.
I wonder about the Capt West Born Va dies in SC. I researched this before and thought it went back to the West and Croshaw lines, but didn’t post.
http://members.cox.net/melton/docs/MeltonRobertWill.htm
should be a separate thread on that though. See Corn too? Thanks again Bill!
Welcome Karen cuz!. This is Exciting!

January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #18903I have posted on the Thacker/Butler board, John Butler and Mary Thacker. My line of Butlers remained in Hanover County, VA until present day. GG Aunt Melcenia Butler (b: May 1873) married Joseph Hamilton Melton (b: 1868), son of David G. Melton, born circa 1824, who married Jane Bowles Wade. This is as far as I have gotten. Many Melton relatives still living in Hanover. No knowledge yet of NA ancestry, as most believe this branch of Melton’s descend from Sirwate de Melton, born 1100-1175 in England, and his descendant, Richard Melton Sr., born 1595 in England, died 1690 in Charles City, VA. Several sons & daughters lived in and around New Kent County. Still trying to piece everything together.
January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #21748Hello! While I have been told that anyone whose ancestors arrived in 17th Century Virginia probably is sure to have some NA ancestry, I also believe that there is more recent mingling in some of the AL Meltons. This based on features and coloring of some relatives and Alabama history itself: http://www.co.cullman.al.us/history3.htm
Scroll to “The Black Warrior’s Path” to read about John Melton and Melton’s Bluff.
January 8, 2006 at 6:24 pm #34913I made the same observation about Rush/Rash/Rasha. Any info or help on how you made leap from Rasha to “He’s James R. Melton.”
and then he lineage to–
His parents are on the 1850 Randolph Co., Ala census:
Michael Melton, b.abt. 1780 Va (or Orange Co., NC? )
and Rachael (Rush? ), b.abt. 1780 SC, d. 1860 Randolph Co., Ala.
thanks.
