I am moving some Moore info. over to this forum:
Brenda, I have a brickwall with my mother’s ggggrandmother, Barbara or Barbary Moore. She married Charles Honeyman in Hampshire WV about 1785. Also lived in Hardy Co before moving to Miami County in old age to live with son Michael. Any insights appreciated.

You got back further on your Moores than me! Thomas Moore, father of my Grandma Belle Moore Steele is where I am stuck!!!! He died in 1925 and the Steeles did not keep up with the family. My grandma died in 1964, so I have almost no info. to work with. I did find his grave on a hillside overlooking Devon, at the mouth of Beech Creek and I know he worked for the N & W railroad there. I did find his draft registration card that said he was born in Floyd Co., KY in 1888, leaving me to suspect that he may be a son Thomas of Calvin & Seatle Moore who was born in Floyd Co. in 1888. Can’t find a death certificate for some reason, so at this point this is just a speculation. This Floyd County Moore family can be traced back to Surry Co. NC during the RW., then Orange Co. in 1750’s. Before that, I don’t know.
I am not familiar with the Moores in Hampshire County, but I remember from Cecil O’Dell’s book on OLD FREDERICK that there was a William Moore from Prince Georges County, MD that moved into Orange Co. VA [Fairfax Grant] maybe by 1736? I think there is a Reily Moore, and a Joseph….Try looking in Orange Co., Old Frederick, and Hampshire. There are some Moore land grants on line at LVA, too, in these counties. Hampshire would have been Orange & Frederick early on.
I have this:
Orange Co. VA Order Book One 1734- 1739 at court on Tues the 20th of July 1736 John Smith, Wm. Moore, & John Daniels “made oath in open court that they were immediately imported into this Colony from Great Brittain or Ireland…” They were proving their rights for land, which they then assigned to a Robert Slaughter Gent.
A Riley Moore died in Frederick Co. Va, will proved 1 July 1760. He names wife Sarah, sons Reuben & James, other children not named…
There are a few other Moores.. I don’t have any notes on a Barbary…women are always the hardest!!!
Here’s a few grants from LVA:
Moore, William.

March 4, 2006 at 5:48 am #19580Need a death certificate and marriage certificate on Thomas Moore to verify parents and can’t find them!
Here is what I have to date on MY Thomas Moore that I think MAY be the son of Calvin & Seatle Moore.
THOMAS MOORE 1888 – 1925
THOMAS2 MOORE (UNKNOWN1) was born between 1883 – 1888 in Floyd County, Kentucky , and died June 10, 1925. He married LAURA SHORTRIDGE about 1907, daughter of BENJAMIN SHORTRIDGE and ELIZABETH “BETTIE”. Laura was born about 1878, and died after 1930.
Notes for THOMAS MOORE:
1910:
Tom and Laura (Shortridge)Moore with infant daughter Belle can be found in the 1910 US Federal Census for McDowell Co. WV in the Sandy River District, Panther Precinct No. 4, District 94, Sheet No. 10A, enumerated May 6, 1910 by Burrell Morgan in dwelling # 181, family # 183. The surname is, as in 1920, spelled MOOR. Thomas Moor, head, male, white, 23 , married once for three years, b. KY, both parents b. KY, working in a coal mine. Laura Moor is listed as wife, female, white, 27, married 1 time for 3 years, and [oddly] 1 birth, 1 child living. On this document she is reported as having been born in West Virginia, her father in Kentucky, and her mother in Virginia. Daughter Belle is a white female, age 1, b. WV, fa. b. KY, and mo. b. WV. This is the last household on this page which contains a number of Roberts families. [Image 19 of 24 Ancestry.com]. If the
information in this census is correct, Tom and Laura were married in 1907. Perhaps their marriage record is located in McDowell County. [Series: T624,
Roll: 687, Part: 1, Page: 104A, Year: 1910]
1916:
About June, 1916 Thomas Moore registered for the draft board in Mingo
County, WV:
Thomas Moore
City: Not Stated
County: Mingo
State: West Virginia
Birthplace: Kentucky; United States of America
Birth Date: Feb 1888
Race: Caucasian
Roll: 1992862
Ancestry. com image
On this registration Thomas’ birth date is listed as February 1888 in Floyd County, KY. He is 28 years old and living in O’Keefe, WV. His race is listed as caucasion. His employer is the N & W Railroad Co. in Devon, WV.
He lists as dependents a wife and one child. He is described as medium height and stature with black hair and black eyes. B. D. Cisco registered him in June, but unfortunately did not include the year when he signed.
This record is significant because it gives a date of 1888 rather than 1883 for Tom’s birth, opening up several possibilities for matching more closely Thomas Moore individuals in the 1900 census of Floyd County, KY and of McDowell County, WV. To date, I have been unable to find a Thomas Moore
born in 1883. The draft card is also important because in narrows the geographical area to be searched down to Floyd County, KY.
1920:
Tom and Laura Moore and daughter Belle were living in Devon, Mingo County, WV at the time of the 1920 census. 1920 US Federal Census, Mingo County, WV, Magnolia Magisterial
District, Devon Precinct, 20 & 21 June 1920. Dwelling # 149, family # 156, THOMAS MOOR [MOORE], head, renter, male, white, 34 , married, can read and write, born KY, parents b. KY, section foreman, railroad; LAURA, wife, white female, 37 , cannot read or write, b. VA, parents b. VA; BELL, daughter, white female, 10, can
read and write, b. WV, fa. b. KY, mo. b. VA.
1920: Dwelling # 147, family #154 appears to be another Moore Household, but the image is difficult to read. Tipper [?] Moore, head, renter, male, white, 41, with BELL, wife, 40. Mr. Moore was b. KY; Bell WV. It looks like he is a civil engineer at a coal company. They both can read and write. Due to the proximity, these Moores may be related to Thomas Moore. In the 1910 census [Image 1 of 56 Ancestry.com District 151 of
Magnolia, Mingo Co., WV] this individual is clearly CHIPPER MOORE, age 44, head, white male married once for 13 years, b. KY with both parents b. KY, engineer on the rail road. His wife is Belle, age 40, white female married once for 13 years , b. WV.both parents b.WV. This is clearly the same family, but they appear to be approximately
the same ages in 1910 and 1920! They age a bit by 1930 [see below].
1925:
According to his gravestone, Thomas Moore died in 1925. I contacted the West Virginia Bureau of Vital Statistics and they were unable to locate a death certificate. There is no death certificate on line for him at the West Virginia Archives.
1926:
Laura Moore must have remarried farily soon after Tom’s death because “Laura Layne” is listed as Belle’s mother on Belle and Harry’s marriage bond of June 8, 1926 (Pike Co., KY). Thomas Moore is named as Belle’s father.
1930:
Laura Layne is on the 1930 Mingo Co., WV Census in the Magnolia Magisterial District, District 12 [ District 12 of Magnolia contained Lick Fork and Thacker] in dwelling # 129, family # 129 as “Nora” Lane, wife of Willburn Lane. She is listed as a white, married female, wife of head of household, born VA, both parents born VA, age 46 , who was age 15 when she first married. She could not read or write. Willburn Lane is listed as the head of the household, white male, married,
age 35, and age 20 when he was first married. He is a renter with a value of $8 who could read and write, born KY, both parents born KY, who was a section foreman for a steam railroad. Living in the home with “Nora” and Willburn are Laura’s children, noted as step children of the head of household Willburn Lane, Maude Dale, age 28 and married, first married at 15,b. VA, both parents b. VA, who could read and write, and Rell Shortridge,
age 22, single, b. VA, both parents b. VA, who could also read and write.
The William and Kelsia Lane family, # 127, is close by, as are several Cline families and the Dock Collins family. [1930 US Federal Census, Mingo Co., VA, Magnolia Magisterial District, District 10, p.218, Sheet 8A, Image # 15
of 28, Ancestry.com, source of Image: Year, 1930; Census Place, Magnolia; Mingo, West Virginia; Roll 2547;
Page ; Enumeration District 12; Image: 440.0.] Laura’s death appears to have occurred after April 5, 1930 when the home was enumerated. Historically, the surname Lane is most often spelled Layne in the area. Belle’s daughters say their Grandma Laura died of cancer before they were born, in the early 1930’s. She was certainly dead by my birth in 1954.
In the 1930 Census, the voting precincts of Devon and Meador were contained in District 10 of Magnolia Magisterial District 12 of Mingo County, WV. Tom and Laura’s daughter and son-in-law, Belle and Harry Steele are living in dwelling # 87, family # 91, p 745, Sheet 5B, enumerated by Young Kennedy on April 16, 1930 [Image 10 of 25 Ancestry.com]. Harry and Belle are 21 years old, first married at age 16. Harry is a coal miner, renter, value $3, born in WV, both parents born in WV. Belle was listed as
having been born in WV, her father born in Kentucky, and her mother born in Virginia. Children in the home in 1930 were Thomas E., age 3; Harry, Jr., age 2; and John L., age 8/12.
In the 1930 census of Magnolia Township, District 12 [ Lick Fork and Thacker] Mingo County, WV there is in dwelling # 159 a Richard M. Moore, head and renter, age 42, married, b. KY, both parents b. KY, foreman, coal mine. Wife, Mary J., age 59, b. WV, both parents b. WV, with son Elmo, 15, b. WV. There are two more Moore homes in this District 12 of Magnolia.
In District 10 [Devon and Meador], is the dwelling [Devon] of Tipper Moore, age 56, and wife Belle, 59. Tipper was b. in KY; Belle in WV.

March 4, 2006 at 5:48 am #19605Brenda,
Calvin Moore’s son Thomas appears to still be living in Floyd County in 1910 and 1920 with wife Kizzie/Keziah.
Calvin’s mother appears to be Rachael Lemonds/Lemons, m’d John Moore on 13 Jan 1826 Rockingham Co., NC – both FPC living next to the Gibson and Going families.
Bill
March 4, 2006 at 5:48 am #19777Bill,
This period is rough without any 1890 census and not being able to find a death or marriage certificate…but here’s what I have found since your post.
I think there are several Moore families who are interrelated using a lot of the same names, and perhaps some Moores who are not related. In additon to Floyd Co., I am looking in Pike, Martin, & Lawrence Counties, KY and Mingo & McDowell, WV.
The Thomas that you noted who is married to Kizzie was born July 15, 1881 in Floyd County, KY according to HIS WWI draft registration card. This doesn’t match the census info. on Calvin’s son Thomas, but who knows when census info. is right!!!! “Kisey”, is noted on his card as his nearest relative. This Thomas is still alive and living in Floyd during the 1930 census with his daughter Della, and her husband Andy Blankenship as “father-in-law”. My Thomas died in 1925.
Now, if perhaps this Thomas who married Kizzie is not the Thomas born 1888, son of Calvin that I suspect is my Thomas Moore, I need to find out who his father is to further eliminate him. Haven’t done that yet, too much going on here.
There are a couple of other Thomas Moores, but none of them look like a match for me other than the Thomas b. 1888, son of Calvin so far……The surname Moore is just about like Smith in this area!
This one is a hard one for me so I am checking my reasoning with you.
What do you think based on the draft registration info.???
Brenda
March 4, 2006 at 5:48 am #19781Brenda,
I think we need to dig around some more. I’ll see what else I can find.
Bill
March 4, 2006 at 5:48 am #19917I have Moore’s from NC as well. Before that Nansemond County VA. In this Moore line there is a dominant family trait I have seen it in Moore’s in the mid 1800’s and we still have it today. It is what the doctors have called lazy eye. In fact though one eye is smaller than the other. My Mom has it and i do to a smaller degree….Do any of you other Moore descendents have this?
