I was hoping someone might be of assist and shed some light on my lost trail. I am trying to determine which tribe/band of the Blackfoot resided within KY (perhaps Green Co. area or vicinity). I am not at all sure that our Blackfoot were Plains Indians. My Great Great Grandmother (Born Abt.1854) was Full-Blackfoot according to Family Lore. She was born in KY, as were her parents from what I have found. There is rumor that the family may of came down from Canada at some point, but this maybe confused with the other branch of the family. All traces of them are just in KY, never any sign of them in MT or Canada. It was stressed by by Grandmother BlackFOOT, never Blackfeet when referring to the Indian lineage within her family. Surnames that I can follow at this point are male Powell (various spellings) and female Hancock/Handcock. The Blackfoot is on the Hancock side, as most of the family history has been lost, Many regards for any assist here, 2PI
Wow, 2PI, I did a search for Hancock on this forum and hit the jackpot for that surname.
Many people on this forum have the same Blackfoot story, no connection with the western group. I do. While my folks took the PA to OH route, I am sure I saw Green county (one of my surnames is Green), KY before on this forum. I suggest that you also search this forum (there is a search link towards the top right-hand side of the page) and read those threads that pop up and also post your information on the genealogy thread. Bill might find you a few cousins.

I wonder if Hancock is a variant on Haithcock, which is a really well researched Saponi/Blackfoot name. Rick Haithcock’s literally compiled books on the subject. He also notes Powell as a name occuring among SE Indian families.
Thank you! I will do a search on this/these forums for the Surnames. It was just of late that I was able to come up and find the name of Hancock/Handcock in records. (census & LDS) I have a Samuel Powell (Samuel H. Powell/Powel b. KY Abt. 1851 and married 1 July 1874 to a Angentte/Jennetta (Nettie)Hancock/Handcock in Green Co.) SHe was b. Abt. 1854. There were several children from this union, one being my my Great Grandmother Ethel Powell Abt. 1886. I know all the records I come across on her indicate she was born in KY. Her daughter, Juanita always stated that her mother’s mother was full Blackfoot. Juanita…my Grandmother later travel to Georgia and started her family. This is what gave me a small clue to question being related to the plains Blackfoot. I thank you again for your assistance. Regards, 2PI
Haithcock could well be a variation of Hancock/Handcock. I would not be surprised, if it turns out that way.
I am going by census at this point. From my reseach over the past 30 years on my family branches I have learned that “Census Takers” were not allowed to ask how to spell names. So they would write it down as it sounded to them.
