The Blackfeet in Montana and Canada, as I understand it, are “siksika”, and there are Blackfoot people who are part of the Lakota people living in South Dakota on the Cheyenne River reservation, who are known as “sihasapa”. I’m thinking that they may be a remnant of the eastern Sioux people, the sissihapa (sp?) – the names seem very similar.
My ancestors are from Virginia and Tennessee, migrating to Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas. I have done some reading on the melungeon, and I know that I have some of the physical characteristics. The only information I have that links me to Native people is a family story that my greatgrandmother (from TN) was 1/4 Indian. I have not been able to find any info about this.
I am researching the names of Tipton, Bowers, Lacy, Nave, and Eaton from TN/NC – also I have a maternal grandmother whose history is mostly unknown as she died when my mother was 5. Her name is Hinnant, and I think there are some Cherokee families by this name.
It’s interesting that I lived in Virginia most of my life, and a few years before I left I affiliated with Grandmother Twila Nitche’s Wolf Clan teaching lodge. The elders, one of which was Ted Williams, a Tuscarora in Asheville, NC, gave me my Indian name in the Tuscarora language. My user name for this forum is the Lakota derivation of that name.
If any of the forum readers have any information or guidance for my research, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
S.
August 30, 2006 at 8:15 pm #22833Welcome, Sapaweya. Yes, I’ve been thinking the same thing for awhile now, as have many here at this forum. We have an article summarizing most of our research on this at http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm. How did you come to this idea?
I don’t recognize your surnames, but use the search button in the upper right to see if they’ve come up here before.
