There is a new type of DNA test that is coming out soon. If you wish to sign up to receive information on this, here is the link: http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/family-finder.aspx

March 10, 2010 at 3:49 pm #34843Techteach, do you understand how this works?
I imagine I’m 5th cousins with just about everybody in McDowell County, WV, and a good chunk of the people in Saponitown. What an enormous amount of information to deal with. My mind is boggled.
Should be interesting.
March 10, 2010 at 3:49 pm #34844Are you compiling a Christmas card mailing list?
March 10, 2010 at 3:49 pm #34845That is just for area families?
March 10, 2010 at 3:49 pm #34847Hee hee!
maybe a Christmas/kwanzaa/solstice/chanukah/ramadan/boxing Day list.
March 10, 2010 at 3:49 pm #34848No, no, I don’t think so. I was trying to imagine what happens when people who are related lots of different ways try to figure out the results. Sounds like you would need to do a lot more traditional genealogy to understand it. Still, pretty neat.
March 10, 2010 at 3:49 pm #34849If I understand how it works, you will receive a percentage of how much your DNA matches your cousins with an estimate of how closely related they are, i.e. 4th cousin. People will be asked to provide email addresses and then you can contact each other to compare genealogies.
This looks at that part of the DNA, if I understand correctly, that will tell you if you have any different ethnic groups in your ancestry, although FTDNA seems not to be providing this feature.
I see this as a great opportunity, if enough people participate, to break through those barriers that we all have, i.e. my Andrew Huston and Nancy Agnes McLane whose respective parents are unknown.
When available, I am going to see if my mother would take the test, as she is one generation closer to both of these individuals.
I read somewhere that the cost would be 250.00, but I do not know if the source was reliable or not.
