December 8, 2005 at 5:53 am #18043Hi Bonnie,
Per the 1930 & 1920 Chilton Co., 1910 Coosa Co, Ala Census records, Joseph Peters’ full name is William Joseph Peters.
In 1880 Tallapoosa Co., Ala, he’s 19 and living with his brother James B. Peters, b.abt. 1858. On the 1870 Tallapoosa census, he and James are in the household of Anna, 40, whose name looks kinda-like “Emma”, but these are the same family members as in Luke & Ann Peters’ household in 1860, so “Emma” looks like a census taker’s error.
Per the 1860 Tallapoosa Co., Ala Census, William Joseph’s father is Luke R. Peters, b. abt. 1829 in Georgia (Walton Co), d. before 1870, at least he isn’t in this household in 1870.
Their youngest child was born about 1864 and Ann is the head of household in 1870. Luke R. Peters was a Sargent in Company C., 47th Alabama Infantry, CSA, during the Civil War, implying he may have died during that war, but I haven’t found a casualty list for this unit in order to verify that yet.
William Joseph Peters was pretty young at this time and this is probably the reason there was some confusion in his later family as to where his parents were born.
Joseph’s mother is listed as Ann, b. abt. 1831 Florida, per those 1850 & 1860 census and there is a George W. SMITH, b.abt. 1836 Florida, a teacher, living with them in 1850. Ann is “Clara” on the 1850 Tallapoosa Co census. Annie/Ann Peters was living with her dau Susan/Susanna Winslett in 1880 and 1900 Tallapoosa Co., Ala.
a “One World Tree” lists Luke R. Peters m’d Clary Ann SMITH on on 25 July 1850 in Tallapoosa County, but has no info on her parents.
That tree lists Luke’s parents as William Moses Peters, b. 1797 Oglethorpe Co., Ga; d. 1880 Tallapoosa Co., Ala, who m’d 15 May 1820 Clarke Co., Ga, Gracey POWELL, b. 2 Sep 1801 Wake Co., NC, d. 1860 Tallapoosa Co., Ala.
They lived next door to Luke and Clara Peters on the 1850 Tallapoosa Co., Ala census.
William Moses Peters’ parents per tree:
Jesse Sanford Peters, b. 1753 Craven Co., NC, d. 1839 Carroll Co., Ga; and Martha, b. 1760 NC?, d. 1825 Walton Co., Ga.
Martha is listed a Martha Peters but it’s unclear if that was her maiden name or her married name.
That is all the info for the Peters on that tree.
Gracey POWELL’s parents:
Moses Powell, b. 1769 Wake Co., NC, d. 22 Dec 1846 Newton Co., Ga, m’d abt. 1794 Wake Co, Nancy POPE, b. 2 Jul 1775 Wake Co., NC, d. 1855 Fulton Co., Ga. d/o William, b. 1733 NC, d. 1818 Wake Co., NC and Ann Elizabeth Woodard, b. 1745 NC, d. 1818 ? , NC.
This Powell line has a ton of info, probably due to the early Powell, POPE, GARNER, JOYNER, MURRELL, WATERS, HEARN, and maybe the LAWRENCE and BOAZMAN lines being Quakers.
