Hello all.. this is my first post so bare with me ok? I am researching my cherokee ancestors.. names… Fly, Sooter, Eden, Roden, Summers, Bolin. Well thats all I can think of right now…
Elisha Fly b.Abt. 1748 in Northhamton, N.C. He was known to be a mountain man and married a Indian maiden named Margaret(cherokee) she was born Abt. 1750 in the Piedmont Area of NC. They were married Abt. 1766.
James Roden b.jan1819 in Giles Co. Tn. D.May 1899 in Barry Co. MO married Nancy Matilda Fly (cherokee) B.1826 in Carroll Co.Tn. D. 1850. They were married abt.1841 in Barry Co. Mo.
Am I boring you all yet?????:p
Thats all I can remember off the top of my head.. as I have been working on the Indian connection non-stop for about 2 weeks now… My mind is cluttered with names, dates, etc… now all I have to do is try and sort them all out.. I also very new to tracing the “Indian” Ancestors, so any help is appreicated.
Oh, one more thing.. I have been told that I have some ancestors that are on the roll of the dawes commision,, I have been looking but wow!! Alot of names to go thru…
Back on Aug.11,1896 five chldren of Greenberry and Martha Fly Sooter filed a suit against the Cherokee Nation for citizenship. It was rejected on Aug,29,1896. The children that filed were..Elisha H. Sooter,Greenberry Sooter,Albert F Sooter, Martin V Sooter, and Edward P. Sooter.
Here is the website you can read it all.. (if your interested) Ok thats enough for now I think. Dont you?? LOL! I will try and get my brain together and post more… Any help or advice, or anything you are willing to do to help me in my quest will be greatly appreciated..

If you’ve followed your family lines back to that Fly family I’m uncertain of what help you’re looking for.
…. to prove they were Cherokee? They and others thought so.
Let me know.

February 11, 2007 at 6:37 pm #24857Hello Bill,
Thank you for responding.. Yes I have traced them back, but I still dont know how to prove any of this info… I am going by word of mouth mostly.I have some documents on the fly family, but nothing to prove their Indian heritage. I am hoping that this board can lead me in the right direction as how to prove this… I have searched most of the dawes rolls, but havent finished yet.. By word of mouth some family members have said some of the Fly’s were there, but I have yet to find them…
Also, can anyone help me as to the reasons why some people were on the dawes rolls and then omitted, or taken off them?
Anyway, hopes this explains my quest a little more.
Kathy
February 11, 2007 at 6:37 pm #24864The letter from Chief John Ross supporting their application is strong evidence they were Cherokee.
They appear to have been denied membership because they were not living “within the nation” at the time of, nor after, the removal, which is why they aren’t on any of the Rolls referred to in the “demurral” letter –
“Living in the Community” is part of the criteria for membership.
They were in
1830 Carroll Co., Tenn Census
1840 Barry Co., Mo Census
1850 Barry Co., Mo and some in 1850 Benton Co., Ark Census.
….
