HI everyone,
I originally posted this on the History forum and thought that I would post it here also. I was doing some research on my Kelly side of the family and came across this on Freeafricanamericans.com: “Paul1 Bunch, born perhaps 1675, received a patent for 265 acres in North Carolina on the south side of the Roanoke River joining Quankey Pocosin and Gideon Gibson on 1 January 1725, and he bought a further 300 acres joining this land [Halifax DB 8:283]. His Chowan County will was written on 16 November 1726 and probated on 10 March 1726/7 [SS 876, 3:138-9]. He left his land and eight slaves to his son John and to Fortune Holdbee and her daughters Keziah and Jemima. John2 Bunch, born say 1692, owned land adjoining Gideon Gibson‘s land, and he probably named his son Gideon for him. He sold the land that “my father Paul Bunch bought of James Kelly on Occaneche” on 28 August 1728 and purchased 100 acres in Bertie County on the south side of the Roanoke River near Tuckahoe Marsh on 12 May 1729. The James Kelly mentioned in the text is my 6th Grt Grandfather. The question I have is the “Occaneche” mentioned in the text, is this a creek or small river in this area that runs into the Roanoke River? I have look on maps and search on the web for this answer and have not had any luck. I live in Georgia and it’s hard to find some of the answers I need. If anyone could help me with this answer, I would be very thankful. Thanks.
I don’t know if it is a creek or river, but I do believe there was an Occeneechi Trail that was the “main” trading thoroughfare through Hillsboro, NC at one time.

The occaneche mentioned in the text, I believe was in the Halifax and Bertie County Area but I not sure. I know that my Kelly side of the Family, my 5th and 6th Grt Grandfathers, lived in the Halifax and Edgecombe areas from the early to Mid 1700’s. I don’t think they ever lived in the Hillsborough area, but I’m not positive. Mt 5th Grt Grandfather married an Evans in the Halifax/Edgecombe area, but I do not know her first name. My 4th Grt Grandfather William was a R.S. in N.C. and I believe the Family migrated down from the Edgecombe area to the Blanden, Robeson Co N.C. and the Cheraws District S.C. Area. I know that William married a woman named Elizabeth in the Cheraws District after the Revolutionary War. I have look on regular maps and topo maps and still can’t find this Occaneche. I am looking for historic maps to hopefully locate it. Thanks again.
I know this was a old post but I am curious if your Evans were near Falling Run in northern Edgecombe County? This is near present day Battleboro.

🙂 Hi Linda, I don’t think they were around the Battleboro area. I believe they were in the area in between the Roanoke and Meherrin Rivers. I have found on some Historic maps of the area that there was an area called Occaneechey Neck and I believe this is where my Evans and Kelly family lived. It looks like on the map in lies in between the Roanoke River and a Creek called Wheelers Mill Creek. It was located in old historic Bertie County, N.C. I have recently found out that the Evans Surname is found in the Southern Band of Tuscarora but I am not sure if there is a connection. Do you have any information on the Evans family in these areas? Any info you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
