Is it true that the Saponi went to Pilot Mountain, which they called Jomeoke, to commune with raven spirits? Jomeoke is reported to mean the home of thunder or the home of the thunder beings.
I haven’t seen anything to that effect in any source material. It would have been possible, of course, for some of the Saura people to have used the Mountain for ceremonial use, but to my knowledge, it was never recorded. The Saura hung on until contact times, but little has been recorded about their religion or culture. What we know comes mainly from archaeological studies of the area.

This link will take you to some very beutiful pictures of Pilot Mountain. I am wondering about the other mountains in this area as well. In one photo they capture in the background Saratown Mountain and Hanging Rock. Is Hanging Rock a mountain?
Also I am wondering what the other further distant peak is?
I have had a reoccuring dream about 4 mountains. Some time ago I painted a canvas with acrilic. The view was at night time and the silouett was a mesa looking mountain. Several of my friends used to make fun of me over it because they said it looked like Devil’s Mesa out in Arizona. I always said no that it wasn’t the same. I threw it out after someone told me I had been watching Close Encounters or something. Then I found this mountain photo. Pilot Mountain was the one I painted.
Forest you said that some archeology had been done on the Sara/Cheraw do you know where I may find that information? Also where is Pilot Mountain in relation to New River and Ashe and Wilkes Counties?
This is from the Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800 – showing that Shorten Smith owned 112 acres in 1785, Sept. 10. South side of Pilot Mountain. Trying to tell if this is the same Pilot Mountain near Mt Airy – or one actually in VA. A description of the book says it includes land in what is now WV and KY, but didn’t see anything about NC.
Also trying to see if Shorten Smith 1762-Dec 28 1836 could be the father of our Francis M Smith 1781-1865. Francis claimed birthplace of WV on later censuses. Shorten passed in Tazewell County VA.
Anyone know what area specifically is referenced here?
