HI everyone
I have not posted for awhile, but thought it was time to do so.
I am Deb whose mom is from MEcklenberg.
Names include Harris, Wood, Davis, and a couple of others (have to drag out a coupleo f geneology books)
Family has done research in different areas of family to later 1700s or early 1800s.
There are some blanks, could fill them. Sometimes, I feel as that goign back to teh fort early 1700s is “too far back” but then I see all of you….and get inspired again.
A couple of friends of mine who are Native feel that I do have some ancestry and its worth checking out.
I guess with the way history went with division of peoples (grrr)
if anyone did have anything other than European, they kept it quiet. Sigh. So, I am the one after 300 years who is doing the digging….am I nuts? I don’tthink so, and would like to thank you all for having this group and accepting me.
I hope to do some matching up of names in the next few months but am not able to do so at moment. (due to time)
I hope to this summer perhaps.
but the family has been Mecklenberg and Lunenberg (with some land grants showing but during Revolution and earlier…blanks…so I am the one who is turning over the rocks)
forever.
So, thanks for helping me find stuff out.

June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15143I would like to hear more about the land grants before and durring the Revolution. My G G G G Grandpa was in Libby Prison as a captured soldier, toward the end of the war, he is one of my gpas that married native women & was also from Ohio so as you know South Eastern Virginia is a long walk back to Ohio, been curious to know where he stopped along the way. Oh and he was married after he returned from the war. I am thinking he picked up his bride somewhere along the way, while making friends (so to speak)
June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15154Hi there Bill
Thanks for welcoming me back.
I hope to come across more info later this summer as well as visit the area later in July or Aug.

June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15164Well I bring up the revolution because I think for some of us, that it could play a factor in why some of us ended up in the North. They were interesting times, so many possibilities.
June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15175The revolution was interesting times as was just before with Tuscarora war etc. (need to do more research on that)
people ended up all over the place.
My folks…well they would have just basically stayed put!
My mom was the one who moved up here…but they were there forever (Meck and Lun) counties.
So, see what teh rocks eventually turn over.
Also I am interested in people “assimilating”or blending in, especially under laws of the day (well up til recent 🙁 ).
So, who knows.
Well, hopefully when I can get some more research done then I can have some moreanswers re just early family history in general.
Nice to talkto folkshere and exchange info.
I hope to be down in August.

As far as blending in, I think that may have been more of an issue for southern tribal people because of slavery and predudices if you were indian it was somewhat better to go as “white” than to be known as indian. And if you were a darker skin indian than you went as “colored”. My grandfather (Tuscaroran) attended college (I am recently finding this out) as white, but when they found out that he was not they made him leave the school and he had to attend a black college because he was indian and there was no other schools that would except him. He of course looked “white” by their standards in the early 1900’s. His father was listed in the census as Mulatto because he did look indian to the census taker who didn’t have clear instruction on what to list an indian that was not on the indian census and was not living on a reservation or in an indian village. Sometimes I wish my family had stayed with our people and it would not have been such a long journey for me to find out who I am, but Grandfather has giving knowledge and wisdom that proves beyond a shadow 200 years later that I am Native American…..
Jade:) 🙂
June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15350HI there
Thanks for responding (Im alittle slow at getting back 🙂 )
Yes, definitely with the issue of blending in due to treatment, history etc.
Thank you for your story! That is very interesting! I also LOVE your statement about 200 years later.
Thank you all here…. 🙂

June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15351Hi Deb,
A little off the Subject here, but I was just up your way last weekend. There was a small traditional pow wow over at the Chippewa of the Thames Rez over in Muncey, I have to say they were the NICEST group of Brothers and Sisters up there next to my Brothers and Sisters on this board of corse!
Do you ever get to make it over there to any Pow Wows? they are also right next to the Onieda of the Thames and Delaware-Munsee Rez’s, I know they have some big Pow Wows coming up that are advertised on the Gathering of Nation Website. I thought you might be interested, in events up in your neck of the woods, actually I am just across the Windsor bridge! So if you want to come over Michigan way I can let you know about events in the area! or if you just want to talk you can email me from my profile thingy.
Just a lil History, at one time the Delaware were in the Ohio Valley at one time and some of them moved to the Ontario way, it’s a small community, but you might be able to talk to them about the tribes moving up there, you know the Why, WHere, Who and if there are others that went with them.
June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15406Hi Christina:
Thanks for your response. 🙂
You are close, just over the border…I am near Toronto…so a few hours away.
Sounds like you had a nice time in Chippewa. I’ve never been there, I know people that have visited there.
There are alot of powwows going on all over…6 Nations has a big one in July but I have not been to it for a few years. (remember giong as a kid) Also there is a (commercial like but biggest in Canada) powwow in November at Skydomein Toronto.
(it’s a couple of days…people come fromall over)
Yes, it would be nice to meet up since we really are not that far away. 🙂 Or well hey, email is good too. 🙂
I do know people over on your side of teh border in Michigan as well.
yes, alot of people ended up along what is now the 401…Delaware and alot of people (including Tutelos/Saponis! were adopted by Cayugas at 6 Nations)
There is Tutelo Heights, a place, etc. so there is some information left. Also Linda posted about a book that can be ordered from Iroqrafts at 6 Nations…re songs etc.
Yes, it would be nice to keep in touch. 🙂
Of course, anyone else reading this….of course with all of you too1!! (I am speaking as that we are closer in geography)
I hope to come down end of July to VA.
June 6, 2005 at 11:37 am #15423I Love Toronto whata great city!!!
I dont know if we will be back to Ontario any time soon unless Creator Blesses me with alot of money to go shopping at IKEA, lol
However when were Muncey, they invited us back to sing at their other Pow Wow’s, We are going to have to invest in some pass ports though, Boarder crossing is becoming more strict and I heard the U.S. just uped the cost of pass ports by $100.00 dollars, I guess they are not going to allow carrying your birth certificate anymore.
I dont know if your are busy next weekend but there is a Pow Wow over on Sugar Island just over there by Sault St Marie, our drum will be there but Juan and I wont be able to go, due to scheduling conflicts. It is a really nice traditional Pow Wow if you have a free weekend to hop over there. You take a Car ferry over to Sugar Island, it’s pretty cool, it’s a really short ferry ride not long.
