Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
One of my ancestors was Richard Austin Sr. born ca 1700. He and his brother John Sr. came to the Lunenburg area of VA together.
According to Richard Haithcock’s book “Catawba Confederacy, Tutelo, Saponi, Nahyssan and Monacan Tribal History Includes Tuscarora and Nottaway Tribal Histories”, on August 19, 1771, Governer William Bull commissioned John Austin to be Captain of a company of Catawbas. There are other mentions in his book and in court records of John Austin Sr. and Jr. in the company of Saponi Indians and John’s children identified as Mullato.
I believe that my ancestor, Richard Austin also married a Saponi woman. Since Richard was evidently not involved with the politics of the day regarding Indians, his name is not mentioned in court records that I know of. However, in Richard Haithcock’s book “Virginia Indian Census Vol. 2, he has a list called the “Historical Saponi List” and it mentions John Austin, John Austin Jr. and Richard Austin. I believe this Richard to be my ancestor as he is not identified as John’s son. I may be wrong.
It seems to me that at one time, I heard of a court document where one of John Austin Sr.’s sons said that their cousin Thomas/Tom was also Saponi. Does anyone have that document or know where I can find it? There is quite a bit of information about John Sr. but I’m grasping at straws where Richard is concerned.
A couple of people over the past years have told me that Richard’s wife was Elizabeth Rice.
Does anyone have information about her or have another name for his wife?
Thanks,
Arroyah
