February 21, 2007 at 5:49 am #25014Hi, Pamela,
Tupelo is in Lee Co., Ms, and the other counties referenced below are counties bordering Lee Co., where they lived at various times.
From the 1930 Lee Co., Ms Census; ED25 Beat 5; 10 April; Sheet 5B; Household 103:
RIDINGS, Curtis; farmer, m, W, 20, m’d @ 18; Ms, Ms, Ms.
……….., Mertis; wife, f, W, 17, m’d @ 15; Ms, Ms. Ms.
……….., Joe H.; son, m, W, 1; Ms, Ms, Ms.
Murtis Pitts parents:
George W. Pitts, b.abt. 1891 Ms &
Eulah (last name not yet known), b.abt. 1893 Ms.
The census lists both of their parents as also b. Ms.
I’d guess that “Myrtis” (Murtis/Mertis) was born in Pontotoc or Monroe Counties, both next door to Lee Co (Tupelo). I haven’t found either of her parents families before 1920 but will take another look.
1920 Pontotoc Co., Ms Census; ED98 Beat 1; 10 Jan; Sheet 7 (B); Household 137:
PITTS, George W., farmer, m, W, 29, Ms, Ms, Ms.
…….., Eulah; wife, f, W, 27, Ms, Ms, Ms.
…….., MYRTIS; dau, f, W, 8, Ms.
…….., Sybel; dau, f, W, 7, Ms.
…….., George Jr; dau, son, m, W, 1, Ms.
…………………………………………………………..
The Ridings moved around the area, Itawamba, Pontotoc, Monroe counties, etc., with most of them arriving in Monroe Co. from Tennessee around 1848, and the oldest Ridings were from NC, apparently from the Rutherford-Wilkes-Surry county area, according to census records. Marriage record indexes for some of these Ms counties are not online so many of the brides’s names are “unknown” .
Curtis’s father’s name was Ollie, b.abt. July 1880, probably in Itawamba Co.
His mother was Bettie (probably Elizabeth), last name not found yet, who died between 1913 and 1920 in Itawamba Co., and by 1930 Ollie was remarried to “Chattie” (or Hattie) who was previously married to a SPRADLING based on the last names of her children.
Ollie’s parents were William (middle name may be Wilson) Ridings and Martha A. (last name may be PORTER) according to the 1900 census, but I think Martha may be William’s 2nd wife, and Ollie’s step-mother, based on earlier census records, but I’m still unraveling that.
1930 Itawamba Co., Ms Census; ED8 Beat 3; 19 April; Sheet 12A & B; Household 257:
RIDINGS, Ollie; farmer, m, W, 50, m’d @ 27, Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Chattie; wife, f, W, 36, m’d @ 30, Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Carey; son, m, W, 22, Ms, Ms, Ms,
………., Maggie; dau, f, W, 17, Ms, Ms, Ms.
SPRADLING, Annie F.; Step-dau; f, W, 18, Ms, Ms, Ms.
………….., Charlie; Step-son; m, W, 16, Ms, Ms, Ms.
next door, household 258, is Ollie’s mother:
RIDINGS, Martha A; Head, no occup; f, W, 75, Widow, m’d @ 20, Ms, Ala, Ms.
………………………….
1920 Itawamba Co., Ms Census; ED17 Beat 3; 25 Feb; Sheet 15B; household 277:
RIDDINGS, Ollie; farmer, m, W, 40, Widowed; Ms, Ms, Ms.
…………, Carey; son, m, W, 12, Ms, Ms, Ms.
…………, Kuric (Curtis); son, m, W, 10, Ms, Ms, Ms.
…………, Maggie; dau, f, W, 7, Ms, Ms, Ms.
Next door to them was a Benjamin F. Riddings, 34, b.Ms, who is a cousin.
……………………..
1910 Itawamba Co., Ms Census; ED17 Bigby Fork Twp; 5 May; Sheet 23A:
Household 363:
RIDINGS, Wilson; farmer, m, W, 61, m’d 35 yrs; Ms, Tn, Ark.
………., Martha; wife, f, W, 54, 8 children-6 living; Ms, Al, Ms.
………., Clara; dau, 18, Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Porter; son, 14, Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Elmer; cousin, 1 yr 2 months old, Ms, Ms, Ms.
4 houses away at household 367:
RIDINGS, Ollie; farmer, m, W, 31, m’d 4 yrs, Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Bettie O. ; wife, f, W, 21, 2 children- 2 living; Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Cary; son, 3, Ms.
………., CURTIS; son, 9 months old, Ms.
3 more houses, at household 370, probably a brother or cousin of William’s:
RIDINGS, John; farmer, m, W, 52, Widowed; Ms, Tn, Tn.
………., Benjamin; son, m, W, 25, m’d 1 yr; Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., June (Jene?); Dau-in-law; f, W, 21, 1 child-1 living; Ms, Ms, Ms.
………., Clinton; Gran-son; m, W, 7 months old; Ms, Ms, Ms. (actually James C. )
1900 Itawamba Co., Ms Census; ED39 Beat 3; 7 June; Sheet 3A; Household 41:
RIDINGS, William; farmer, W, m, June 1849, 50, m’d 24 yrs, Ms, Tn, Ark.
………., Martha A. ; wife, W, f, Aug 1856, 44, m’d 24 yrs, Ms, Al, Ms.
………., OLLIE; son, July 1880, 20, Ms.
………., Barcie L. ; dau, Sept 1883, 16, Ms.

………., Clarie P. ; dau, Oct 1891, Ms.

I’m still unraveling ‘which’ William this is, so, more later
