Just a short note: I found a reference to the Robert Bolling Plantation, “on Sappony, in Prince George County, (VA)” on a reprint of old VA papers by Windley, Vol 1, p. 20. This Robert Bolling descends from Pocahontas. I thought the location of “Sappony” was very interesting – maybe that was the old river where that the Sappony lived on??
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34007This doesn’t not supprise me at all. I have been doing research in Pocahhontas and her extended family because I believe it connects to the Lewis and Clark Expedition out of Pittsburgh in 1803. The way I understand it, the Sappony lived near Pittsburgh.
If I can believe the cemetery records at Versailles Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Queen Alliquippa is related to Pocahontas and her sister Cleopatra. Sgt John Floyd and the Floyd family were well known to be decendents of Cleopatra.
The Randolph family of Thomas Jefferson is surly related to Pocahontas. Last is I believe Sacajawea was also related to Pocahontas. It has to do with the Randolphs and the well known Native American families living in and around Pittsburgh like Chief Logan and Chief Joseph Bryant and their extended families that connect to Sir William Johnson.

This is interesting research you are doing!
In my direct line, the Randolph’s are not descended from Pocahontas but I surely know that many are as the book, Pocahontas’ Descendants by Brown, Myers and Chappel includes several pages of Randolph descendants. My descendant of Pocahontas is the Red Bolling Line of VA as Mary Jefferson (TJ’s Sister) married John William Blair Bolling (direct descendant of Pocahontas) and their children’s line all descend from Pocahontas. However, Mary Jefferson’s mother was a Randolph and was not descended from Pocahontas – so some Randolph’s are descendants of Pocahontas and some are not.
Following are the Floyds enumerated as descendants of Pocahontas: Charles Harrison Floyd, Charles Sea Floyd, Mary Randolph Floyd Virginia Hening Floyd and Virginia Troup Harrison Floyd. You may already have these?
William B. and son William Bennett Johnson are included as descendants of Pocahontas. Is this the William Johnson you are referring to?
Keep up the good work as this is important and needs to be researched. To my knowledge, none of Pocahontas’ siblings have been documented as yet. Clydene
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34018Several issues about the placement of people buried at Versailles Cemetery in Pittsburgh tell me that there is a much bigger story about Pocahontas and King James then people are willing to admit. For one, King James commissioned Water Color paintings of the Powhatan family. If you look at the copies of the water colors in Jamestown, the pictures show the family having red hair.
Versailles Cemetery is in the exact location of Queen Alliquippa’s camp thanks to Map Maker Peter Jefferson marking the exact location on his Jefferson and Fry map.
The red hair is confirmed in a painting done by John Gadsby Chapman of the Baptism of Pocahontas in England. Her hair is dark red.
I talked to a descendent of Oliver Cromwell in England and he says Pocahontas is buried with Henry VII who was Henry VIII father. For sure Henry VIII married Ferndinand and Isabella’s daughter Catherine. It is Ferndinand and Isabella who hired Columbus.
This is important as the Cromwell family had control of the Ohio Company under Thomas Lord Fairfax and Thomas Lee. It was well recorded that Oliver Cromwell great uncle Thomas Cromwell arranged for the divorce of Catherine from Henry VIII.
Some people claim a connection to the Jamestown settlement through the Bolyn Family of Ann Bolyn and her sister.
For sure King James is related to Henry VIII and from what I can see from the St Clair family of Pittsburgh and the location of their graves in Pitttsburgh, King James was also related to Pocahontas. The St Clair family may have actually arranged the meeting and thus the big deal over this Powhatan family by the Royal Court of England.
Sir William Johnson was the Indian Agent for the Six Nations in New york. He was married to Chief Joseph Brant’s sister. Sir William Johnson’s nephew George Croghan was Queen Alliquippa’s Indian Agent. Chief Joseph Brant was married to George Croghan’s daughter. These are very tight family units. Chief Joseph Brant had very close ties with King George as he should. King George was also related to King James and to Henry VIII. Otherwise King George would not be King of England. The Myers family seems to be related to Pocahontas but before the Jamestown settlement.
So if I see this correctly, the Randolphs from England may also be connected to the Powhatan family. It is Thomas Jefferson’s father Peter Jefferson who gave over 100000 acres of land to Queen Alliquippa in Pittsburgh setting off the French and Indian War.
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34020The red hair may be the result of a substance called pocoon, which people in this area were documented to use on their skin and hair. There’s a thread about it here, http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=499&highlight=pocoon&page=2. Apparently it’s mentioned in Lawson’s Journal, which is linked from a first page (as well as a number of other historical links, http://www.saponitown.com/LawsonPartOne.htm.
I was wondering, when watching “The Tudors” obsessively last winter, if the Boleyn’s, as in Anne, were linked in any way to the Bowlins, Bollings, et al we talk about here. Not necessarily by blood, but if that family had a hand in the English settlements here.
Very interesting, all those people seem so familiar at this point. Interesting to imagine what small circles those people ‘ at the top” were running in. I guess that was the point of the aristocracy.
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34021Your right about black ink turning red with age so I have a 50% chance of being WRONG. It’s the other 50% I am working on. If in fact Bishop Meade was correct in his book about himself, that he was related to both Thomas Cromwell and Oliver Cromwell, I believe Pocahontas had dark red hair as depicted in John Gadsby Chapman’s painting.
For sure Thomas Lord Fairfax’s grandfather was a General under Oliver Cromwell’s army and Thomas Cromwell had a close relationship to the St Clair’s of William St Clair of Roselyn Chapel.
Those same St Clair’s moved to Pittsburgh in 1750 and St Clair Township was named after them. The Roselyn family had a farm and to this day it’s called Roselyn Farms.
George Washington’s guide to Pittsburgh was Christopher Gist who grandmother was Edith Cromwell. Edith Cromwell was related to Oliver Cromwell. She was said to be his granddaughter.
Washington Irving’s book states Henry VIII put the Washington family on the map when he gave the Washington’s land after his divorce with Catherine the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella.
It is my understanding that the St Clairs of Roselyn claim some sort of relationship to Columbus.
This is really a tight knit group and the trail is eazy to follow. I believe Pocahontas and her family have red hair as pictured in both the commissioned watercolors at Jamestown and John Gadsby Chapman’s painting of her Baptism at Westminster. It is at Westminster where the living Cromwell family said she is buried next to Henry VII. It’s well known that Henry VII was very close friends with Ferdinand and Isabella who hired Columbus. That was one of the reason Catherine married Henry VII’s two sons of which one was Henry VIII.
Remember Henry VIII wanted the divorce from Catherine because she had already been married to his dead brother.
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34264Hum! Just noticed something. I wonder if these Floyds are ancestors of the notorious Oklahoma Gangster, Pretty Boy Floyd, who does happen to be Native American. His nickname was “Choc” but I do not know if he was Choctaw or not. Kind of frivolous but interesting just the same.
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34274Hi Clydene,
Depending on the timeframe you are talking about, the Roanoke River was known as the Sappony River.
Since it was in Prince George, they are most likely referring to Sappony Creek. There are several of them. I don’t know anything about the Bollings, so I don’t know which one they were referring to, but there are Sappony Creeks located in present-day Chesterfield County, Sussex County, and I believe Dinwiddie County. Chesterfield was formed in 1749 from Henrico. Dinwiddie was formed from Prince George in 1752. Sussex was formed from Surry in 1754.
(From http://www.petersburghistory.com/) Present day City of Petersburg was originally formed as Fort Henry in 1645, renamed Peter’s Point and then renamed Petersburg in 1733. Established in 1748, it was incorporated as a town in 1784 and incorporated as a city in 1850. Parent counties for the City of Petersburg were Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George County. In 1784, the towns of Blandford, Pocahontas and Ravenscroft were added.

July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34281Just a short note regarding the red hair….according to many historians, the son of John Rolfe and Pocahontas, Thomas, married a Poythress woman who in turn had a daughter that married Capt Robt Bolling. IF this be the case, some make valid points that the meaning of Poythress is Red (Poi) Beard (thress). There is an advertisement that ran in the VA Gazette in the mid 1700’s that described a Poythress as having red hair.
BTW….I am a Poythress descendant and I, too, have red hair 🙂
Crystal 🙂
July 8, 2009 at 5:56 pm #34292I believe red hair would be very common in Pocahontas descendents and will be for the next 1000 years. Since no one knew much about DNA before 1950, artist before then just painted what they saw.
You don’t notice the red hair if you don’t look for it.
A Jamestown Historian, who I pointed out Pocahontas’ red hair, said she has been looking at those watercolors for 30 years and this is the first time she notice it. Then she goes into red mud and degraded black ink.
Maybe so but the Pocahontas story flows like water if in fact she had red hair.
It is my understand that Pocahontas and her sister Cleopatra had red hair because Cortez had red hair and Cortez was related to the St Clair/Stuart family of King James Stuart. Chief Powhatan mother was said to be Aztec. Caption John Smith describes Chief Powhanan’s brother as very short and looking Aztec. He describes Chief Powhatan as very tall and aristocratic.
This goes back to Columbus when Henry VIII married Ferndand and Isabella’s daughter Catherine. Henry’s sister married a Stuart and by 1600, King James Stuart is now King of England through that marriage.
By 1800, Chief Tucumseh was described as looking and acting like Chief Montezuma and Cortez combined. Maybe they were not that far off.
The Floyd family claim they are descendents of Cleopatra.
