I keep looking for answers to my search of my Indian heritage {Fugate, Clements, and Hand}.
I came across an old post dated 2000 where someone made reference to the fact that Saponi Indians were found among the TN Melungeons.
I had to reseach Melungeons as I wasn’t aware of them to know who they were. Very interesting.
Does anyone have any information that Saponi and Melungeons maybe married, etc?
Thank you.

December 10, 2007 at 12:02 am #29168What is actually the case is that the Indian component of some Melungeon families were of the Saponi, also Cheraw, mattapony, those that were in the PeeDee area as some of the names that became Melungeon names shared common ties with Saponi linked names. Now I am looking into the Rockingham County Indians from Goinstown as that is the group my Goins came from. There is a great website that has articles and documents relating to what tribes they think were in the mix.
