I’m alittle confused about something. I am researchiing the NDNS in and around Charlottsville, VA and those who were original inhabitants of the so called Jefferson Mountain. Some of what I have read states that there were Monacans traveling through this region, but Amherst county is farther southwest. What NDNS were in Albermarle county? And, are they federally recognized now?

Dear Deidre,
I put a post out about a month-month and a half ago regarding an historical marker to be placed on US-29 in Albemarle County several miles north of Charlottesville City recognizing the former town of Monasukapanough which was once inhabited by Tutelo-speaking people.Whether they were Saponi or Monacans is debatable.
There is a Lake Saponi in Greene County,VA which borders Albemarle on the
north.
Also,the stretch of US-29 south of Charlottesville is called Monacan Trail.
The Monacan Nation’s present base in Amherst County is only 2 counties south of Albemarle.Nelson County is south of Albemarle and borders with Amherst
also.

I was just curious if anyone has any detail on the location of the Saponi that were supposed to be in Grayson County, VA which used to be part of Montgomry County, VA?
Thank you Roca. Iremember your post and followed up on the erection of the marker with the local officials. It’s just hard to nail this information down about my children’s paternal gggrandmother from Charlottsville (Albermarle) who was said to have been full blood. But full blood what I ‘m not certain. Would you happen to know the name of the body of water near Elon where the Monacan State Park is?
