Hi!
I am trying to track back John W Goins who lived in Quewhiffle township, Hoke County North Carolina (Although at the time he was there it was not Hoke County it was_Cumberland) born abt 1840 father’s name unknown. Married Lucy Annie Bedsole had 14 children 7 boys, 7 girls, children include James Thomas Goins, Becky Annie Goins Mattie Goins, Lincoy Goins, Daniel Franklin Goins, John B Goins, Andrew Euler Goins (Evander)Dolly Goins. The 1880 census shows him with last name spelled Gowens and not all the children listed.
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #24974This was part of the Silver Run settlement on what is now Fort Bragg, made of in large part of Waldens, Goins, and other Indian families. Note that they Goins you are talking about are listed as white in the 1880 census, but are only a few houses away from the “mulatto” families of Neill Goins Sr, and Neill Goins, Jr. There is an old Goins Graveyard near this settlement, which once had it’s own church and school.
The Goins and Waldens in Quewhiffle and Little River Townships came from the Pocket Creek area of Moore County, which lost many of it’s records in a courthouse fire. Figuring out the family trees is often difficult. In 1850 Moore Co., there is a John Goins, 8 year old son of James Goins, which MAY be your ancestor. Household #775 In 1880, he is living next to an Arthur Goins, who is almost certainly some relation. Bill may be able to add to this.
The marriage record for H. W. Goins, dated 1888, and probably the same as the Wm. H. Goins listed in John and Lucy’s household in 1880, is listed a “colored”, the census listing notwithstanding. He married Lattia Walden at her father Henry Walden’s residence in Quewhiffle Township, Cumberland Co.
Both the Silver Run Settlement and the Pocket Creek Settlement in Moore Co have disintegrated today, with only graveyards hidden in the woods to mark their place. Silver Run might has emerged as a viable Indian community, except for the fact that the military base was created and all the landowners had to sell out and leave.
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #24977Thanks, Forest. Very helpful.
There are three John Goins (various spellings) there and it just needs more work to unravel them but it does appear that James Goins, b.abt. 1792 NC, is John W’s father.

Same deal with Camp Butner… dispersed Meadows, Mangum, Newton, Clements, Day, Jones, Goss, Hobgood, Bass, Bowling, and others in edge of Granville/Person. Funny how these govt projects seem prone to disrupting mixed blood and ndn groups.
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25004Looks like an external policy to deal with foriegn nations is being used internally!
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25005Hey Will check out the following materials.
John Gowen was married to Ann Gowen January 11, 1810, ac-cording to “Albemarle County, Virginia Marriages, 1772-1850.” Children born to John Gowen and Ann Gowen Gowen are unknown.
John Gowen “of Albemarle County” received pay for military service in the French & Indian War. His compensation was authorized by the Virginia Assembly about 1760.

This is some of the Goens research, a huge file.
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25017I’m responding to Will Goins in post #1 above, about the wife of John W. Goins —
Married Lucy Annie Bedsole had 14 children
Just wondered if her last name should be Bledsoe. That was a prominent family name among the core Melungeon group, and on the early Tennessee frontier (not necessarily the same family). See for instance this essay by Jack Goins:
http://www.jgoins.com/emhistory.htm
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25018Yeah, I was looking out for Bledsoe, too, but the surname is listed on a series of census records as Bedsole and earlier as Bedsaul.
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25021Apparently, it’s all the same family. Some individuals spelled it both ways, Bedsole and Bledsoe.

February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25035Thank you. That is helpful. I have had FTDNA testing done and know that John W is a relative (GGGrandfather) tracking back further seems to actually go to Va. Any and all information is valuable.

February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25036Yes Jack Goins is a relative of mine although we haven’t found the actual paper trail yet, DNA indicates it. He runs the Goins DNA Project at http://www.jgoins.com/goins_dna.htm
Thanx
Will

There is an online published family tree by a descendant of a John J. Goins, b. 10 Mar 1831 Moore Co., NC, that you need to be aware of since you’re attempting to matchup by DNA. This John Goins is purported to have married Lucy Ann Bedsole but they have the wrong John, as proven by the 1850 thru 1880 Moore Co., NC Census records, although this “other” John, b. 1831, is related (prob. 1st cousin) to John W., b.abt. 1842. I’ll list some info on this “other” John as we go.

February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25062Thanks Bill, most of this I have but some not. This is helpful.
February 19, 2007 at 7:18 pm #25188Well Bill I managed to tie John w to James-thanks to a cousin I found still living in NC. He stated that the family has always been in Moore county and we are descended from Cherokee and connected somehow to the Lumbee Indian tribe. The search goes on. Thanks for the help
