Anyone familiar with the Shelton and Sandlins of Clay county, KY?
I have a William Shelton and Margaret Sandlin marrying on 5 Nov. 1867 in Clay County KY. They are not there in 1870 nor are they in any neighbhoring counties that I can see.
Or simply any ideas or thoughts on where they “might” be would be helpful.

August 23, 2005 at 1:32 pm #16153Sheree,
Regarding your Gen6:
John Kennedy Sandlin, b.abt. 1824 NC
m’d 1st: Martha, b.abt. 1822 NC
their dau Margaret, b. abt. 1846 Ky
their dau Martha, b.abt. 1858 Ky
(per 1860 Owsley Co., Ky Census)
John m’d 2nd Ginney, b.1839 Va
(per 1870 Clay Co., Ky Census)
Your Gen7:
Marion Muncy, b.abt. 1839 Ind (later census show b.Ky)
m’d 1st: Mary Jane, b.abt. 1836 Va
(per 1880 Clay Co., Ky Census, ED 24 Bullskin Pct 6, p.512C)
7 houses before Marion & Mary Jane Muncy in 1880 visit 89, at visit 82:
Shelton, Margaret; Head; 33; widow; Ky, Ky, NC.
…………, William A.; 12, son, Ky, NC, Ky.
…………, Hiram; 7, son, Ky, NC, Ky.
…………, MARTHA; 6, dau, Ky, NC, Ky.*******
…………, Sarah; 4, dau, Ky, NC, Ky.
…………, Mary H.; 3, dau, Ky, NC, Ky.
…………, Emily; 2, dau, Ky, NC, Ky.
…………, Verrinda; 9 months (b.Aug), dau, Ky, NC, Ky.
You have an abstract of the 1900 Laurel Co., Ky Census showing Cam’s wife Martha b. Dec 1876, Ky, and additional census ages for this Martha are fairly consistent with that. I’d suggest that Cam’s wife Martha Shelton is the 6 yr old listed on the 1880 Clay census – no one else comes close, age-wise, and their mother’s were not named Margaret.
[Samuel C. Shelton, b.abt. 1826 Tenn, and wife Mary A., b.abt. 1835 Ky, did have a son William, but he was 16 on the 1870 Owsley Co., Indian Creek census, p.2, and living at home with his parents. I think this Samuel is a possible brother of the William Shelton, b.abt. 1822 Tenn, who was living next door to Henry PONDER, b.abt. 1829 NC, on the 1860 Clay Co., Ky Census, p.110.
John (Kennedy) Sandlin lived next door to this Henry Ponder in 1870 Clay Co Census.]
In 1900 Clay Co., Ky; ED33 Sextons Creek Mag Dist 6; Sheet 11A, Visit 175, is Margaret (Sandlin) Shelton’s son William, b. May 1865, living next to Marion Muncy, b. Apr 1839, and wife Margret, b. Mar 1845 Ky, with a Granddau Margret Shelton, b. Nov 1891, living with them.
It looks like some of the people who supplied you the information may have had their Margaret’s and Martha’s mixed up.
I haven’t found William and Margaret Shelton in 1870 either but I’ll see what I can do.
Bill
August 23, 2005 at 1:32 pm #16161oh yhea this is a mess.
So the William shelton that I have in my records is actually the brother to MY Martha Shelton that married Cam Williams. I changed the information for Margaret and now I just need to figure out who William Shelton was.
So it looks as if Margaret was a Sandlin and the d/o John Kennedy Sandlin and Martha Ponder.
Now the William Shelton b. abt 1854? married whom? I’m confused here.
Sherry
August 23, 2005 at 1:32 pm #16172Samuel Crawford Shelton, b. 1832 Washington Co., Tenn, married on 30 Dec 1852 in Clay Co., Ky, Mary Ann Gabbard, b. Mar 1840 Clay Co.
Their son William, b.abt. 1854 Clay Co., m’d Tabitha PAGE, although I don’t have a date on that marriage.
(Samuel Crawford Shelton is reported to have died in 1940 Clay Co., so maybe there’s a death cert on him? This could be a waste of money because after that length of time, no one may know who his parents were.)
William Shelton, b. 1868, could not be the William who marr’d Margaret Sandlin in 1867. This William is Margaret Sandlin Shelton’s son and you’re right, he’s the older brother of your Martha Shelton who marr’d Cam Williams.
……………………
Living next door to Henry and Kiziah (McDaniel) Ponder in 1860 Clay Co., is William Shelton, b.abt. 1822 Tenn with wife Lavina, b.abt. 1826 “Clay Co”, Ky. William & Lavina’s children in 1860 are Susan, 7; George W., 4; & Rebecca, 3 months.
I think this William, b.1822, is the one that marr’d Margaret Sandlin in 1867. We’ll know for sure once we can find them or their children in 1870 – haven’t yet.
Samuel C(rawford) Shelton lives about 63 houses further along.
In 1850 however, “Crawford” Shelton, 20, b.Tenn., is working-out not far from William Shelton, 29, b.Tenn and wife Malvina, 23, b.Ky. I think Malvina is Lavina, altho I say that with a bit of forboding that they are different and Lavina is a Ponder, dau of John Ponder, who lived next door to Elizabeth Shelton (see below) – even tho the two Lavina’s ages don’t match very well.
Anyway, living among the PONDER families and only 7 houses from William Shelton, is one Elizabeth SHELTON, 80, b.Va.
I speculate….
She has no occupation and owns no real estate, so someone’s supporting her. She’s too old to be William’s mother if her age is recorded anywhere near her real age at that time, but she would plausibly be related – Samuel, William (and his wife) and Elizabeth are the ONLY Sheltons in 1850 Clay Co. I’m thinking she may also be closely related to the definitely related McDaniel’s and Ponder’s that surround her since if she is William’s grandmother, I’d think she would be living with him – but this kinda thing can really play with a person’s sense of logic 🙂
The Ponders and McDaniels seem to be intermarried with the ROBERTS, BAKERs and HOLCOMBs.
………………Clay County Marriage Records……
Marion Muncy + Margaret Shelton on 25 Feb 1885 in Clay Co.
Marion Muncy had previously m’d a Mary Jane _?_ and they were living in 1860 Perry Co., Ky with a 5 month old son John.

Josephus Ponder, Clay County, KY May 11, 1898
I was born in Bell County, KY June 10, 1834. My father was Joseph Ponder. He was born and reared in South Carolina. My great grandfather Ponder came to America from Ireland. I do not know where he landed nor where he settled but I supposed he came to South Carolina. As my father was raised there, I suppose my grandfather was reared there also. My father came to Buncombe, North Carolina before his marriage to Miss Catherine Holcomb. In 1834 he moved to Bell Co, KY where he stayed one year and returned to North Carolina and in 1844 he came to Clay County, KY and located on Sexton’s Creek. He died on the head of that creek about 1875. He had children as follows: Betsey (Daniel Murray), Mary (Levi Bailey), Martha (John Sandlin), Deligta (Reuben McDaniel), May (married ___McDaniel), Henry married Kizzie McDaniel, Sally (Nathan Holcomb), Nancy (William Baker), Josephus – myself, married Tabitha Murray.
My maternal grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He said the sweetest morsel he ever ate was when in the army, he found a dead turkey which the maggots had taken in possession and this was his most palatable meal. This incident fixed the fact in my mind. I know that my father volunteered in teh war and then hired a substitute so it was not the war of 1812. My mother said that she supposed father was gone but in two or threee days he gave her an agreeable surprise by suddenly putting in his appearance at home.
My father had a brother Robert, who lived and died on NC My uncle John lived and died in Sexton. His son, Robert, has children as follows: William Ponder of the Rader Mills, Clay County, Andrew Jackson at Cumberland, Ia.: Joseph lives at Jasper, Arkansas: james G. in Rockcastle County, Livingstone: John J. lives at Camp Ground, Laurel Co, Boreing Po Jefferson PO Tuttle, Laurel County or Knox; Jacob K. Ponder lives in Garrard co on Dick’s River; Bettie , Jasper, Arkansas; Achsah (Sandlin); Siler PO
Uncle John had 16 children.
My father had a sister who married Robert Haley but I do not know where they lived. My uncle John had, besides Robert; children as follows: Zadock called “Zade” who went to Missouri; Jacob died near London leaving a large family; Jackson who lived in Wolfe; Joseph; Lawrence; and Patterson who settled in Wolfe County, KY Also Achsah; Bettie (James Moore); Malinda, Raney, Nancy, Dorcas(Kelly) all settled in Wolfe. So the Ponders in KY sprang from Joseph and John Ponder.
My mother had a brother, Abner Holcomb who came from NC and located in Jackson County. He had children as follows: Allen, John, Mason, James, Polly and Dorcas.
There is another set of Holcombs in Jackson who came from Leslie but I do not know what the relationship is. I think all the Ponders are related. All I have ever know were kin.

In Cec, 1863 the regiment reenlisted, and in the veteran organization, received the veterans of the 19th and 22nd ky infantry. It remained on duty in the Department of the Gulf in May 1864, was ordered to join the Red River expediton under the command of Gen.
