Hello, I am trying to trace ancestors back to VA & NC that migrated to Mississippi then Louisiana and eventually ended up in Texas beginning as early as 1820’s. I have taken leaps of faith working backwards using bits and pieces supplied by distant relatives and gotten a long ways but now hit a brick wall. My grandmother always denied any NA lineage, but my father met a far distant cousin by chance that is part of the Cherokee Nation and he says the Goins family comes from NC, VA & TN.
I have traced back to Thomas Nash Sr. born abt 1753/64 in Chowan, NC married Emily Sarah Slater born abt 1761 in 1780 in VA?
then married Anna Goins/Goings born abt 1770/1773 VA in 1803 St Landrys, LA
(she was either a widowed Goins or was by birth a member of Goins traveling with the Nash family to LA no one knows her parents name yet)
Children for Thomas Nash Sr and wives?
Keziah Nash B abt 1789
Michael Nash B abt 1804
Martha Patsy B abt 1787
Fanny B abt 1782/85
William B abt 1782/85
Thomas Jr B abt 1785
Elizabeth B abt 1794
Rebecca “becky” B abt 1801
Mary Polly B June 6, 1781 Died Sept 14, 1855
buried Hick, Vernon LA
Keziah Nash married Phillip Goins/Goings born 1770/1785 MS?? in Natchitoches, LA in 1811/15 and that begins my search for the Goins family, in papers Phillip’s father is listed as Steven/Stephen Goins born in Miss or Va. Phillip was previously married to Oti Montro and had several children. I can give list if needed for help 🙂
Phillip and Keziah had a son Michael Leroy Goins b abt 1811/1815 who married his aunt Rebecca “Becky” Nash Taylor’s daughter (married 1st cousin) Hardinea Taylor b abt 1819 her father was William H. Taylor b abt 1789 in VA. He had a second wife Margaret ?? b abt 1793.
There are so many conflicting dates from then on to 1880 that I am about to pull my hair out. All the names match up but not birth years on marriage or census records when some have been married more than once. I can find wedding dates within a couple years but the birth years leap about 10-15yrs in some cases.
Sorry to be so long winded. These names are linked with the Goins of Oklahoma and Atascosa Cty, TX, and they are supposed to be the NA/Whites that migrated to LA by way of Mississippi, and grouped in south Texas until the 1930’s when a few scattered. There were several Goins that moved together from LA, and evidently their parents moved there from either NC or VA.
I am not a person who just wishes for NA in my background, I already have some through another line, I just want to know who my family is and where they came from. My grandmother refused to talk about her family and I got tidbits from my grandfather about her side here and there. I am just filling in my puzzle and hoping that someone has run across the names Goins/Goings, Nash, Slater and Taylor somewhere in the midst of research for NC,VA or even TN.
Thanks a million for reading this…Monica
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29478Oh shoot, I forgot that someone in that mess of people was supposedly Choctaw but no one knows who. I just read some of my dad’s notes and found that in amongst all the rest of the misc info. For the record my father and I are skeptical that any of these people were Cherokee, but of a lesser known, less popular people. That is how I ended up here
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29495Welcome to saponitown, Monica. Indeed the Goins name does come back to the piedmont and coastal areas of Va and NC and was NA/white by the late 1600s or early 1700s. There is much to be found on Goins and related families by using the search feature at the top of the page. btw……. the first name “Keziah” originates in tidewater VA and is a clear “tag” of Va mixed bloods. Welcome home 😉
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29496Thank you sooooo much 😉 I was moved literally to tears by reading so many of the posts on here last night. I had come across the name Goins in one old thread but hadn’t searched the site for it yet.
This has recently become a bit of an obsession for me because my father is the oldest of his family, and is just now at 73 learning something about his mother’s family. I know that in the extended Goins family here in Texas we have had a Texas Ranger, Federal Marshal, and someone killed by the infamous outlaw King Fisher. Exactly who these men were and how they are related is still a bit hazy, but it is going to be well worth it.
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29497Well thank you to the person that sent me this link because that is my family for sure. Just wanted to share it with anyone else looking for the Goins that went to Louisiana & Texas

January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29503King Fisher goes back to Capt. John Damron my mothers father’s line. These Damrons also connected to the Goins early in Va. and Tenn.

January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29515Let me get my jaw off the floor Cowboy…. wow!! Ok well I know how things can get changed in oral repetition, but the King Fisher story was told to my father as a child by his grandfather William Galindo (son of Martha Goins and Clemente Galindo born in Atascosa County,TX) and also was told to me by my great uncle Billy/Willie/William Galindo before his death.
We have no proof to back it up, however the story goes that King Fisher and his men ambushed and killed a possible son of Martha Goins Galindo for the cattle he was bringing from the Laredo area to Rossville, Atascosa Cty, TX. The speculation is that this was possibly my 1g-grandfather William Galindo’s brother Martin but a year of the story is not known. We do have a written story about Martin Jr seeing his father’s killer years after it happened, confronting him and surviving…. but the murderer’s name is not mentioned or a date given to this.
Also the Texas Ranger in the family was supposedly gunned down at a festival dance in Waco, but once again there are no names or dates given and it has only been passed on orally and in secret so both stories are fuzzy.

You can google King Fisher the outlaw and read about him i do not know much other than what is
on the net, i would not doubt your family story from
what i have read.
This line of Damron or Damerons went in to texas my
line went into the Cherokee Nation OK, they say all
Damron’s go back to one Emigrant.
You can do a search here on Dameron, and find one
Dameron and Goin connection, also read Pat Spurlock’s book for more info. on them.

January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29522Frazier, Damron, Castle/Casteel/Steel, and Jones tie into my maternal lines here and there. Just found a Jones from the 1700’s that ties into my Ferguson line yesterday in some old recorded interviews I have from the descendants of my ancestors in W.V.. Not surprising since they all came out of Virginia originally. So the Damron post is interesting and something I haven’t heard about until now.
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29523Hey Steve,
It is good to cross trails with you and since are ancestor’s were in that area of Wayne Co. WV. and KY. it doesn’t surprise me at all.
Anybody that connects to southeastern, KY. and WV. should join KY. Ancestry started by Patrick Nichols, i see alot of these surnames also lots of old pictures that people are researching here on his site.

January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29524Thanks a bunch Cowboy for that side road on my trip. I have read a lot about King Fisher just because I like stories of outlaws and lawman. I have found a couple Damron/Goins paths crossings on the web since I got your info and it is something I will delve into when I get the chance.

Yeah, sammarroq is pulling up alot of old posts on this forum that has families and places that tie into my maternal line from Wayne Co. The Ratliffs tie into my family and live/lived in the county (Wayne), and the areas of Catlettsburg, Floyd Co., Big Sandy tie into my Adkins, Hale, Osburn,Skaggs, etc., lines. I know my Hales lived where the Blackburns lived, and I am still trying to sort out who Blackburn Adkins was who fought at The Battle Of Point Pleasant. My gut instict tells me his mother was a Blackburn. But I have no proof of that so far, just a feeling based on Blackburn being a surname and not a first name.
But I won’t get off this thread’s topic with all that. Just an observation. So I will bow out now and just say there is more going on, IMO, than meets the eye on all these families…probably right under our proverbial noses.
Carry on…
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29554De-rail the thread train all you want Steve-O!! I find it all interesting as I dig deeper. I would like to find out more about the Dameron/Damron simply because they may hold a clue to me finding some other relatives in the puzzle.
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29555Nothing really to add at this point other than I just find what is being brought up lately here as being interesting. As I have said, I just think something was going on, I am just not sure as to what it was yet. Ha Ha
January 27, 2008 at 7:50 am #29673Ok I have veered on a new branch and gotten some more names. I searched for these 2 on here to no avail, but I know in my heart there is connections to some of ya’ll.
