There is another line I am finding on my maternal grandmother’s side that links to the Saponi.
In my conversations with Rick Haithcock I described my ancestors. His first question was if I had any Winburn or Jeffries in my line from Greene Co Ohio. I thought he said Woodburn. When I went back and looked at my files I realized I had a Walburn in Greene Co. Then I went back and consulted the names in his Saponi book and realized it was actually Winborn/Winbunh.
It struck me how easy it is for names to get jumbled today, let alone hundreds of years ago. I realized that my Walburn is most likely the same family. All the dates and places match up.
This is a line some of my cousins have insisted is 100% European for years. Dora MCS Smith passed the Blackfoot name to his children and grandchildren. His wife Bessie Mae Gates is the line that was said to be 100% European. The Gates genealogy goes way back in England/Europe.
Bessie Mae was the granddaughter of Experience (Pera) Walburn. Her parents were Robert Walburn and Catherine Thomas. Robert’s parents were John Walburn and Catherine McColley. They came from VA, with stops in Sussex County NJ and Pendelton Co WV before Greene Co OH, and later Delaware Co IN.
I have no pictures of our Robert Walburn, but found this picture of another Robert Walburn from a branch of the same family. Rick’s second question was if my line marries into the line with the Blackfoot ID, which it does.

Yes. We’ve tried to find a match because we have a lot of similarities in our ancestry. Also tried a DNA match via GedMatch – nothing there either. My Potters are not one of my well documented lines, it brick walls with a Potter born in PA in 1800 (have no more detail).
I’m waiting to get Volume 1 of Rick Haithcock’s book to see if it offers any leads. Will probably take a while as he says the book is 3 1/2 inches thick.
This is Lydia Heaton b 1843 Delaware Co IN – Bessie Mae’s mother – daughter of Experience Walburn b 1817 Greene Co OH and William Heaton b 181? Greene Co OH – this is the furthest generation back I have a picture of in this line.August 17, 2014 at 5:42 pm #36525Looking at archives it appears the name is also listed as Windborn, Winbun, and Windbern.
