Don’t know where to start, except that I came across this today looking for Phoebe Hardy. Looking because I had kind of come in via a “back door” from a Jean Allen and a Bond to Benjamin Allen son of my Joseph. I have never found anything on the children of Joseph other than Memucan, my direct. But today I found Benjamin with a son William Jesse married to Phoebe Hardy. Somehow that led me to Williams and Hardy.
Joseph had brother Robert..I knew one of his children, Agnes married a Williams but had no other info…Here is Agnes Allen married to Richard Williams.. and hence the Hardy connection..Ann Williams and John Hardy..see the Meadows too mentioned by Dreaminghawk in another post and here again…

November 6, 2005 at 12:09 am #17325A brother to John Hardy married to Ann Williams, is Thomas Hardy and he had a daughter Phoebe..Born C1782 and moved to Ga. Another site showed Phoebe Hardy married to William Jesse Allen B 1778..son of Benjamin..Son of Joseph Allen and Sarah Hunt…IF right..William Jesse Allen born in Edgefield District South Carolina…makes sense because not many Allen members of this family stayed in Va past 1750ish or so. The one discrepancy I do see is that Robert Allen, brother to Joseph married Elizabeth Young..not Stokes..there is a division on that..but I think Young myself….anyway, lots of William and Hardy info…Sue J

Jogdelog cousin!
I have the Hardy surname on my maternal side… The Hardy Family in Halifax, NC is one of the surnames you will see associated with the Haliwa-Saponi… My maternal g-grandmother was Sarah Hardy (b. 1875-1919, Halifax, NC)… Sarah Hardy was 1/2 Black & 1/2 Saponi… She married my g-grandfather, Junious Justice Qualls (b. 1868-1946, Brinkleyville, Halifax, NC) who was 1/2 White/Powhatan & 1/2 Saponi… There is also a Tecumseh Hardy (b. 1890-????, Brinkleyville, Halifax, NC) that I am certain we are kin to, who was enumerated as Black on the 1900 Census… Many of the Hardy’s in that area are enumerated as such, but are undoubtedly from the “Meadows” area in Brinkleyville that is associated with the Haliwa-Saponi… Not sure if our Hardy lines cross, but it would be amazing if they did… 🙂

Can you elaborate on this. What is the Meadows area and why is it called that?

Absolutely…
My maternal family is from Brinkleyville Township, Halifax, NC… My g-g-grandfather (Junious Qualls) accumulated 308 acres of land in Brinkleyville… If you go to http://www.haliwa-saponi.com, you will find that they specifically mention Brinkleyville Township as the main region, in addition to Fishing Creek (Warren County) of where Natives in the area had settled… If you look on a map, you will find Qualls Farm Rd. which passes directly through the Haliwa Saponi community area…
I believe, the area is called the “Meadows” area because of its lowland proximity to Medoc Mountain… but I am not positive… but the area has always been referenced as such… I hope that helps…

November 6, 2005 at 12:09 am #36807Daniel Meadows family is in eastern VA around 1700. Next they are in Bute co(Vance?) then old Granville on the Flatt River by late 1700s. Could they have spent the “missing generation” near Fishing Creek? Could that area have been a part of Bute at that time?
I’m really asking if “The Meadows” could be the old Meadows land and thus refers to a mixed blood family surname? My family.
Not trying to hijack thread but I think all these families tie together and this may be the location where they are most closely connected.

Dreaminghawk!
You are my FAMILY, my elder, how could you “hijack” the thread :)… that could be a viable explanation… somehow if we venture far enough, many of our lines will overlap & cross… the treatment of our people, & how they designed the system to separate us is a crime… & I know that’s an understatement… Hopefully through dialogue, research, & speaking to all the Elder-elders still here w/ us can assist in piecing our stories back together…
Peace & Love!

November 6, 2005 at 12:09 am #36810I felt a strong connection to you when you joined Saponitown but didn’t know why. I truly believe that Creator and the ancestors will guide us to our answers if we see the signs and follow through on the tidbits they show us.
I have been poring over my Meadows paper file this morning. I’m old-school. My genealogy is in boxes and binders that fill a room. I’ll pull up a Meadows thread to post what I have located. Basically, my Meadows family spent the mid 1700s on land that included Little Fishing Creek in present day Warren Co.
It’s ironic that I recently warned everyone to know the genealogy of the NC/VA counties so as not to misplace their families geographically and I have my pivotal family misplaced by 50 miles….. and was oblivious to a possible Haliwa Saponi connection.
Thank you so much. Whether “The Meadows” has any connection to my family or not, it was your mention of the location that sent my thinking in the right direction to start breaking through this major wall.
