hello,
there is an old thread on this forum about wimberlys, vaughns, birds and others that has captivated my imagination since google led me to it a couple of months ago.
i, too, am a descendant of zachariah wimberly and am familiar with the discord regarding who his mother is. my father’s parents were divorced when he was very young and we had precious little family history on his father’s people.
however, when i read that we might have a native american ancestor, an old photo immediately came to mind.
years ago, when going through my grandmother’s things, i came across an old photo of a lady who looked native american to me. she is standing in a formal pose wearing a beautiful dress with pleated ruffles.
if you zoom in, there are traces of beading in the fringe of the scarf that is draped around her hips. her dark bangs are cut straight across her forehead. she’s wearing a wedding band and another on her left hand and two rings on her right.
there is no indication of the date of the picture or her name. the photographer appears on the back as e.w. mealy’s art gallery in monroe, louisiana.
the odd thing is that it doesn’t seem to fit with any of my grandmother’s other photos. i don’t know if my grandmother just picked it up somewhere or if it might be the suspected native american ancestor in the wimberly line.
i wonder if someone here might be able to place it in time using the dress? is there a place i might post it? or email it to interested parties?
we do have other information on our wimberlys (burke county, ga) if anyone might be interested. they, too, appear to follow a naming pattern when naming their children.
even if a native connection is never made, this site is a treasure. so many things i never knew . . .
thank you.
