Doing a “search” for “blackfoot” on the Gibson Co., Ind rootsweb site produced a result for Providence Cemetery in Barton Twp. It is not identified as having a name change but it did come up and
there are RAINEY and WOODS people buried here as well as a lot of other surnames we’re familiar with.
The direct link to the cemetery is:

The link to the Search Engine for Gibson Co, is:

August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10490Neither one of these links worked when I tested them from the forum posting…. one truncated badly.
I got there thru the following links……
state: Indiana
county: Gibson
scroll down to near the bottom of the page and there’s a link for Gibson County’s rootsweb link. See if that works.
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10500So, is this the two different Blackfoot Cemetary’s Vance was reffering to a ways back? Wow! This stuff is so cool. And I’m learning a lot just by following your tracks Bill, thank you for being…..Love & Light, Lynella.
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10607I need this info. Can you help me? The links are not working. Thanks, Vicki
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10609Certainly.
I think this will work from here. Printout the directions “to take with you”:
at their homepage, look on the left and click on “Indiana”.
Once at the “IndGenWeb Project” homepage, scroll down and click on “County Sites”.
Once there, scroll down and click on “Gibson”.
Once there, click on “Enter Here” button.
at that new page, scroll all the way to nearly the bottom and click on “Gibson County Ind Cemeteries”.
at that new page, scroll down and click on “Providence” or any other cemetery name.
……..
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10615Thanks, I found it!
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10616Hey Bill could this Gibson Co. be named for some of the Blackfoot Gibson’s, ? It’s an interesting combination.!
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10617Yes, it could have. I am looking for Blackfoot Walkers. I have read where Blackfoots are derived from Cherokees. Is that true?
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10631I don’t think anyone knows for certain how the “Blackfoot-Cherokee” moniker came to be. “Blackfoot” in this context refers to Eastern Sioux.
I’d be interested to know where you read that Blackfoot is derived from Cherokee.

August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10633Bill, I will post it if I can find it again. Came across this while looking:

August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10638I need to start reading more posts. I have Woods ancestors in Gibson County, Indiana. In the Blackfoot cemetary in Pike COunty I think it was are buried some Richey’s. My Woods and Richey’s married each other in Gibson County, Indiana before heading to Arkansas in 1844.
I can trace my Richey’s to Indiana sometime between 1797 when John Richey was born in Virginia and 1812 when as a boy still he joined the Indiana Mititia and by the end of the War he was at Mobile Bay, Alabama where he was dicharged. My Woods appear in Gibson County, Indiana in 1806 arriving there from Holston River, in Eastern Tennessee.
I hope to have time to read about this cemetary but probably won’t til this afternoon when I get off work. Ya know there is a John Richey listed in the Cherokee Reservation Rolls of 1818. In 1820 my John Richey is in Indiana, but I wonder if during his travels to Mobile Bay he came throughthe Cherokee Nation . . . anyhow I wanna give it a shot. It is probably a different John Richey, but I wanna have a look at that reservation roll record anyhow . . .

August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10639The only Blackfoot Cemetary I know of is the one in Pike County. I looked at that Providence cemetary and didn’t see anything mentioning the word “Blackfoot”.
Bill, what am I missing? 🙂 I saw the Wood’s but they were later Woods. Might or might not be related. But thanks for that link. Maybe some of those other cemetaries might have the Wood’s and Richey’s and Dickson’s we are related to in them.

August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10640Vance, I don’t know that you missed anything…..
I “searched” on “Blackfoot cemetery Gibson County” and got the Providence cemetery as the lone result. Other than that, there is nothing that connects them. I couldn’t come up with a reason for Blackfoot and Providence cemeteries to be the same but thought I’d post it.
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10643This all gets so exciting, doesn’t it? I wish you the best of luck with your research. I hope it goes smoothly for you. Lynella.
August 7, 2004 at 3:22 pm #10648Hey vance sorry about the allusion, sometimes I forget to be specific.
What I was refering to was the post that Bill did, Hardin, Carey Collins, Gibson. I believe that this is where he mentioned the Hawkins family. Sorry about the lack of specifics, by the way I think you’re doing great , I haven’t noticed any delays.
All the best, Tom
