Was an article in Central VA’s “Daily Progress” (Charlottesville) Monday,6/20/2005 about Vicki Wampler,a real estate agent from Big Stone Gap and the Appalachian Cherokee Nation.
Ms. Wampler became chief of the “Cherokee Bear Clan” about 2 yrs ago.
This Cherokee faction is presently reorganizing and hopes to eventually buy
land in SW VA.

Why Virginia? I wonder.
June 22, 2005 at 2:25 pm #15362Dear Christina,
I’m not positive, but I think the Daily Progress article claims that some Cherokee hid in SW VA and adjoining areas of TN and NC during the 1830’s relocation period. They intermixed with other ethnicities and may well have “passed” to avoid exile and race prejudice.
I don’t know any Tutelo/Saponi or other Siouan;what does “Wakantanka
kiyakiju kin oyate.” mean?

I don’t know what the other words mean but I do know Wakantanka is the Great Spirit of the Lakota people (Sioux). HE is what we christian indians call God, the Holy Spirit. To me Wakantanka and the Holy Spirit are one in the same. So may he keep you and bless you always.

Thanks for this post.
There is no such thing as a “Cherokee Bear Clan” .
Some people might think I’m an ogre, really I am a nice guy. But there is just so much stuff online that is not accurate conserning the Cherokee, it’s so overwhelming — I just wanna give up sometimes . . .

June 22, 2005 at 2:25 pm #15392It means,
Creator Unite the tribe or (nation)
“Wakantanka kiyakiju kin oyate.”
might not be perfect but I am in the slow process of learning Lakota.
Oh by the way thank you Vance!!!!
Seriously, I am not ashamed or embarrassed to admit that I truly had no clue the Cherokee did not have a Bear Clan! Very weird, last year when we went to Ceremony in Georgia we stopped in Cherokee, NC and although I dont remember seeing it on any clan flags, logos ect. Allllll the hobby shops portrayed it, this is noooo dig on the tribe because hey you gotta survive, but it can be confusing and I am no expert, but I usually have a good sense about things, thank goodness I never talk about stuff I am not 100% sure of!
Thank You for dispelling a HUuuuge myth!
