December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18123Hiya,
What part of NC were these folks from, I have Simmons in both sides of my family but no Hudsons or Allens (although an Allen married one of my Etheridges). I have Simmons who moved down into Bertie County from Southampton County in Virginia and I have Simmons in Greene County NC. The Greene County Simmons are my father line and the Southampton Simmons are my mothers line. But then I’m Nottoway through my mother so that’s makes perfect sense. 🙂 I know my simmons out of Southampton bought part of the Nottoway reservation so did my Ruffins and my Blows..we know the Blows married into the Nottoway….oh I found out somethings about my Etheridges you were helping me with….one of my Etheridge lines came out of Camden/Currituck County areas in NC asnd the Currituck site has pictures of Etheridges!!! Those pics tell the story I just wish I knew which natives peoples they married over that way. I’ve spending alot of time lately with my Nottoway brothers and sisters on our yahoo board. Check out the site NCNottoway.org these are my people. In the picture of the council members there’s one named Talmedge Branch he is my 2nd cousin. He represents the Wolf Clan.

December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18132Linda,
So far I can’t find the place of birth for James Simmons…just nc but with the exact birth date of 29 mar 1767. I do have Elizabeth Hudson his wife born Va Mar. 18 1770 with father William born 1734 in Hanover co Va and his father Isaac Hudson born circa 1710 Va but died in Bute co NC. But James Simmons? Supposed father is John Simmons and there is a John Simmons Jr. listed on a 1750 deed in Southampton co. I mentioned before that Sylvanus Stokes also witnessed a deed..he married a Walker.
Pages 502-503: ROBERT BAILEY to DRURY DAVIS dated 9 Aug 1743 (sic)
100 acres adj. THOMAS DAVIS, SAMUEL BLOW, and Long Branch (part of 250
acres to sd. ROBERT from the NOTTOWAY INDIANS), S: ROBERT (signed)
BAILEY, W: SAMUEL (signed) BLOW, WILLIAM (signed) SIMMONS, and SYLVANUS
(signed) STOKES I don’t know how…cont
December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18134they would connect but they’re all there together. Allens and Warrens listed too, both direct surnames of mine. Walker too.
Back to James Simmons, I don’t have access to ancestry.com now, can someone check? Bill, maybe you could help?

December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18137I found the same info you did on William Hudson and Susannah Allen, but they may have m’d in Lunenburg Co., Va about 1747, and William was probably born before 1739 (1729?)
The listings for William Hudson’s grandparents and that generation of children seem to be confused with a number of their children’s children, i.e., Isaac Hudson’s (m’d a LEWIS?? ) children.
I did not find parents for James Simmons, b.1767, but his 12 Oct 1786 marriage to Elizabeth Hudson, was likely in Northampton Co., NC, as that is where she is supposed to have been born and “NC” is listed for their marriage in the “U.S. and International Marriage Record” database.
It looks like they moved thru Georgia and then on to Alabama.
Bill
December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18139Thanks Bill!
AT least that verifies the marriage of James and Elizabeth.

December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18144Yes Bill, you found the Simmons from Southampton in Northampton County, NC.
Sue there are Baileys and Blows that are proven Nottoway…I have both these families in my lineage. I have about 5 lines that go back to the Nottoway and many others that go to the area of the Nottoways. Many of the families out of Southampton can later be found in Bertie, Northampton, Edgecombe, Gates and Halifax Counties in North Carolina. The Nottoway, Meherrin and Nansemond basicly stayed together over the years. Samuel Blow that purchased land from the Nottoway in that deed built Tower Hill on the land and the Nottoway were given continued rights to the property at least that is what family stories say. The Kello family bought it from the Blows after the Civil War. He has continued this tradition in fact the Nottoway have had meetings in the cottage on the property. See the Nottoway had the land and the Nansemond who didn’t go with the Christian Nansemond moved to the rez with the Nottoways. They are still together today mostly in Hertford County NC with many still in Southampton and still more in Halifax nd Edgecombe Counties. My cousin Talmedge Branch lives in Halifax County at least he did when I last saw him. I grew up around Sessums, Etheridges, Wynnes and Branches who all claimed native ancestry I have found i descend from ALL these families. The Sessums, Wynnes and Branches came out of the area that is now Southampton County. How I’m wondering if you aren’t possibly Nottoway too…what do you think?
Linda
December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18145And if the deeds and such are accurate it seems the Blows were there most everytime witnessing the purchases….protecting I’d be willing to bet. And the Wynnes interpreted for them… again protecting I’d be willing to bet. My Branches, Wynnes and Sessums all became politicans in North Carolina……hehehehe and what state has the largest native population east of the Mississippi River? And today Bob Etheridge is a senator from NC and so it continues…….it’s a 400 year love affair generation after generation. From what i have read in history NC was a much safer place to be if you were an indian…..much safer than Virginia. The ancestry of NC cannot be denied….we are all over the place….hehehehe In the mountains, in the foothills, in the piedmont, on the beaches, in the southern part of the state. The Waccamaw, The Lumbees, The Cherokee, The Haliwa-Saponi, The Nottoway, The Mattamuskeet, The Meherrin, The Tuscarora, The Occech (how do you spell that)-Saponi, The Sapponey of Person County. Did I leave anyone out? My Mom has the plate for her car that says I like calling North CArolina Home.

December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18154Linda!
I don’t know exactly what to say.
You have the direct lines so you really directly connect to the Nottoway. I would connect more indirectly, like a distant cousin at best, at least from the knowledge I have right now. I still have some brick walls in direct lines even with the mounds of information I do have to date. I really feel comfortable with an Eastern Souian descendant ID because there was so much mixing with various tribes. There are many Tuscarora Hunt families and Lumbee too and it would be my Sarah Hunt’s nephew who married Mary Jeffreys, daughter of Osborn, son of Simon unless they are different Osborn and Simons!!!??? Oh you mentioned Branch surname? I looked up Branch Tanner out of curiosity and saw this…cont.
December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18155This is really going to sound silly, but I never knew what the “register” at the bottom of rootsweb gedcom pages was. I just assumed it was to register your name , how goofy. Here I’m skipping and hopping all over the place jumping back and forth from page to page and the register lays it all out for you. This is the Tanner line and #250, Eleanor Tanner and Thomas Mcgannon are my 4th gr grandparents.

I obviously have stuff to learn yet and more people to find.

December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18158Well that explains Branch Tanner…..check out your Branches carefully Branch is seriously Nottoway
December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18159Linda,
I didn’t know until you showed me about Branch being Nottoway. Still Branch is not my direct line..not to my Eleanor Tanner.. more of a distant cousin..would be Thomas (down to Eleanor) and Lodowick brothers…well there sure are connections aren’t there? I’ll have to look further. Thanks, Sue J
December 13, 2005 at 6:56 pm #18163This is interesting….
