Hi to all. I’ve been told that we have Blackfoot on my Mayo side of the family.
Recognition first goes to my aunt Gloria Waller-Scott who first interested me in genealogy about 4 years ago. Most of the information was researched by her then passed down to me. My Mayo line is on her and my father’s side of the family.
My gg-grandfather was Samuel Mayo b. Jan 1844 in Edgecombe Co. NC in an area that was once called Flat Swamp. His parents were Richard “Ned” Mayo and Mary “Agy” Roye/Ross. I do not have any dates for his parents. Samuel joined the Union army I believe in 1863, and was in the 2nd Regiment, U.S. Colored Cavalry, Company F.
He joined the army at Fort Monroe, VA and married my gg-grandmother Elizabeth Holmes on 24 Dec 1869. “Lizzie” Holmes was a mulatto b. Feb.1844 in King & Queen, VA and d. late 1800s/1903 in Gloucester VA. Samuel Mayo ended up in Texas at the end of the Civil War in 1865/1866. Samuel Mayo came back to VA, where he died in Gloucester VA on 23 Mar 1919.
The only information I have about Samuel Mayo’s parents are their names; Richard “Ned” Mayo and Mary “Agy” Roye/Ross. The Mayo line is where I was told that our Blackfoot heritage lies. Another note: Samuel Mayo may have had a brother named Daniel Mayo, who served in the Navy around the same time that Samuel served in the Army.
In researching for my Mayo lineage, I’ve come across other Mayo families in the Edenton area of NC who have married into family surnames of Beasley, Roun(d)tree and Voyce. I don’t know whether these are my Mayo relatives or not. But they trace their Mayo back to a John Mayo who had very dark skin, straight black hair, that they called “Uncle John”. He was a half-indian who had come to Edenton from Ahoskie across the Chowan River.
I would like to assume that their Mary Voyce could be my Mary Roye/Ross, but I don’t like to jump to conclusions. I believe the time frames are too different.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18184Hi, Roni,
I’ve only found Samuel and family on the 1880 Gloucester census.
Do you have that information?
Bill
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18191Hi Bill, yes I have that information. Thank you. I just haven’t been able to find any information in the Edenton NC records for him and his parents and their information. He was a slave and information probably just wasn’t recorded. I haven’t run across any plantation records that I could match up with him.

December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18193I can tell you that the names Mayo and Scott come up often in research on VA/NC Indian families. At least one researcher, Richard Haithcock, feels they are both Saponi-related. Many of us here on this forum believe that the Blackfoot ID is a marker for Saponi ancestry. So, keep working on your research, girl, I’m sure it will go somewhere.
A lot of the research that’s been done on the Blackfoot ID is on this page: http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm. There’s also a section of the forum “The Other Blackfoot” that has many conversations on the subject, and you’ll find ongoing dialogue on the subject throughout the forum.
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18194Thanks a lot Linda. I also just wanted to mention that I have an extensive Indian heritage, that includes but is not limited to:
Mattaponi, Pamunkey, Cherokee, Chiskiake, Blackfoot, Chickahominy and Tuscarora. Surnames on my father’s side (where the Indian research has been done already) to name a few direct lines are:
Waller, Mayo, Braxton, Key, Smith, Ross/Roye, Holmes, Cooke, Young, Lee, Laws, Conway, Street, Jackson, Morris – (Squire Morris – whom I’ve already learned a little about from a recent contact who directed me to this site).
On my mother’s side we have not yet come across any Indian heritage, but surnames include:
Green, Whiting, Cook(e), Richardson, Harris, Kemp, Reade, Jones, King,
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18196Roni,
Do you have dates and locations for the following people in your lines?
Laws
Green
Cook(e)
Richardson
Harris
Jones
King

December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18207Roni,
From “Edgecombe County NC Vital Statistics Index” (database)
“Sam Mayo. b. Edgecombe Co., NC.
d. aft. 1852. Slave. Owned by Elizabeth Mayo”
“Daniel Mayo. b. Edgecombe Co., NC.
d. aft. 1852. Slave. Owned by Elizabeth Mayo”
…………………
I’m presuming that the notation “d. aft. 1852” means that is the year of the record.
I did not find an Elizabeth Mayo on the 1850 Edgecombe census but there is in 1860 Beufort Co., next door to Edgecombe, a William Mayo, 70, and presumed wife Elizabeth Mayo, 60.
Do you have access to the 1850 & 1860 Slave Schedules of those census records?
…………………
From same source as above:
“Richard Mayo Jr.. b. 1843. m’d 1866. d. 1864. Father: Richard Mayo Sr.”
The year of marriage and death conflict, so one of them may be a transcription error on the index.

December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18209Interesting information……let me answer the second post 1st, and the first post 2nd.
First, this Sam and Daniel may be the two my aunt came across, that’s why it’s a question about whether that’s our Sam and whether or not this Daniel is indeed his brother. My Sam was b. 1844 (NC) and d. 1919 (in Gloucester VA).
The two Richard Mayo’s are interesting…….Jr. was b. around same time as my Sam…..could be another brother? Jr. was also m. 3yrs before my Sam got married. The death date though IS weird. And a Richard Sr…….hummm, is “Ned” a nickname for Richard? My Richard would’ve been b. abt. 1820 or so, and m. to Mary Roye/Ross “Agy”.
I found a link yesterday on here called the Census Finder and looked at some schedules last night, but I don’t think I came across these – (half asleep). I have very limited use of Ancestry, but I believe I have access to those. It’s just hard finding “Sams” as slaves w/limited information.
Now, to the 1st post re: my surnames: (Almost all are of Gloucester and Middlesex VA)

December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #18939Ft. Monroe is in Hampton VA……
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #19023That’s a lot of info you’ve given here, Bill. Thanks for the Census years, so I can figure out the dates. Okay….where do I start with questions? Alright, here goes.
LAW(e)S: Interesting for the “e” to be inserted there. Anna LAWES was 70 yrs old, so Fanny REED must be her daughter…which may be the reason she’s living in that household. Who is the 6yo. little boy John LAWES? A grandchild?
KEY(s): Your dates for Carter A. KEYS b. abt. 1844, mine is 1844 m to Catherine LAWS b. abt. 1842, mine date is 1843. (close enough for me!). Their son (my line) James Henry KEY must be your “Jimmy” b. abt. 1868, my date is 1866. You’ve got a Betty LAWES (7yo) living with this family…….I wonder if she is Catherine’s little sister?
Thanks for the dates and info on Carter A. KEY’s 2nd marriage to Roberta ?.
SMITH: Reuben SMITH and Hannah COOKE….I didn’t see their daughter RACHEL SMITH (my line). She was b. 1839 d.1882 in K&Q VA. In the 1870 K&Q Census, she would’ve been abt. 12yo. It appears to be the correct family.
RICHARDSON:
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #19025Sorry……hit the wrong key. I wasn’t finished.:D Okay….where was I? Oh…..RICHARDSON. Now I have to redo my family group sheets! LOL. But again, I appreciate you furnishing me w/ages so I can get the dates.
RICHARDSON: Charles RICHARDSON m1. Marie JONES. I already have all the children’s names, thanks for middle initials and ages. Your “Hattie” must be my “Harriett”. My great-aunt told me that the son Ralph RICHARDSON had a deformity of the hand and foot. That’s why he’s still living with his father in the 2nd marriage, which we knew nothing about….so thanks for ALL of the 2nd marriage information.
Now I understand where this “Emma RICHARDSON” of NY came in at…..she was introduced to my granddaddy as his half-sister. We didn’t know who she was or anything…..thanks for helping to connect the dots.
JONES: Charles RICHARDSON’s 1st wife – Maria JONES was living w/the THOMAS’ (Henry and Mary)…..at the time on 1880 Census, Maria JONES was 15yo and listed as a step-daughter……..she must’ve been wife Mary THOMAS’s daughter before marriage?
COOK(e): Thank you SSSOOO much for J. Sylvester COOk’s FN!!! I could not find it ANYWHERE!!!! “Julious” (b.abt. 1881)…and wife India KING b.abt. 1884. I did have the childrens names supplied by my grand-aunt, but no b.dates….thanks for that info. Your son “Thilman” is my “Therman”……which is a family name. Your son “Willie” must be my “Bill” (both probably short for William?). You’ve got a “Cassie” as a female……..grand-aunt Ruth says “Casey” was a male (her uncle). In the 1930 Censue when “Annie” and “James” were added to the family…….”Annie” must be my “Annabelle”.
The other 3 COOK families living nearby HAVE to be related in some manner or so. I’ll look into them more. In the 1910 Glou. VA Censue, you provided 2 families living nearby. Family 62 – Albert J. COOK m. Elnora COOK, (both 64yo) and Family 63 – John C. COOK m. Mary F. COOK (52 and 50yo)………These male COOKs may be J.Sylvester COOK’s (27yo) uncles……just an assumption.
Last, but not least….Ned MAYO. I’ve never given thought that he could’ve come from VA…..I always assumed NC, because that’s where his son Samuel MAYO came from. I’ll make a note of the info, even if it’s not him……because you never know.
Again, thanks a million Bill…….
