Re: the Emily Kemp/Reade b.abt. 1849 who m’d Alexander William Green in Gloucester Co., Va, who had son Major:
The 1880 Gloucest Co census for Petsworth District, p.41 shows
GREEN, Alexander, 35, Shoemaker, Va, Va, Va.
………., EMILY, 30, wife, Va, Va, Va.
………., John H., 5, son, Va.
………., Richard, 3, son, Va.
………., William, 2, son, Va.
………., MAJOR, 9 months, b. “Aug”, son, Va.
There is no Emily Reade/Reed etc., listed in 1870 Gloucester.
The possibility exists, of course, that Emily is a middle name and she was recorded under a different first name. However, there is an Emily Kemp:
1870 Gloucester Co census, Petsworth, p.15, family # 121:
KEMP, Minny, 68, female, Va.
…….., EMILY, 20, female, Va.
In 1870, Alex Green was living with parents Henry and Elizabeth Green, family # 50.
December 19, 2005 at 4:23 am #19097Yes, Emily (Kemp/Reade) Green has been a question to me for a while. The Death Records I found before has her as:
GREEN, Emily, cf; DOD: Dec 10, 1885; 35yo; housekeeper; dau. of Henry & Betsey READE; m. to Alexander H.(W) GREEN.
Also, Emily and Alexander’s son “William”……my records have him as Alexander “W” Green, Jr……probably called by his middle name to differentiate from father. He died at 4yo. from brain fever.
My grandaunt Geneva (Major’s dau.) also said Emily’s parents were Henry and Betsey Reade.
But the Census Records (yr?) say that Emily’s parents were Oswald and Mima/Minnie Kemp……and at the time “living with her mother Minnie Kemp”.
So I’m wondering if the Kemps were her real parents who died, and then she went to live with the Reades. OR maybe these are two different Emilys born abt. 1850 living in Gloucester Co. VA. Everyone seems to remember the READES as Emily’s parents.
Thanx!

I haven’t found any Reade/Read/Reed in Gloucester, K & Q or anywhere in the surrounding area with an Emily/Emma or Henry, etc., in 1870 or 1860 census.
