Hi,
I haven’t been on for awhile, as I was only hitting deadends but came across a possibility.
My gg-grandmother was Josephine Barbee, who married Walton Edwin Moore. She’s been hard to trace but I came across a Josephine Barbee on this census. Don’t know if she’s the same one but they both come from Texas and are around the same age. (My gg-grandma claimed to have been born around 1866 and this one is supposed to have been 1857 but I’ve noticed quite a few of my female relatives to take years off their unofficial — and sometimes even official — age.) I have an old, very blurry photo of her which doesn’t tell me much except that she is on the dark side with black hair.
In any case, can anyone tell me what the notations mean? Some, such as birthdate and marital status are self-explanatory but what does REL mean? Religion? Relationship? HD is her REL.
And it says she is white, so why would she be on this list? Just happened to be living in the territory?
Thank you so much for any help. The farther back I get in my family lines, the more rumors of native-american ancestry I find (especially either Eastern Cherokee or Blackfoot) but still nothing definite.
December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18279Welcome back, Hana,
The U.S. govt purchased “unassigned lands” in I.T. in 1889, and sold that to some settlers, so there were non-Native people (other than outlaws) in what later became Oklahoma, with some parts of Oklahoma Territory being designated with ‘county’ names as early as 1890.
However, your inquiry is a bit confusing. Garvin County wasn’t created until 1907. The area that became Garvin would have been encompassed in one of the ‘Reservation’ areas.
If you would list everything on the top portion of that page you referenced that is above the list of inhabitants, we’ll take a look at it and attempt to answer your questions.

December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18287Okay,
Josephine Barbee is listed as “Widowed” on the 1900 Okla census so Barbee would not have been her maiden name.
Do you know where your Josephine Barbee came from in Texas?
What were the names of some of her children?

December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18289Oops. (What was I thinking?)
Well she’s not my best Native-American connection possibility but she is still a mystery, so here’s all I know: she gave birth to my g-grandfather on June 11, 1893 in Kyle, Texas, and claimed to be born about 1866. Had 8 or 9 kids, 6 still living at the time of either my g-grandfather’s birth or the time of the reissued birth cert. I don’t have his sisters names but my mother does I think.
(My best NA possibility at this point I got stuck on because he had to go and be named Jones. William Jones. The one bit of useful info I have is that he died “about January 1838” in Lincoln Co TN, according to a court document. I know his children’s names. His wife was Mary (Polly). I have the court document # and such. Just didn’t know what to do next with this. Their daughter married Nathan Meeks, whom I know about from Nathan on.)
Not a sure thing but with numerous family tales and rumors on that side (well before it was the ‘in’ thing, and was said behind one’s back) and a photo of the daughter, Sarah, who married Nathan, who is even my little daughter volunteer looks Native-American (her mother Mary, definitely doesn’t), these seemed like my warmest lead. Until I got stuck at ‘Jones.’

December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18294So what is your G-Grandfather’s name?
I’ll need that to confirm the accuracy of what I’ve found which was also in Kyle, Hays Co., Tx.

Someone told me this a while back on this website (possibly you!) which is another of the reasons this connection looks one of my most likely lines.
There were some family researchers who got the line back to Nathan Meeks who married Sarah C. Jones (William and Mary Jones’ daughter ) around 1822. Some of the needed records were reportedly burned, so no one could prove (after 26+ years of trying) that Nacy Meeks is Nathan Meeks father, though they appear next door in the 1830 census. They think our Meeks’ are the ones in Pendleton Co., SC in the 1790’s, who later moved to Franklin Co, GA by 1805 and were in Bedford Co. TN by 1820. By 1840, they are in Tippah Co. MS. Nathan and Sarah are believed to have been married in Lincoln Co. TN where her parents were from, or at least lived. (He died there, too. Don’t know about her.)
SarahC. Jones Meeks had a sister name Eliza who married a Sterling Y. Keith. Other children of Mary and William Jones were: John W. Allen B. and Polly S. who married Hiram Job, Stephen and William. William may also have had a son names Isham Holmes if I understand a court case correctly.
They were a highly mobile bunch. Some of the children went to Illinois, and my lot went to Texas.
Other Meeks on the Tippah Co rolls with Nathan are: Littleton, Martin, John and James.
My interest in this line started with Sarah and Nathan Meeks’ daughter Mary Ann, who married Thomas Jefferson Hughes of Cross Keys, SC.
TJ Hughes descendants (and siblings descendants, as it turns out!) are the ones who passed on the Native-American ancestry stories, with a few interesting anecdotes that made it fairly believable.
Richard Emery Hughes, TJ Hughes’ father, and Jency or Jane Brandon his mother, is as far back as I get on that line.
An NDN researcher with some familiarity with the Hughes of SC, said that there were basically 3 unrelated strands that were in Union Co around the same time. One was upscale and refined — not likely my Hugheses.;) The other two distinguished themselves by being in one case French-related, and in the other, were referred to as ‘half-breeds.’ Some of TJ’s siblings went to Buncombe, NC, where they married Presslys, Redmond/Redmans (seen several spellings), and a Lominack. That line also had Native-American rumors far back. (Didn’t ask if they were also related to Elvis.)
(My Hugheses also married into a family, the Wimberleys, who had their own fairly specific Blackfoot ancestor story. They are from the Apex area of Wake Co, NC, with a mystery forefather that has had family genealogy nuts digging for decades with no luck.)
Quite distant cousins I’d never met, on the same lines, got the same or related stories. Which is why I keep looking.

So what is your G-Grandfather’s name?
His birth cert says James Lewis Moore but in both spots the middle name was clearly erased and Lewis written in. Could have just been a mistake, but I always thought his middle name was supposed to be something else, like Lester. Definitely L though.
(He made us, his great-grandkids, call him ‘Uncle Jim,’ the old coot. Refused to let us call him Granddad or any variation. Wonder what that was all about?)

On this census, Walton’s father is listed as b. Va., his mother b. Ala. and Jodie (Josephine)’s father and mother are listed as born Tex but this is incorrect. Her father was born Tenn (possibly NC) and mother in Arkansas.
On 1910 Census, Walton and Josephine/Jodie are nowhere to be found and Annie is the head of household with the above siblings plus Emma E., b.abt. 1901, living with her.
Josephine’s parents are James Gaston Barbee, b. 13 Nov 1832 Tenn; d. 4 July 1894 Hays Co., Tex; and Sarah “Sally” E. Nance, b. 1 Sep 1840 Hempstead Co., Ark; d. 15 Apr 1923 Texas.
I’ll post the rest tomorrow.

December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18325Quick, too!
Wow, my first mystery woman is solved. And she did lie about her age, but only by a couple of years. Lots of ‘so that’s why’ info in that one for me.
Btw, some of the info I get, is of interest to other eager family researchers I’ve met online, so I thank you for them, too!
I am curious as to why do you think the father may have been from NC, not TN? (All my family lines seem to go back to NC eventually. But especially the ones with any NA rumors. This line didn’t have those — I was just digging.)
I hate to ask for more when you just helped so much with this one, but if you have any idea of directions I could try next with my ‘most likely’ NA lines, that would be wonderful.

December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18350Wow, I’ve been taking this and running with it! There is lots of info on these lines now that I’ve got some names and numbers to work with.
Thank you again!
December 26, 2005 at 5:57 am #18383Hana,
Just interesting to note that the Nance name married into the Allen line too, and wonder if these Nances go back to earlier Piedmont. There is a Judith Nance born in Mecklenburg co Va married to Darling Allen and a Mary Nance married to Gray Allen with son Wyatt Nance Allen both Nance/Allen’s migrating to Anson co NC. There is an Old Nance cemetery in Anson..
This is from a marriage of William Allen to Mary Lewis..this William, son of Robert II had numerous wives and fathered at least 20 children. Have no idea who all they married. Sue J
