These are all heads of households listed as Inhabitants of Free Town. Note
that some of these names are also well known and documentated names from the
Occaneechi Tribe. I have marked these names with an *.
The name of Mathews is a prominant name in the “Portuguese Communities” of
Greensville and Northampton Counties.
Poythress is another common name associated w/ the Free Persons of Color or
Portuguese Communites. As well as Turners, Bass, Scotts, Peters and a few
Jarrells. Obviously, these small communities were at one time one large
settlement that eventually split into quite a number of smaller towns. All of
the names listed on this posting are found on both sides of the state line
between NC and VA. Mostly in Brunswick, Greensville and Mecklenburg Counties
VA and Northampton County, NC. Some can be found as far south as Wilson
County NC and Sumter County SC to eventually spread throughout the Southeast
and Mid-west.
Again Barry, I will document all the small settlements and their inhabitants
for Brunswick as well as Greensville counties with prominant surnames that we
know of to possibly show dispersal of the communities.

For example the following names are from neigbhoring Mecklenburg co and I am highly confident that there is native American ancestry in these families based upon facial features, other connections and/or culture:

I have a ggg Grandfarther Godrey Shelton from Mecklenburg Co (I think) around 1830. This may connect with your shelton. I’ll have to do some digging on the other info. Crystal does any of this ring a bell with you.

Have you read the book written by Jack Goins. I recieved my personal copy about a year ago. He has done a lot of research in the area of Granville Co. where the 1750&55 tax list gave the names of several mullato living along the Flatt River.

Now if I remember it correctly Moses Riddle married the daughter of old Thomas Collins. I will look this up to make sure I am stating this correctly and if I am wrong I will make the correction. The book is still in print and can be ordered through Jack at

This is interesting as my wife’s families are all listed….Mathews,Jarrell,Turner,Bass,Scott and Poythress. She has many ‘dark’ individuals in her family and all are from Greensville Co., Va and according to the census records they are from the Portughese community. I have traced her mother’s Jarrells to a Vincent Jarrell b c 1795 and a Prura(Plura) Goins(Going)b c 1805 all living in the Littleton District of Halifax Co, NC.
She and her family were all listed as mulatto but all the surrounding families including the Jarrells were listed as white.
Would love to learn more about Plura’s and Vincent’s families and their relationship to the Saponis if any. Also would like to understand better the difference between the Haliwa-Saponi and the Occaneechi-Saponi.
All of the Indians living in Piedmont VA and NC are likely of Saponi or mixed Saponi orgins including the Occaneechi and . We are all cousins!

The one name that iam very surprized to see listed is Darden, this is a very classic lower MS river valley name with almost exclusive Indian connexions.
I know that many of the eastern seaboard tribes, when dienfranchised by VA/NC moved enmasse to La/ Tx and are still there.
Iam sure we’ll eventually be hearing from them.
Jackson, Cooper and probably Young — and they do seem to originate in VA/NC
But where I really seem to find the most family surnames, (Hughes, Moore, Jackson, and others) the ones on our direct line and that show up multiple times, is on the lists of Indian Traders. Guess that’s our family connection. Don’t know what to do with that info, though.
