Copied from Register of Free Negros 1803-1850, Brunswick County, VA
These are all heads of households listed as Inhabitants of Free Town. Note
that some of these names are also well known and documentated names from the
Occaneechi Tribe. I have marked these names with an *.
The name of Mathews is a prominant name in the “Portuguese Communities” of
Greensville and Northampton Counties.
Poythress is another common name associated w/ the Free Persons of Color or
Portuguese Communites. As well as Turners, Bass, Scotts, Peters and a few
Jarrells. Obviously, these small communities were at one time one large
settlement that eventually split into quite a number of smaller towns. All of
the names listed on this posting are found on both sides of the state line
between NC and VA. Mostly in Brunswick, Greensville and Mecklenburg Counties
VA and Northampton County, NC. Some can be found as far south as Wilson
County NC and Sumter County SC to eventually spread throughout the Southeast
and Mid-west.
Again Barry, I will document all the small settlements and their inhabitants
for Brunswick as well as Greensville counties with prominant surnames that we
know of to possibly show dispersal of the communities.

Hi everyone!
At last back on line and in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Took a day off from making pottery to do a bit more research and say Happy New Year!
Think this time i have found something of interest.
Just found the parents of James Allison Love, (Reid Gold Mine). And his mother is none other than Betty Crook. (records show Elizabeth also). Also found a Crooks web site with birth records etc… the family talks about a g g grandmother that put “whiting” on her face to cover her dark skin! They claim being part Native American.
My linage is direct:
James Allison Love/Mary Elizabeth Ingram
Nancy Love/Eli Howell
Narcissus Emeline Howell/Alfred(Alford) Joseph Carr
Georgia Ann Savannah /Carr/Sprayberry
Elizabeth Tipton/Alford Sprayberry
Ada Sprayberry (my grandmother)
James Allison Loves father was James Love (B. 1720) with land sales in common with James Crook and sometimes Elizabeth. (Brunswick – book 7 Page 260 on 2-27-1762).
Anyway just thought i would share the fun an maybe others have similar interest.
Bill I am sure you will ask for dates and places but things are not unpacked yet but can get them for everyone soon. The big snow has given me a break!.

PS: tried to shorten the quote but need more direction. For the moderator please feel free to edit for me. thanks

I have a Merritt DNA cousin whose Merritt’s came from Wetzel Co WV through present day Moundsville WV circa 1820. They followed the Ohio River to Fayetteville PA and then Ohio. Talked a bit about it in this thread: Greetings Cousins
Who are the Merritt ancestors you are looking at?
April 24, 2001 at 8:09 pm #37040Sorry, I made a mistake. Its not Merritt I found on my line but Merrick (similar soundex). I think I was mixing two of my surnames (Everett and Merrick) when I read the name. May be a possibility they have the same origin? According to trees, the Merrick on my lines starts with a John born 1640 England and dies in Somerset MD. There’s many new surnames to me on the lines that eventually married my Atmore from VA, as well as controversy with a Barron surname. My apologies for the confusion. It would be great to tie in on another line…
My John Porter is in a recent post. Also, my Ward is on the Harrell line. Still an interest in this thread for them.
