A wonderful lady named Susan, sent me this forum thinking I might could find some answers.
I have a very hard brick wall in Jefferson/Grainger Co Tenn that I can’t seem to climb over or break through.
My Grandfather was Simon Luke Moore and he was born in 1893 in the Knoxville, TN area.
His father was Simon Lafayette “Fate” Moore who was born in 1846 and married Elizabeth Brabson in Jefferson Co in 1873.
The family moved to Texas in 1895 and “Fate” left a brother and sister in TN. Their names were Joseph and Ellen (who married a Wright).
According to Fate’s Death Certificate his father’s name was Bill and his mother’s name was Lou Patterson and they were both born in Virginia.
There are sooooooooooo many William Moore’s in the eastern TN area and I can’t tie any of them to a Lou Patterson or to anything else.
We always knew there was native american blood in both Fate and Elizabeth’s family. Elizabeth’s has been proven (more or less, Cherokee) but Fate’s has always been a mystery.
My uncle claims his grandfather, Fate told him he was Blackfoot. I thought, for years that this must be a mistake because of the region he came from and that he must have meant Black Dutch and got it confused.
I was surprised to read Susan’s email about the Eastern Blackfeet which appears to be the same thing……….either way, I’m here and really hoping someone can help me solve the mystery of William Moore (it might be easier if it was John Smith)………..
So what I’m really asking is, does anyone have a Bill & Lou Moore, Joseph Moore who married Rachel Tucker in 1881 or an Ellen Moore Wright who married a Newton Wright.
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20466Well I can’t help with your Moore’s but some of my Moore’s did go into TN. My direct line stayed in NC they came from Nansemond County VA. I believe a Richard Moore from my line left VA and went west into the Granville area of NC then on to TN. Alot of our family moved west and south but we stayed. There was a Edward, Richard and Joseph Moore in Nansemond County this is our line. I descend from Joseph and he was given a large land grant in NC around the 1739-1741 timeframe. Several marriages within my Moore line trace back to the Nottoway People. I believe Richard Moore’s line married into Saponi(Blackfoot) in the Granville area of NC this may be some of your people. Welcome to Saponitown several here will help if possible but Moore’s are a tough lot 😀

April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20467LOL…….I agree that the Moore’s are a tough lot…………like I siad, I think it would be easier to find a John Smith, than a William Moore…………..LOL
Thanks and I’ll keep watching.
This is a great forum…………..I’m really enjoying it.
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20469LindaQ …… you may have picked up some info on my Richard Moore who was born, raised and died in Granville/Person co, NC.
He was son of Abraham, son of William Moore and Susannah Martin. Some of the Person co Moores did migrate to Tn and Ky but Richard kept the homeplace.
Belle….. welcome to Saponitown and good luck sorting out the Moores…. we need all the help we can get. 😉 I think the only surnames with more brickwalls is JONES and DAY …… and I have multiple lines of all 3 surnames……. the only thing I can say with any certainty is that they were all living with and migrating with others surnames that appear to be mixed bloods.
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20471DreamingHawk,
Our Moores are probably the same family since I know some of ours did go into the Granville area. My Joseph had two tracks of land one closer to were Bertie County is today and another in what is Edgecombe County today. He gave the Edgecombe track to his son James in his will and I descend from James. Joseph was maried to Ann Branch Hodges. James married Ann Ruffin. Then Elijah married Mary Sessums….Theophilus and Millie Robbins..Joab and Martha Price(supposingly Quaker) John W. Moore and Mary Susan Etheridge. Mary Sessums goes back to Richard Smith (Ft. Christanna Richard Smith’s father) Indian trader.
The children of Elizabeth Smith were called to court in 1742 to prove their race in Bertie County. Elizabeth Smith married Thomas Sessums who I know for a fact was white because both his parents were born in England so Elizabeth was the one in real question I am sure. Her children married Sizemores and Wynnes and she married a Boon after Thomas passed on. Some of her children married Van Pelt too. I descend from one of the Wynne marriages and the Wynnes in our area claim native descent and I have traced some back and they connect to this same branch of Wynnes who married into the Sessums. The Sessums of Edgecombe County also claim native descent just as the Moores do and we go back to the same folks. Nicholas Smith also headed your way have you run into him yet in your research? The Sizemores seem to have disappeared from our area as I have never known of any. I know one settled on Conentea Creek in the 1750’s but it looks like that is Greene County today so they may still be down that way. The Van Pelts were whalers from Long Island and dutch. They had many dealings with the ndns in New York one of them was a commissioner of some sort. It is said that ndns from Nantuckat Island came to North Carolina on whaling ships perhaps with the Van Pelts…who knows but the fact they were whalers and the ndn came on whaling ships seems interesting to me. I looked all these families up even if I didn’t connect directly due to all the ndn stories and they all connect to some sort of story about ndns so you know were their is smoke there is fire. The Sizemores have come up with Q DNA which is Native American meaning it was a male native who started this line of Sizemores. And we all know the stories of the Boon/Boone. I am sure it is the Smith who started all these stories especially in the Sessums and this one Wynne line. Some of my Ruffins appear to have married ndn too in Northampton County and they also married into this same line of Smiths, along with the Waltons and Norfleets. I grew up in Edgecombe County with all of these families telling their stories and me telling ours to not realizing just how interconnected we all really were. Oh we can drop the Grays into this bunch to cause they were marrying into us like crazy too, along with the Amason, Barnes, Woodard, Bass and Rogers and Farmer and the Baileys…and lets not forget the Webbs…ok now that I have bored I will stop LOL

Are you connected to Anna Jones who married Neverson Stewart in Orange County or Robert Stewart who married Polly Jones, Greenesville bond, with Neverson as security?
I am also wondering if you know about (or are connected to) the Bass families that lived next door to Ruffin Stewart (my ggggrandfather) in 1840, Person County census?

Hey Dreaminghawk, that’s not very encouraging. 🙂 But, I know what you mean. They are some of my brickwalls, too. My 2nd Great Grand-Uncle, John JONES, married Susan Caroline DAY. John’s parents are Harvey JONES and Martha ROSSER. Susan’s parents are Dudley DAY and Mary Ann JEFFRIES. These families are part of the group that left Virginia for Greene County, Ohio in the late 1830’s, but that is as far back as I can trace these families.

April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20766Txbelle,
Prior to the 1900 Fannin Co., Tx records, only a couple of close correlaries were found in earlier Tenn.
There was a William Moore who m’d an Ellen Patterson on 6 June 1852 in Claiborne Co., Tenn, and according to the 1870 Jefferson Co., Tenn census, they had children named Lafayatt, Sarah M., Joseph, Eda M., John and Mary E., but their ages are all off by about 10 yrs from what you have for your Moores.
If Eliza Brabson’s father was John Brabson, his 2nd wife was Sarah J. (Patterson) Haynes. John and 1st wife Martha’s son Eli Wilson Brabson m’d a Sarah M. Moore, Simon Lafayette’s sister was also a Sarah M. ?? This could also be the Sarah M. Moore, dau of William and Ellen Moore, noted above.

April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20953Bill, my cousin sent me this link :

I am interested in these Elliotts or Elliott children of Old Joseph. How can we find out more about them ? We have an Elliott line but have not been able to trace them . We know William Albert Elliott ‘s wife was Native American or half but know little about him. His father was James H. Elliott but we don’t know his mother.
On the third page there is a listing of Goen’s. Could that be a varient of Goin’s? Just a thought. Ed
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #20956Ed, would you start a new thread for your Elliotts. Some date range info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Bill
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #21119Bill…….I’ve been out of town and sorry I haven’t gotten back quicker………….I’ve seen that census on William and Ellen Patterson also, and the children do match the family I’m looking for. I feel like thay are connected somehow but………….like you said the dates are all off.
I know for a fact that Simon Lafayette “Fate” was born in 1846 (or at least that is what his death certificate says) so………….this William who married Ellen Patterson just might be an older brother. And Ellen might be a sister to Lou Patterson.
As yes, Elizabeth Aline Brabson is the daughter of John Brabson/Brabston (the marriage license says Brabston)…………and Martha Ione Smith. Martha Smith was full blood Cherokee. She and her sister Sarah (who married Wilson Vinson Brabson) were indentured and adopted by Capt John Smith. Family tradition has it that she was born during the 1st Indian Removal in Virginia. She was married to John Brabston and pregnant with her first child during the 2nd Indian Removal (Trail of Tears). Family tradition is that some cousins in Arkansas hid her during the Removal to keep her from being taken.
We do think that Sarah Moore who married Eli Wilson Brabson was “Fate’s” sister since he signed the marriage bond.
But their father and mother is still a mystery…………..the death certificate for Fate simply says Bill Moore born in TN and Lou Patterson born in TN………….but somewhere is a census that says they were born in VA. (but I can’t get my hands on it right now)
Now for the interesting (or at least new and interesting) part of your message………………you say John Brabson’s 2nd wife was Sarah J Patterson Haynes………………..hmmmmmmmmmmm the information we have found is that her name was Sarah “Janie” Patten…………….so…………..if it truly was patterson, that kinda sheds a different light on the subject.
I just gotta find these Pattersons.
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #21120Oh……….I also frogot to mention……………Fate Moore was 6’8″ tall and a Primitive Baptist Preacher.
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #21133Txbelle,
Sorry, educate me. What are you referring to as the first removal from Virginia?
Bill
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #21135Sorry Bill, but I’m not real educated on the finer points of this history but here’s what I found………………

My “terminology” was based on family oral history………….
April 22, 2006 at 9:14 pm #21158I’m not real comfortable with the kind of ‘coincidences’ we noted a couple of posts ago, especially when it hinges on census ages.
They are the only Moores there AND they have most of the names in there. I will not say that “these” are “yours”, but I do raise the caution that they may very well be yours and the census data is ‘way off’, not the people and location.
I’d tell you a story about Death Certificate “Informants” who should have known who their grandparents were – and mine did – but my G-Grandfather got it wrong about his father’s parents anyway – per the certificate he filled out AND my grandmother who knew ALL OF ‘EM, and who had nothing good to say about his “composure” on that day, although she did “understand” how that could happen, she adamantely did NOT “accept” the fact that he switched the indentities “Of His Own GrandMothers!”. Man! We all heard about that For-Her-Ever-After. 🙂
I wouldn’t expect anyone to accept this as supporting ‘proof’ of my supposition at this level of circumstance, but txbell should be considering it for further research.
It’s too bad that we don’t have additional data to support either side of this conjecture – then there wouldn’t be one 🙂 , but these coincidences are ‘verging on probable.
Bill
